EG1108 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

TUTORIAL # 1
SEMESTER I, AY2010-2011

Tutors will discuss problems 6 to 9 and, if time permits, problem 10.

Problems 1 to 5 are simpler in nature and are meant for students to practice on their own.
Solving these problems will help them to check their understanding of underlying concepts.
Students are encouraged to solve these problems before attending the tutorial session.

1. Determine potential difference V1 in Fig. Q1-1. What is the current in 1 Ω resistor?

[Answer: 10 V, 0.2 A]

Fig. Q1-1
2. Taking the branch currents as indicated in Fig. Q1-2, write two KVL equations such
that no resistive branch current is excluded.
[One possible answer: 6 − 12 I 4 − 5 I 2 − I1 = 0, 5 + I 1 − 10 I 3 = 0 ]

3. In the Fig. Q1-3, the rectangular box encloses a network consisting of sources and
resistors. After connecting a 5 V source to ‘a’ and ‘b’, terminal voltage and current
are indicated in the diagram. Find V, I and power dissipated by 5V source.
[Answer: V = 5V, I = -2A, Pdiss = -10 W]

Fig. Q1-3
4. Find currents I1 and I2 in the circuit of Fig. Q1-4. Determine the power generated or
absorbed by the two sources.
[Answer: I1 = 3 A, I2 = -0.6, 8V source generates 24 W, 2V source absorbs 1.2 W]

(a) The open circuit voltage and internal resistance of this source.
(b) The current drawn from this supply when a 70 Ω load is connected to it.
[Answer: (a) 80 V, 10 Ω, (b) 1 A]
9. Determine IS, I1 and I2 in the circuit below.

10. You made a voltage divider circuit (Fig. Q1-10) using an ideal voltage source (VS =
100 V) and two resistors with the objective to obtain 60 V for an external load (RL). In
order to verify the design, you used a voltmeter to measure the output voltage of the
voltage divider (VO). Internal resistance of the voltmeter is Rm.
(a) What is the voltmeter reading if Rm is 50 kΩ?
(b) What is the reading if a digital multi-meter with Rm of 1 MΩ is used?
[Answer: (a) 58.59 V, (b) 59.92 V]
