Learning Activity 1: WHAT IS TECHNICAL DRAWING?

YOUR GOAL
Differentiate technical drawing and artistic drawing.

DO YOU STILL REMEMBER!

During your elementary days you are asked by your teacher/s to draw pictures and color them. The drawing you did is what
we called artistic drawing. For this lesson you will learn the other type of drawing, technical drawing, and differentiate it from artistic
drawing.

LET'S LEARN!

Two types of drawing

 Artistic Drawing - generally very subjective (based on personal feelings) and open to interpretation (different people have
different opinions about the art works). It expresses abstract ideas (things that you cannot touch but you can feel them).

Examples:

 Technical Drawing - universal language of technology, meaning trained individuals can understand the drawing of others
with the same interpretation. Communicates ideas by means of pictures, drawings, graphs, and symbol.

Examples:

Technical drawing consists of the following basic elements:

 Lines – used to express characteristics of designed products clearly and accurately.
 Symbols – used to show elements in the drawing.
 Numbers – it represents the scale measurement of designed or layout.

Who uses technical drawing:

 Architects – they used technical drawing to plan and design a structure to be build.
 Engineers – they are the one who analyzes and build/execute the plan and design made by an architect or
draftsmen.
 Draftsmen – they are skilled professionals who draw plans for buildings or machines and can employed in different
fields.

Why technical drawing is important:

 Helps builders create objects without errors, delay, or other costly issues.

Learning Activity 2: LETTERS

YOUR GOAL
Know the Different lettering styles and techniques

DO YOU STILL REMEMBER!

Now that you know what technical drawing is, its elements, people who uses it and its importance, we will now start with
the basic skill you need.

LET'S LEARN!
Skill in lettering is a basic requirement for you in the technical drawing. You must be exposed to the lettering activities to
orient you on the quality standard in printing letters.

Lettering is used as a form of communication. As applied in drawing, it adds beauty if it is well-printed. Likewise, it can
destroy the appearance of the drawing once it is not done well.

The Four Group of Letters

1. Gothic Letters. They are the most simple and readable among the four group of letters. It has a uniform stem. It should
be applied only for poster and advertisement purposes. For technical drawing we used Single Stroke Vertical Gothic
Lettering which will be discuss on the next topic.

2. Roman Letters. The thickness of these letters is not uniform. they have pointed stem which is called “serif”. They must
be used for books, magazine, newspapers, and text matters.

3. Spanish Script. It is considered as artistic letters. It is purposely used for certificates, diplomas, citations, greetings, and
invitation cards.

4. Text or Old English. This style is the most artistic among the four groups of letters. Like Spanish script, it is also used for
certificates, diplomas, citations, greetings, and invitation cards.
