Question asked at Namdeb interviews

1.      What is a buchholz relay? Explain operations..

It’s a protection device that protect the Transformer in case of short circuit,
overheating and oil leaks. It has 2 floats.
The top float can only operate the alarm switch but the bottom(has a flap) can trip
the transformer out.

Slight faults : when a slight fault occurs in the transformer, the small bubbles of gas,
which pass upwards to
the conservator, are trapped in the relay housing, thus causing its oil level to fall. As
a result, the upper float
rotates on its hub and operates the alarm switch, thus operating an external alarm
device.

Serious faults : when a serious fault occurs in the transformer, the gas generation is
violent and causes the
oil to rush through the connecting pipe to the conservator.
In the relay this oil surge hits the flap fitted on the lower float (located in front of the
hole for the oil passage)
and causes the rotation of the float itself, thus operating the tripping switch and
disconnecting the
transformer. The float remains in the trip position even if the oil flow comes to a
stop (the reset is done by
means of the push-button).
The tripping device is regulated in such a way that in transformers having forced oil
cooling, the surges
resulting from the starting of the oil circulating pump will not cause mal-operation of
the relay.

An oil leak in the transformer causes the oil level in the relay to fall, thus operating
first the alarm (upper)
float and then the tripping (lower) float.

The ingress of air into the transformer, arising from defects in the oil circulating
system or from other
causes, operates the alarm float.

2.      If you have 380v line, how much will your phase voltage be?
220v

3.      What is the tripping current of a earth leakage in a domestic installations?
20mA

4.      Would you leave the secondary terminal of a CT open?
No, NEVER, because high voltages can be induced. It must always be short circuited if
there is no load/ammeter on it.

5.      Can you measure all 3 phases with a clamp tester at the same time?
No, they balanced each other out. No amps will be read.

6.      Is a 3 phase motor network a balance or unbalanced?
Balanced

7.      What does OLTC stand for?
On Load Tap Changer, used to automatically change the tapping of transformers in the
event of volt drops. Can operate while transformer is on.

8.      How would you do service on an electrical motor?
Isolate and lock out!! Inspect the fins, fan, fan cover, terminal box, cable, gland(earth),
keyway, shaft, end shield, grease motor, blown clean, clean with electro cleaner....etc

9.      How would you do a service on an electrical panel?
Isolate and lock out!!!! Inspect the box, box cover/door, does it close nicely, can dirt
get in, whether it is stable, check the earth(fasten nicely, not corroded), check all
wires whether they are fastened nicely from the earth bar, neutral bar and at the CBs,
can also test the CBs for operation, check to see if maybe water get into panel, blown
panel out, clean with electro cleaner, .....etc

10.  What does it mean that an equipment is double insulated?
There is a second insulation that insulate all conductive parts inside from the casing.
THERE IS NO EARTH!

11.  What is the permissible volt drop of any supply in terms of %?
5%

12.  What is the purpose of a capacitor in a single phase motor?
To start the motor, Single phase motor is not self starting.......

13.  Drawing of direct-on-line/star-delta and explanation.

14.  What are the lock out procedures?

a.      Identify the equipment
b.      Notify the Area Owner and all personnel that will be affected
c.       Get all required permits
d.      Isolate the equipment
e.      Lock out with isolation officer lock, put a tag (reason for lock out, date and
your name)
f.        Put a gang lock on, and put your personal lock on
g.      Everyone can now put their locks on (all locks must have an tag with a
name (the real name no nicknames), dept where employee is working)
h.      Do a Zero Energy Test at the equipment. NB!! Make sure there is no
secondary supply, bleed out all hydraulics,.....etc
i.        Do a Risk Assessment of the Area of work
j.        Work Safely

15.  What does RMS stand for?
Root Mean Square

16.  What is a rpm of a 4 pole motor at 50hz?
1500rpm, S = (120*frequency)/number of poles

17.  How do you determine the size of a conductor to use in a installation?
Calculate the amps the system will draw and check in the Code of Practice....

18.  What does VSD stand for?
Variable Speed Drive

19.  What is the most common cause of electrical fires?
Loose connection, short circuits, overloads

20.  How do you extinguish an electrical fire?
Use the fire extinguisher, the carbon dioxide type......and the....

21.  What is the purpose/importance of earthing?

22.  What must you always keep in mind if you have a CT and an Ammeter in one circuit?
Their RATIO must be the same.

23.  What would you do in the event of fire?
Isolate the area, and lock out. Cut off the supply, notify firemen

24.  What is the purpose of PPE?
For protection/safety, to minimise the injuries

25.   What is a SIMOCODE overload relay (or something in those lines)?
SIMOCODE is a motor management system that combines in just one compact system,
all necessary protection, monitoring and control functions for every motor feeder.
