GWO Basic Safety Training
Applus+K2 is a certified GWO training provider to perform GWO Basic Safety Training for Wind Turbines. The GWO
Basic Safety Training provides you with the basic skills that will enable you to work in a safe manner in the wind
industry, and to meet emergency response training requirements including job safety training modules of working
at height and rescue, first aid, manual handling and fire awareness. The course is developed to strike a balance
between theory and practice, which is underpinned by thorough skills and knowledge assessments conducted by
qualified trainers to provide consistent and measurable outcomes.
INTRODUCTION
The Global Wind Organisation (GWO) is an association of Wind
Turbine owners and manufacturers with the aim of supporting an
injury-free work environment in the wind industry. In response to
the demand for recognizable Basic Safety Training (BST) in the
industry the members of the GWO have developed a safety stand-
ard.
The purpose of GWO standard is to develop a joint training of
health and safety as an important and necessary way forward to
reduce the risk to staff working on wind turbines.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objective of the basic safety training is to enable the delegates
to take care of themselves and others working in the wind industry
in compliance with GWO training standard by having the knowl-
edge and skills of working at heights, manual handling, fire aware-
ness, sea transfer and survival and in case of an emergency to be
able to evacuate, rescue and provide first aid to casualties.
COURSE CONTENT
The course structure is a combination of practical, real life scenario
based training and classroom training.
It’s a 5 days course, consisting of 4 basic modules:
GWO Working at Heights (2 days)
• The risks and dangers of working on wind turbines.
• Legislation and standards for working at height.
• Identify personal protective equipment.
• Put on, store, inspect and use PPE.
• Practice secure behaviour on the tower ladder and assess of
anchorage points.
• The proper use of evacuation equipment.
• Correct and safe behaviour in emergency situations.
GWO First Aid (2 days)
• Perform first aid within the current guidelines.
• Identify and explain the normal function, symptoms and
signs of more or less serious injuries and illnesses.
• Show the correct flow of documents for an emergency in
the tower or nacelle.
• Perform lifesaving first aid under the L- ABCDE.
• Use an AED correctly.
• Use the right equipment and technology on an extreme
illness or accident scenario.
GWO Fire Awareness (1/2 day)
• Understand the meaning of the standards.
• Knowledge of different fire types.
• Handle different extinguishing agents.
• Understand the physics of fire and smoke spread.
• Fire risks and equipment on a wind turbine tower.
• Use powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers &fire blankets.
• Evacuate correctly in case of fire.
GWO Manual Handling (1/2 day)
• Understand the meaning of the standards.
• Understand which elements of the work environment can
increase the risk of muscle and skeletal injury.
• Understanding the importance of good working technique.
• Recognise body signals for work overload and know what
action should be taken.
• Practically solve various ergonomic problems.
• Understand the importance of exercise to reduce the risk
of muscle and skeletal disorders.

TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT OUTCOME

• On successful completion of the course, candidates will be

awarded GWO approved certification for the 4 separate modules.
• The validation period for each module is 24 months.

• Installation & maintenance subcontractors.

EQUIPMENT

All technical equipment will be provided by Applus+ K2 however you

will need to bring the following:
• Appropriate clothing to climb in.
• Safety footwear.

Applus+K2 training centre or client’s location.

Applus+K2 has comprehensive training facility in country with its
escape platforms suitable for rope access and working at height
training.
