Pregnancy with EDD 1/8/21
5 living children
All 5 children had therapeutic labour induction due to reduced intrauterine movements.
All 5 went on to be delivered vaginally with no other medical intervention.

Health in pregnancy will be the primary prevention of adult disease!
The best way to have a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby, is to maintain a healthy
environment for the two of you. A susceptibility to adult chronic disease has its
foundation in fetal development. Epigenetic expression whilst the baby is growing inside
of you, is very sensitive to environmental changes. This can lead to baby having altered
function, production of hormones and metabolism. The environmental exposure whilst
your baby is in utero, in your tummy, alter phenotypic expression via DNA methylation,
histone acetylation, messenger RNA expression and chromatin structure modification.
Epigenetic changes that happen whilst baby is in you, are replicated throughout life and
can be passed down to subsequent generations.

Many pregnancies are unplanned. This is a valid reason to always be mindful of a healthy
diet and lifestyle, not just for yourself but for your future babies.

Preconception work
For a planned pregnancy should involve a good diet and detoxification programme,
restoring all vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Pregnancy weight gain
A normal pregnancy should have a weight gain of 3-4 pounds during the first trimester,
with a total weight gain of 25-35 pounds.
A low weight gain is associated with poor growth intrauterine and an increased risk of
perinatal mortality (baby may die).
Weight gain is from two components;
1) all products of conception – baby, amniotic fluid that surrounds baby and the
placenta
2) maternal accretion (gradual growth of tissues which is the expansion of blood and
extracellular fluid, enlarged uterus and mammaries and laying down fat stores.
Obesity
High maternal weight or high weight gain during pregnancy leads to pregnancy induced
diabetes. High blood pressure and obesity has a significant increase in stillbirth or death
within one month of birth.
Thyroid
High and low thyroid function can lead to many complications in pregnancy and preterm
delivery. Autoimmunity/antibodies also increases the risk of losing the pregnancy.
** TSH laboratory values range from 0.45 t0 4.5 million international units (mIU/L) per
litre. The upper range cutoff in pregnancy TSH should be around 2.5 mIU/L. Miscarriage
and preterm delivery increase with higher levels.
Women with positive antibody tests and no thyroid hormone replacement have higher risk
of miscarriage.
Women with unexplained history of previous pregnancy losses should be treated if TSH
level is higher than 2.5mIU/L and/or they positive antibody test.

Iodine Consumption
Iodine is displaced from the thyroid gland by fluoride, chlorine and bromine. These are
found in the water supply to our homes, personal care products, including toothpaste,
some medications and fire retardants. Iodine consumption is foods has also dramatically
decreased over the last 30 years. Blood iodine levels below 50mc/L are associated with
poorer infant outcomes.

Flu and other vaccinations in pregnancy
A controversial topic. I personally will not advocate any vaccine that is on the market. No
vaccine has ever been proven safe and no vaccine ever proven effect.

Hydration
There is 40% more circulating volume in the pregnant woman. There are 32 ounces of
fluid surrounding the baby as amniotic fluid, replaced every third hour.
96 ounces of fluid is lost via urination and perspiration per day. Pregnancy requires a
minimum of 8-12 eight ounce glasses of fluid per day. Avoid tea, coffee, sugary and
alcoholic drinks.
** insufficient fluid intake can lead to constipation, pre term labour, temperature
dysregulation, cystitis, miscarriage and fatigue. Proper hydration is required for good
breast milk production and flow. Drink regularly. Do not wait to be thirsty.

Undernourished and malnourished and overeating
This leads to many risks, abnormalities and disease in both mother and baby.

Folic Acid containing foods
Deficiency of folic acid during the prenatal period is linked to spine bifida and neural tube
defects.
Eating higher amounts pre conception is advised.
Sources; spinach, lentils, chickpeas, asparagus, broccoli, peas, Brussels sprouts, corn and
oranges.

Apples
Apples have a protective effect on children with a 40% decreased rate of wheeze and 50%
lowered risk of asthma at age 5.
Apples also contain flavonoids, isoflavonoids and phenolic acids.

**Strict vegan diets must be managed as they may result in low B12 and anaemia**

Choline
Rapid cell division in pregnancy, expansion of maternal kidneys and uterus, growth of
placental and fetal tissue and increased lipoprotein required for the nervous system
development all deplete choline stores. Higher Choline levels protect against neural tube
birth defects. Choline is not found in most supplements and 450mg daily is required in
pregnancy. Choline is rich in food sources such as; eggs, beef steak (grass fed, organic),
salmon, navy beans , baked beans, Brussels sprouts, kidney beans, cooked broccoli

Soy
Soy is not advised during pregnancy. It is suspected to have negative oestrogenic effects.
Asian cultures consume fermented soy.

