2 System overview

RDI 24-001D samples the signals on its input ports and generates proprietary “NMEA sentences”
containing the data. The sentences are transmitted to the VDR using serial and/or Ethernet
communication.

The RDI 24-001D is not a VDR core module. This means that the RDI 24-001D does not download
its program code and configuration from the VDR, and that it must be configured locally using a PC
with an Ethernet interface and an Internet browser.

The RDI 24-001D may be powered from the VDR if connected to a PoE port on the DPU. An
external power supply is required for RDIs which are connected to a LAN/SIU port or a serial input
on the DPU.

RDIs (RDI 24-001D and RDI 08-001A) may be connected in a daisy chain; i.e. a number of RDIs
may be connected, utilizing only one port on the VDR.

Virtually, an unlimited number of RDIs may be connected to a VDR.

RDI 24-001D supports SWAP. This means that a defective RDI 24-001D can easily be replaced
without having to reconfigure the new RDI. This is done by moving a micro SD card containing the
configuration from the defective RDI to the new RDI.

3 Installation
The RDI 24-001D may be installed on, for example, a bulkhead using the mounting angles supplied
with the product. The RDI may also be installed on a DIN rail – this option requires p/n 3303690-10
“DIN rail clip for RDIs and VRI-002”.

The cables to the RDI must be secured properly using, for example, a strain relief plate and cable
ties.

As an alternative, Danelec can supply cabinets for holding two, four or ten RDIs

The RDI must not be installed in a small compartment with insufficient ventilation.

3.1 Grounding of the RDI cabinet

The RDI enclosure must be grounded locally to a designated grounding point on the vessel if not
already grounded via the mounting angles. Connect a ground wire with ring crimp terminal to one
of the mounting screws (M4) or one of the screws (M3) used for fixing the mounting angles to the
RDI enclosure.

3.2 Avoiding ground loops

The inputs and outputs on the RDI 24-001D are galvanically isolated.
For the data, always use shielded cables – however, in order to avoid ground loops, cable shield
should not be connected to the RDI*.

The only exception is where the RDI 24-001D is installed close to the DM100 VDR DAU – if that
is the case, it is acceptable to use a standard prefabricated RJ45-RJ45 STP patch cable from the RDI
to the DAU.

* The shield on the cable used for transmitting data to the VDR must be connected to the VDR DAU.

Note, for equipment which is not using dry contacts:

The input interfaces on the RDI 24-001D are divided into four groups with common “reference”.
Do not connect signals which may have different ground potential to the same group i.e. all signals
to a group must originate from one piece equipment or from equipment using the same grounding
point.

How to connect dry contact is described in section 10.

3.3 Daisy chaining

RDIs may be connected in a daisy chain. The daisy chain is based on RS-422 communication. In
general, no more than nine RDIs should be daisy chained and the daisy chain should not be longer
than ten meters.

MAN11620-10 Page 7/39

It is technically possible to make longer daisy chains and/or daisy chains containing more than nine
RDIs – contact Danelec Marine A/S for technical advice if this is required.

3.4 Description of the front panel

3.4.1 I/F for daisy chain

TxA and TxB: Used for transmission of data to the daisy chain or for transmission of data to the
VDR (Serial link).

RxA and RxB: Used for receipt of data from the daisy chain.

TxD and G: Not used.

V+ and 0: Power to the next RDI in the daisy chain.

3.4.2 Data out

Data may be sent to the VDR using Ethernet. Only one of the connecters must be used at any given
time.

The RJ45 socket is typically used for connecting the RDI to one of the LAN ports or the SIU port
on the DM100 DPU.

The Wago connector is used for connecting the RDI to the RDI or RVI port on the DM100 DPU. In
this case, the VDR is able supply power to the RDI.

3.4.3 SWAP
See section 3.10.

3.4.4 Functionality of LEDs

3.4.4.1 Power LED
The power LED is on when power is applied to the RDI

3.4.4.2 SWAP LED

Normally off.
Yellow - while updating from SC card.
Green - for one minute if the update is successful.
Red - for one minute if the update is unsuccessful.
The LED blinks (2Hz) when the RDI is in configuration mode.

3.4.4.3 RX LED
The RX LED flickers when data is received from the daisy chain. The LED blinks (2Hz) when the
RDI is in configuration mode.

3.4.4.4 TX LED
The TX LED flickers when data is transmitted to the VDR or to the daisy chain. The LED blinks
(2Hz) when the RDI is in configuration mode.

3.4.4.5 LINK LED

The LINK LED is turned on when Ethernet link is detected by the RDI and will in addition flicker
depending on the activity on the Ethernet.

3.4.5 Reset
A paper clip or similar may be used to reset the RDI to a special configuration mode. The reset
switch behind the small hole in the front panel must be pressed for about three seconds. While in
this mode, the SWAP, RX and TX LED blinks (2Hz).

The IP address of the RDI will be forced to 10.0.0.254/255.255.255.0. If the RDI is connected to the
VDR using the 6-way Wago 3.81mm on the front, disconnect that cable before pressing reset.

signals to a group must originate from one piece of equipment or from equipment using the same
grounding point.

3.5.2 Power input

RDIs which are not powered from the VDR must be powered from an external power supply –
typically 24V IEC60945 nominal.

3.7 VDR power budget

The DM100 VDR is able to supply power to RDIs which are connected to the RDI and RVI port on
the VDR. In general, the RDI port may supply power to four RDIs (RDI 24-001D, RDI 08-001A)
while the RVI port may supply power to three RDIs.
If one of the ports (RDI or RVI) is not used, six RDIs may be connected to the other port.

