difference between ‘Performance Appraisal’ and ‘Performance Management’ (not the
definitions, but the conceptual difference, in your own words) and then also briefly explain why,
‘subjectivity’ plays a negative role, during any performance management process?

Understanding the Conceptual difference
Between Performance Management and
performance Appraisal

In Performance Appraisal we make an evaluation, assessment and review about the outcomes
that had been generated by the employees and workforce in the organization, based on their
individual performance, it is an operational task that is performed once a year in a systematic
way .It is usually a part of performance management performed at departmental level

Whereas,

In Performance Management there is phase to phase planning for employees by identifying and
setting their standards and objectives and link them with organizational goals to enhance and
utilize their skills and abilities in more efficient way, managers and supervisors are entitled to
perform this task ,it is a continuous ongoing process that is based upon phase to phase
performance review (From the start of accounting year till the end ) ,performance management
process enables managers to take right decision at the right time .

Negative role of subjectivity during


performance management process
The subjectivity that deals with the influence of personnel opinion have some negative influence
on performance management, following factors are described below through which there is
negative influence on performance management ,

1) Negative perception (Usually depends upon employee’s attitude)

2) Cultural discrimination and workforce diversity (gender, cast, language discrimination)

3) Biased behavior from manager (Selective hiring)

4) Managers are not properly trained

5) Managers are either too linnet too strict

6) Managers are chicken (Not so brave enough to defend their employees)

7) They are incompetent to make effective decisions.
