PPB3113 Management Information Systems

Assignment 2 (Group) – 20%

Objective
Students will be able to understand the basic topics in Management Information Systems related to Security and
Privacy.

Assignment details

 Form a group of 2 to 3 people.

 Choose ONE question from the list given in the Attachment.
 Your group must choose only one and it must be different from the other groups.
 Register the name of your selected question with your lecturer. Write the name of your group members
and the question selected on the Assignment Registration form given.

Assignment instructions

 Your assigment is divided into two parts.

1. Part 1: WRITTEN REPORT (10%)
 Prepare a report that :
1. Briefly describe the background of your topic
2. Answer the question asked
 Your report must not exceed 4 pages (excluding appendix).
 This part of the assignment will be mark based on:
o ability to describe the background your topic; (5m)
o ability to discuss the topic in detail; (5m) and
o ability to write a proper report (i.e: formatting, student details, organised etc) (5m).

2. Part 2: VIDEO PRESENTATION (10%)

 Prepare a presentation VIDEO that explains both questions above. Your video must be NOT
MORE THAN 2 minutes.
 You are free to use any method of recording your video e.g: Screencastify, Jing, Powerpoint
recording or simple video recording using mobile phones.
 It is up to the group to decide on how many people or who will be in the video.
 All video must be uploaded to YOUTUBE (you have to create your own Youtube channel).
 This part of the assignment will be mark based on:
o ability to correctly explain your topic; (5m)
o ability to communicate/ deliver the topic in easy to understand manner; (5m)
o ability to create a creative presentation. (5m)

ASSIGNMENT 2 QUESTIONS

1. Research on the web about three recent DoS attacks. Which organizations were targeted?
Who were the perpetrators? Why were these organizations targeted? Prepare a report not
more than 4 pages, comparing and contrasting these incidents.

2. Research on the web about three recent Ransomware attacks. Which organizations were
targeted? Why were these organizations targeted? What were the consequences of these
attack to the organizations? Prepare a report not more than 4 pages, comparing and
contrasting these incidents.

3. Survey your friends and family about the effects of media coverage of computer security-
related incidents. Are people becoming more alert? Does the media coverage change
people's behavior? Why or why not? Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

4. Do you feel the media generate too much hype regarding hackers and crackers? Since
prominent companies such as Microsoft are often hacked into, are you concerned about
your bank account or other sensitive information? Prepare a report not more than 4
pages.

5. Search the web for recent incidents of identity theft involving celebrities. What were the
consequences for the celebrity? How could the celebrity have avoided having their
identities stolen? Did the authorities manage to catch the identity thief? If so, how?
Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

6. Some say that 3D printing will give rise to IP theft and piracy. Search the web for
information about this topic, and present the arguments for and against this view. Do
you believe this will become a problem? Why or why not? Prepare a report not more than
4 pages.

7. Many social media have become an arena for circulating false information. Have you
recently received or forwarded a hoax? What can you do to confirm the authenticity of
messages circulating online? Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

8. Find a recent news story about cyberwar or acts of cyberterrorism. What were the actions
involved? Who was being attacked, and what was the extent of the damage? From the
attacker’s standpoint, do you think the attack was effective? Why or why not?

9. Search the web for hardware and software firewalls. How do they provide protection, and
what does it cost to provide this needed protection? What are the benefits and drawbacks
of each approach? Prepare a one-page report that outlines what you have learned.

10. Search the web for further information on VPNs. How can you obtain a VPN connection?
What are the different scenarios for which you could use a VPN connection? Prepare a
report not more than 4 pages.

11. What levels of user authentication are used at your school and/or place of work? Do they
seem to be effective? What if a higher level of authentication were necessary? Would it be
worth it, or would the added steps cause you to be less productive? Prepare a report not
more than 4 pages.

12. Many people freely “borrow” images from blogs, company websites, or social media to re-
post or for other uses. What are the ethical implications of such behavior? Search the
web for potential legal consequences arising from such behavior, and prepare a one-page
report summarizing your findings. Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

13. Review your university’s password policies. How often do you have to change your
password? What restrictions are placed on choosing passwords? Ask your friends on how
they choose new passwords. Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

14. Insider threats are not new. Use the web to find two examples of insider threats
throughout history that have had a big negative impact on their organization or
government. Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

15. Search the web for ways of protecting data from (industrial) espionage, especially when
traveling. Are there any areas in the world where you have to be particularly vigilant?
Who seems to be most vulnerable to espionage? How can people prevent their data from
being stolen or otherwise compromised? Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.

16. Interview an IS professional about countermeasures taken against virus infections and
other malware. How does the organization protect its information systems infrastructure
against such threats? Has the organization encountered any breaches lately? Is the
professional willing to talk about these breaches? Why or why not? Prepare a report not
more than 4 pages.

17. Assess and compare the security of the computers you use regularly at home, work,
and/or school. What measures do you use at home to protect your computer? What
measures are taken at work or school to protect computers? (If possible, interview IT/IS
personnel at work and/or at school to determine how systems are protected in the
workplace and in classrooms.) Describe any security vulnerabilities you find and explain
how they might be patched. Prepare a report not more than 4 pages.
