Pumps used as turbines

Zweckverband Landes- wasserversorgung, Stuttgart, Germany

The well-established Regional Water Association “Zweckverband Landes- wasserversorgung (LW)” is one of the largest remote water supply companies in Germany providing a reliable source of water to 250 cities and municipalities in Baden-Württem- berg and Bavaria – e.g. Aalen, Ellwangen, Esslingen, Göppingen, Ludwigsburg, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Stuttgart and Ulm – with around 99 million cubic metres of drinking water per year. The Breech electricity recovery system is located in the municipality of Börtlingen in the ad- ministrative district of Göppingen.

Clever ideas for gaining energy

Several electricity recovery systems have been installed to control the pipeline pressure between the Osterbuch and Schönbühl tanks, one of which being the electricity recovery installation in Breech. Eight pumps are employed here to not only reduce the pipeline pressure but also to generate electricity as they are simultaneously used as turbines for energy recovery. The pumps used are standard products which run in reverse and are operated in parallel (they cut in or stop operating in accordance with the flow rate). The expected energy yield is 300 kW with the system run at best efficiency point, and the electricity gained is fed into the grid of the local energy provider by the Regional Waster Association. In this way, the system pays for itself after approximately three years.

Decisive for choosing KSB were the benefits offered by centri-

fugal pumps running in reverse as well as the special support

and guidance provided by the KSB sales branch. Compared

with conventional hydraulic turbines, the advantages of KSB

centrifugal pumps running in reverse are considerable. While

a turbine has to be specially designed to meet the customer’s

requirements, the Etanorm chosen for this application is a

proven, time-tested pumping solution. Alongside low invest-

ment costs, the pump is available much faster and is therefore

immediately ready for use. The comprehensive know-how of

our experts also ensures that operating reliability is increased

and downtime kept low.
