Shaving doesnʼt have to be an annoyance that men have to deal with from day to day. Forget the razor in the morning and
sport a five oʼclock shadow in time to go out with friends. Sleep for another night or two and awake with that scrappy look,
or wait five to six nights and flaunt the shaggy look.
According www.en.wikipedia.org, male pogonotrophy -- the process of growing facial hair -- is associated with wisdom. No
wonder so many men at CU grow out their whiskers.
Here are the yays, nays and ways of facial hairstyles.
Many barber shops around Boulder assist in making
growing accessories unique for CU men. Debra Burke, a
barber stylist from Burkeʼs West Hair Company located at
2400 Broadway St., said the styles start with the rock stars
and the actors in Hollywood. Burke said men these days
wear the five oʼclock shadow or the goatee.
“Skinny sideburns going in to the jaw line up to the
mustache (is common). Itʼs a lot of work to keep up. Itʼs
men expressing themselves,” Burke said.

facial hair.

Barber Shop located at 1087 13th St,
said that shaves and goatees are in
style.
“Very thin beards are very in
for the college students,” Bollinger
said. “The goatee is very popular,
too. (Also,) the Elvis sideburns are very
popular. They are coming back.”
These styles may be put together in various
arrangements to provide an inimitable look.
“(I call my facial hair a) beard-goatee combo,”
Joseph Manning, a junior English major said, showing
off his face mostly covered with sideburns that connect
with a goatee.
These looks are inspired by many different role
models in the lives of the men who sport the looks. Manning
said that he is inspired by his fatherʼs facial hair. The most
popular group of people to trail is celebrities. Their familiar
faces give CU students ideas and inspirations.
“Elvis,” said Robert Lew, a senior history major, sport-
ing a goatee and the renowned sideburns.
Facial hair can be used to distinguish many different
looks, and the tools used to detail these looks vary.
“Itʼs a combination of tools. Thereʼs a beard trimming
tool (that I use), thereʼs also a three-head Norelco trim-
mer and a razor with motors to get the corners,” said Phil
Johnson, a senior architecture major. “Iʼm guessing that I get
at least $100 worth of facial hair tools every Christmas.”
Although these tools are sought after to help maintain
the male whiskers, food still seems to get caught in thick
hair like a fly stuck in a web. Students said that foods such
as Ramen Noodles, ranch dressing and beverages get caught
in facial hair most commonly.

“Itʼs really irritating when you go to the mirror and you
see some chunk of food (in your beard) and nobody has told
you,” Johnson said. “I imagine this happens everyday.”

blending in. I donʼt just like being out there,” Manning said.
Men begin to detail their facial hair at different times in
their lives. This is because the hair in any given spot on the
face grows differently for each man.