Fish
Fish is good for fetal brain development. Avoid large contaminated fish

Fish with high mercury levels;
Marlin
Pike
Swordfish
shark
Tuna
Halibut
Mackerel
Bass
Lobster

Fish with lower mercury levels;
Salmon (farmed has less mercury)
Herring
Anchovies
Sardines
Rainbow trout
Calamari
Flounder
Tilapia
Trout

Dioxins
Dioxins are unwanted byproducts of industrial and combustion processes and are also in
fish. They break down very slowly in the body. Highest levels are present in herring and
farmed salmon. Very high levels are present in Baltic Sea fish (and fish from other
contaminated waters). These must be avoided.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls
Nearly all human blood, fat, or breast milk show PCBs
Highest levels occur in farmed fish and inorganic butter. Avoid eating the skin and fat
found along ventral, lateral and abdominal areas where PCBs are most heavily deposited.

Environmental Toxins
Typically pregnant women have dozens of toxic or cancer causing chemicals in their
bodies. Always try to use clean personal care products on the skin and hair. Remember
makeup. 60% of lipsticks on the USA market contain lead. Indoor air pollution from
candles, plug in air fresheners and other scented household products. Choose a non toxic
cleaning product eg. Ecover. Turn wifi off at night and never carry a mobile phone on the
body in a pocket, do not place a laptop or ipad on the body, do not place a mobile phone
next to the head or next to the bed during sleep on a night stand.

Basic principles and miscellaneous
Fresh organic whole foods where possible
Lots of fresh vegetables and fruits
Whole grains taken with each meal
All nuts but NOT peanuts peanuts and peanut butter , have a mould on them called
aflatoxin. Its is highly carcinogenic.
Legumes every day
**Organic cold pressed flaxseed oil 20mls daily** never cook with this or heat it as it
destroys it. Use as a dressing. Fill a ja with a couple of bulbs of garlic, 2 teaspoons of a herb
eg; dill and the fill the jar with half flax oil and half apple cider vinegar. Use daily as a
dressing. The ACV has amazing health properties. It also will keep the stomach at the correct
acidity for extracting nutrients from food and suppressing candida and bacterial over-
growth. You can take 15mls ACV in 250ml water 20 minutes prior to eating food if preferred.
Gastric reflux is caused by not acidic enough stomach acid , leading to the muscle at the
bottom of the food pipe (oesophagus) not closing in pregnancy, progesterone relaxes round
muscle and reflux can also occur. Omit the ACV drink if this happens but do not be tempted
to take an ant- acid. Try to rather manage the symptoms. These tips may be useful.
Do not eat after 8pm
Remain upright after eating in the sitting position.
Smaller meals but more regular.
Avoid spicy food and fizzy drinks

**Always dry bake, steam or boil on a low heat. This retains the nutrients in the food. Bake
on 170**
Pasteurised honey or maple syrup or raw sugar to sweeten. Black strap molasses is a
sweetener, natural and an excellent source of iron.
Mild herbs, spices, garlic and ginger.
Soak all dried fruit and ensure it is unsulphured and do not snack on it

**Bake when possible on 170* it retains more nutrients to bake for longer on a lower heat

Not permitted
canned foods
Processed foods
Sugar
Salt
Fizzy drinks
Yeast extracts and stock cubes, soy sauce/tamari/miso
Ice creams, chocolate, sweets
Cooking oils such as canola

Drinks/fluids
1-2L fresh vegetable juice plus water.
Juices:- carrot only and apple. Try juicing greens ( never add spinach) with an apple to
sweeten. Organic herb teas and chicory is an excellent coffee substitute. Only one cup per
day.

Vegetables
Raw and cooked twice a day including salad. As many varieties as possible including
potatoes which should be consumed most days with most meals

Fruit
Can be taken as a snack and as part of a meal. Up to 4 servings per day. Try to eat more
vegetables than fruit as the mineral content is higher. Daily add 5 dried apricots chopped to
porridge and soak both overnight. **The apricots are an excellent source of iron**

Legumes
Peas lentils beans: organic. Soak for 12 hours and then drain, cover and sprout for 12 hours.
Rinse and cook. Take these once or twice daily with a cereal grain

Cereal Grains
Brown rice, oats, millet , quinoa, buckwheat, sweet corn, barley.
Have a small serving with each meal and also 2 small slices of rye or sour dough bread with
lunch and dinner
Avoid pasta. Eat brown rice twice weekly.

Nuts
Never peanut butter. It has a mould called aflatoxin. It is highly carcinogenic. Other nut
butters such as almond are good. Tahini allowed. Take nuts as part of a meal. Soaking will
help to make them easier to digest. Always chop small or crush to avoid choking. Almonds
are high in iron.

Meat / eggs / fish
Eggs, turkey, chicken, white fish ( but occasional red organic grass fed red meat if desired )
with all meals always organic also where possible

Avoid soy and its products

Supplements
Consider taking vitamin
D3 4000-5000 IU + K2 x1 daily
Zinc 50mg x 1 daily daily
Selenium 200mcg x 1 daily
Folic acid 5mg x 1 daily
