America exhibits all the characteristics of an empire. Due to globalization, it is no longer

relevant to describe imperialism as something necessitating force. It can be described as a

country which imposes will on another.

The causes of the Spanish-American war were many. However, the immediate one was

America’s support for Cuba. Cuba was struggling to attain independence from Spain. Spain’s

brutal repressive rules to halt Cuba’s rebellion were portrayed for the United States public by

various media that engaged in yellow journalism, as well as the U.S’s sympathy for the Cuban

rebels. The increased demand for America’s intervention grew to become an insistent song after

the still unknown sinking Havana of the U.S. ship that had been deployed to protect American

property and citizens after the anti-Spanish riots broke out in Havana. On the other hand, the

Philippine-American war was motivated by reasons like seizing the Philippines would allow the

U.S. to create a great commercial presence in Asia, Filipinos were not able to govern themselves,

and that the U.S feared that Japan or Germany would take control of the country and attain a

strategic advantage in the continent (Public Broadcasting Service, n.d.). Through the conflicting

ideologies on colonialism from both the Filipinos and Americans, it led to war in 1899.

The American Imperialists' main goals were to free independent colonies from European

intervention and avoid scenarios that would make the New World order a battlefield of old

power. In return, the U.S. would now exert its influence peacefully. The goals were aimed at

extending economic and political influence over regions beyond its borders.
