Effectively implementing Green

Living into your classroom.

Natasha Sauve

Standard 1
As an educator I act in the best interest of my students. Bringing a green way of living
into my classroom does this by teaching my students how to care for our environment
and better the world they are going to be in for years to come.

Standard 2
I would like to bring a green way of life not only into my classroom, but into my students
homes and the community. I believe getting families involved would enrich this
experience.

Standard 9
Indiginous history very much aligns with a Green way of living in many ways. I would like
to relate the two and use this as a way of teaching children more about Indiginous way
of life and history.

Overview
My Research is based on successfully turning Classrooms green. Rethinking basic
supplies, challenges, water collection, and so much more. Climate change is
happening, and it is so important that we teach our students about how it is
effecting the world. I chose this topic because of the importance of the subject,
and wanting my passion for sustainability to transfer to future generations. This
research is based on both bringing sustainability into the classroom, and teaching
our students how to bring this way of living home. I believe my research was very
successful, using the amazing resources listed below that I would recommend to
all fellow colleagues. In the upcoming pages of the presentation I explained the
connections to BC's curriculum giving examples of ways to bring sustainability into
the classroom using the subjects required in the curriculum. I also described the
sustainability projects that my School already has in place aswell as how I
implemented these ways into my own practicum.
BC Curriculum
This Inquiry has many opportunities to connect to the BC curriculum. Subject areas
that align with having a green classroom are; Physical and Health Education as we
are supporting a healthy lifestyle, Social Studies as we are connecting to the land,
and Science. Although these are the subject areas that I would mainly focus on,
implementing a green classroom could be brought in through any subject area by
creating cross curricular lesson plans. Implementing a green classroom aligns with
the communication, thinking, personal and social core competencies. When
implementing a green school and classroom it is crucial that students and teachers
work together using clear communication and collaboration. Students will
demonstrate Critical and reflective thinking throughout switching over to a greener
lifestyle through trial and error. Last but not least, creating a green classroom and
lifestyle allows students to demonstrate both personal and social awareness and
responsibility. Students make choices thinking about both themselves and the
community surrounding them.

Practicum Implementation
Me and Lyric from Cohort 1 are going to start our own sustainability project during
our practicum days, with the guidance of fellow teachers in the school. We will be
creating a club with our cohort classes for some lunch time hours. We are going to
be making beeswax lunch wraps and selling them to raise money for the school-as
well as Promote sustainability!!! We are going to begin by making them with our
classes as an art project that they can bring home and use; and then gather a group
who wants to continue into making this a club and raising money for the
school. There were also many other things going on throughout my classroom as well
as the school including counting the amount of packaged and processed foods that
were packed in there lunches, reusable art projects, and spending as much time as
possible outside no matter the weather.I will also be creating a walking field trip to a
farm to teach more about sustainability.
