Station 1: Watch the water in the beaker (the glitter helps you see what is happening).

Claim (What do you think will happen?)

Glitter will go crazy in the water

Evidence (What did happen?)

The glitter went through a cycle of going to the surface and dropping back down.

Reasoning (Why do you think this happened?)

Convection caused the water to start boiling and the air bubbles rapidly moving up scrambled
the glitter and caused it to go through a cycle of rising and dropping.

Station 2: There are three types of heat transfer; radiation, conduction, and convection.
Radiation is the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves. Conduction is the transfer of
heat by touch (direct contact). Convection is heat transfer through a fluid (liquids or gases).

Read the scenario below and determine the method of heat transfer:

Ryan comes into the house from the backyard after playing soccer with the
neighborhood kids for the past three hours. He is extremely hot and decides to turn on
the air conditioner. The cool air circulates the room.

Identify the type of heat transfer in the scenario above and explain why you selected this
answer.

Radiation. The heat from the sun heated up Ryan, and he was not on the sun. Convection
was the reason why cool air was able to circulate the room.
Station 3: What metal will gain the most heat energy?

Procedure:
1. Observe the 4 conduction bars in the hot water.
2. Read the ranking of the bars heat. (1 hottest and 4 coolest)
3. Record the rank of each bar in the chart below.
4. Write a CER to explain this scenario.

Claim: What do you think will happen?

The metals will reach very similar temperatures.

Steel Temp: Brass Temp: Aluminum Temp: Copper Temp:

4 3 2 1

Evidence: What did happen? Fill in the chart above ranking the different types of metals in
order from hottest to coolest.

Reasoning: Why did this happen?

Conduction heated up the metals. The metals are of different materials that are connected to
the speed of heat they can absorb.

Station 4: There are three types of heat transfer; radiation, conduction, and convection.
Radiation is the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves. Conduction is the transfer of
heat by touch (direct contact). Convection is heat transfer through a fluid (liquids or gases).

Read the scenario below and determine the method of heat transfer:
Kevin is camping with his family and decides to roast marshmallows. Kevin grabs a stick and a
marshmallow and places it in the flames of the fire. The marshmallow melts because it touches
the flames from the fire.

Identify the type of heat transfer in the scenario above and explain why you selected this
answer.
Conduction. The scenario mentions how the marshmallow touched the flame.

Station 5: Create a model that demonstrates heat transfer by radiation.

Materials:
Desk Lamp
Colored paper
Cotton
Stapler
Staples
Thermometer

Claim What do you think will happen?

Model with black paper will be hotter than the one with white paper.

Procedure:
1. Observe the thermometers in each of the two envelopes (black and white).
2. Record the temperature in degrees Celsius on both thermometers.
3. Write a CER to explain which of the two colored envelopes will transfer the heat the
fastest (claim portion of CER written above). Be sure to identify how the heat was transferred
between the lamp and the envelopes.

Evidence: What happened?

Black paper model was 25 degrees Celsius, white was 23 degrees Celsius.

Reasoning: Why did it happen?

Heat was transferred onto the envelopes by radiation. The color black absorbs more heat
than white.
Station 6: There are three types of heat transfer; radiation, conduction, and convection.
Radiation is the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves. Conduction is the transfer of
heat by touch (direct contact). Convection is heat transfer through a fluid (liquids or gases).

Read the scenario below and determine the method of heat transfer:

Emily woke up on a Saturday morning and was glad she didn’t have to go to school. She sat
outside in the sun because she didn’t really feel like doing anything at all. The heat from the
sun is starting to make her sweat.

Identify the type of heat transfer in the scenario above and explain why you selected this
answer.

Radiation made Emily sweat. Emily is far away from the sun but still started heating up.

Station 7: Observe the lava lamp: https://youtu.be/xB5FUYNXt9c

The lava lamp consists of oil, wax in a glass, and a heat source (light bulb) placed underneath
the glass. When the lamp is turned on the bulb gets hot. As the bulb heats up some of the heat
from the bulb is transferred to the glass by 1)
radiation
which occurs when heat is transferred between two objects that are not touching each other.
(The bulb is not touching the glass.)

As the glass heats up, some of its heat is transferred to the wax by
2)
conduction
the heat transfer between two objects that are touching each other.

As the wax heats up it begins to melt and become less dense begins to rise. As the wax rises,
some of its heat is lost. After it has been at the top for awhile it loses most of its heat and
becomes denser so it sinks. The movement of wax in a lava lamp is a
3)
convection
Current, a heat source can heat up air or liquid, causing it to become less dense and rise. As
the air or liquid rises, cooler air or liquid above it sinks because it is denser, and in turn is heated
when it gets close to the heat source.
Station 8: Click on the link below to learn more about the 3 types of heat transfer (Radiation,
conduction and convection). Click on each tab at the top of the page. Once on the page, click
on animation to watch that type of heat transfer. Also, click on the examples tab. Write down 3
other examples of each type of heat transfer below.

Station 9: Observe a model that demonstrates heat transfer of liquids with different
temperatures. Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCO90hvEL1I for 28
seconds and then pause the video and complete your claim below:
Claim (What do you think will happen when a hot water bottle (yellow) is placed on top of a cold
water bottle (blue)? What do you think will happen when a cold water bottle (blue) is placed on
top of a hot water bottle (yellow)?)
Blue water will sink as yellow water rises

Continue watching the video clip until the end and complete the evidence and reasoning
statements below.

Evidence: What happened? Make observations below about the movement of the colored
water.
The model with the hot water on top stayed almost the same. It mixed into green a bit in the
middle. The other model had the hot water on the bottom, the movement of the water was
more obvious than it was in the first model. The whole thing was also green.

Reasoning: Why did it happen?

The yellow water had less density because it was hot, and so it would always rise to the top.
Blue had less density because it was cold so it would always stay at the lowest point. The first
model had blue bottom and yellow top, so there wasn’t much action as it only mixed in the
middle. The second model switched the colors and the water mixed much more, the whole
thing was green, with water moving. The water wanted to go to its place because of its
temperatures.
