1. Theme of the Project:-
It includes an LED operated by; a keyboard by which a user enters codes or
programming; a programmable circuit including a microcontroller, data memory and program
memory. The device opens the lock in response to a correct code entered through the
keyboard.

2. Working Principle :-
Our device utilized the 16F84 micro controller to control all of the inputs and outputs
for the system. While entering the 4-digit password, the micro controller accepts one digit at a
time and subsequently compares each digit to the stored password. Once the correct password
is entered, the micro controller sends an output signal to one of the LEDs to inform the user
that he or she may proceed with unlocking the door.

3. Innovativeness & Originality :-

We being students of Computer Engg. were interested when we understood that
electronics projects are embedded with C Programming Language with which we were quite
familiar. We selected this Project considering our budget and time needed to complete it. One
feature that we later added was that of storing databases of the authorized users to record their
entry and exit times.

4. Block schematic of your project:-

Software/ Tools/ Languages/ Database/ Platform to be

used:

Software: 1) VB (For accessing user database)

2) Turbo C (for embedding with microcontroller)

Theme of Project (Based on/Inspiration/Initiative etc.):

This invention relates to security systems for permitting controlled access through one
or more doors by authorized individuals and in particular to an application where it is desired
to record time of entry and identification of the individuals. We were interested when we
understood that electronics projects are embedded with C Programming Language with which
we were quite familiar. One feature that we later added was that of storing databases of the
authorized users to record their entry and exit times.

• Working Principle (How it Works?/Concept of Project):

Our device utilized the 16F84 micro controller to control all of the inputs and outputs
for the system. The keypad is connected to a 16-key encoder by which all 16 keys are
encoded so that the micro controller can recognize which key is pressed. While entering the
2
4-digit password, the micro controller accepts one digit at a time and subsequently compares
each digit to the stored password. Once the correct password is entered, the micro controller
sends an output signal to one of the LEDs to inform the user that he or she may proceed with
unlocking the door.

• New Concept/Technology/Principle/Internet/Modern Resources used:

By unlocking the door, the locking mechanism remains open for about 20 seconds.
Once the 20-second time interval elapses, the door lock automatically returns to the locked
position. The main features of this electronic door lock are its high reliability, low operating
power consumption, and ease of use.

• Hardware Modules used (e.g. Microprocessor, Microcontroller, PIC’s,

Transducers, Receivers, etc.) & their Use in Project:

1. Keypad Input:
The keypad is used for the following: inputting the password and unlocking the door.

LED Display:
The LED display is used to output information to the user. It consists of two LED's; The
Green LED is on when the door is unlocked. The Red one is on when the door is locked.

2. Micro controller:
This block will input the signals sent from the keypad and process them. It will output signals
to the display for the appropriate message to be displayed. In addition, if the correct password
is entered, the device will either unlock or lock the door.

Timer:
We incorporated the Timer to control the amount of time the door lock was to remain
unlocked.

• Software Modules used (e.g. Front End, Backend, ODBC, GUI, RAD
tools, HLL, etc.) and their use in Project:

Software:

1) VB (For accessing user database): Using this Language, once the user
enters his code his entry and exit time is recorded to his profile.

2) Turbo C (for embedding with microcontroller): Using this Language we

programmed hardware devices to perform their assigned task.

3
Applications (Industrial or Commercial):

i. This system is best suitable for corporate offices, ATMs and home security.
ii. This electronic door lock is evidently appropriate for those who feel they have had enough
of the hassles of dealing with losing or forgetting keys, duplicating keys, or even changing
door locks.
iii. The electronic door lock definitely eliminates the need for conventional keys or key cards
and is indeed the perfect solution to many homes, businesses, and hotels that lack a
reliable and easy to use electronic security door lock.