3.7.1 Power stealing from RVI port

If an RVI is connected to the RDI port, the port may in addition supply power to one RDI which
will then have to be connected to the SIU port or a LAN port (for transmission of data).

3.8 Description of the power circuitry

The RDI 24-001D may use the VDR or an external power supply as power source. In addition, an
RDI 24-001D is able to by-pass power to the next RDI in the daisy chain.

Simplified functional overview

Important notice: Do not connect more than one power source to the RDI 24-001D!

3.9 Description of device ID

A device ID is required for identification purposes by the VDR when more than one RDI is
connected to a serial input or a network channel on the VDR (utilizing a daisy chain).

Device ID may either be auto-generated or set manually.

3.9.1 Auto-generated device ID

This feature should only be used for simple systems containing few RDIs.
The device ID will be set according to the RDI’s position in the daisy chain. The RDI closest to the
VDR will get device ID = 1, the next in the daisy chain will get device ID = 2 and so on.
The number of RDIs in one daisy chain with this feature enabled must not exceed fifteen.

3.9.2 Manually configured device ID

Manually configured device ID should be used for complicated systems containing many RDIs,
because the IDs for the RDIs will be static and not affected by how the RDIs are connected.

3.10 SWAP
RDI 24-001D supports SWAP, i.e. a defective RDI 24-001D can easily be replaced without having
to reconfigure the new RDI. This is done by moving the micro SD card containing the configuration
from the defective RDI to the new RDI.

4 The configuration interface on the RDI

The RDI 24-001D is configured using a PC with an Ethernet interface and an Internet browser.
The PC must be connected to the RJ45 socket on the front panel. If the RDI is connected to the
VDR using the 6-way Wago 3.81mm on the front, disconnect that cable before connecting the PC.

The IP address of the RDI is probably set to default (10.0.0.254/255.255.255.0) if the RDI 24-001D
is connected to the VDR using serial link. The IP address may be changed if an Ethernet link is
used. If the IP address is unknown, use the reset switch at the front panel for resetting the IP address
temporarily to default (10.0.0.254/255.255.255.0)

7 Description of VCC templates

Creating the VDR Explorer/OPT configuration manually for an installation with many digital and
analog signals is impractical. Danelec has as a consequence developed the “VDR Explorer
Configuration Creator” which can generate tab pages for the VDR Explorer/OPT configuration
based on data in an Excel sheet.

The VCC tool is a Windows application which may be installed from the manual CD supplied with
the product.

The VCC tool requires two input files:

1) A VCC file which contains decoder templates and basic settings which affect the layout of the
generated tab pages, for example the maximum number of panels (columns) on a tab page. A
suitable VCC file (RDI decoder templates Vx.vcc) is included on the manual CD supplied with the
product.

2) An Excel sheet which contains data related to the installation, primarily a description (label) for
the sensors connected to the RDI. A template (VCC template for RDIs V10.xlsx) is included on the

7.2 Description of VCC template for RDIs V10.xlsx

The template is an Excel sheet with 16 columns. Only “yellow” cells must be changed. The
template has sections of rows for two RDI 24-001D and RDI 08-001A. However, “copy and paste”
may be used to modify the sheet to cover any combination of RDIs. Note that the sheet contains
some examples which must be deleted or overwritten.

Column A, special tags

Special tags, which control the format for the tab pages may be written in this column. Three
possibilities exist:

NEW_TAB:<Title for tab page>

NEW_PANEL
NEW_OBJECT

Column B, template name

A reference to the decoder template in the .VCC file

Column C, comment
Optional free text

Column D, decoder name

This will be the name of the actual decoder generated by the VCC tool. This is only relevant when a
decoder library is generated.

Column E, decoder folder

This will be the folder for the actual decoder generated by the VCC tool. This is only relevant when
a decoder library is generated.

Column F, serial channel

This column must contain a reference to the serial input or network channel to where the RDI sends
data to the VDR.

Ranges
0-11 serial inputs on the DM100 DPU
16-39 serial inputs on SIUs and RDIs
200-215 Ethernet network channels

Column G, object factor

May be used for calibrating analog data.
For example, if it is known that full scale (4095) corresponds to 100%, factor may be set to
100/4095 and no further calibration will be necessary.

Column H, object offset

May be used for calibrating analog data in combination with “object factor”.
The formula is: factor x (value + offset)

Column I, object label

A description of what the sensor connected to the RDI input is “representing”, for example
“Watertight door 1 SB”. The VCC tool will ignore the row if this cell is left empty.*
* The row will not be ignored when generating a decoder library.

Column J, text_when_low
The definition of low input for digital data, for example “Close”

Column K, text_when_high
The definition of high input for digital data, for example “Open”

Column L, device ID
The device ID for the RDI

Column M, bit
A value required by the decoder template for RDI 24-001D

Column N, field
A value required by the decoder template for RDI 08-001A

Column O, unit
Optional prefix for analog values

Column P, format
Optional formatter for analog values according to the table below:

The “format” field is similar to the one used in Visual Basic. The maximum length of a formatter
will be limited to 10 characters, including the decimal point. E.g.:

Formatter Data to display

- 14.75 0.336 -17 278

F0 14 0 -17 278

F00.00 14.74 00.34 -17.00 278.00

F0.000 14.750 0.336 -17.000 278.000

A000.0 014.8 000.3 017.0 278.0

N000.0 -014.8 -000.3 017.0 278.0

By replacing the “F” with an “A” the result will be formatted into an absolute value.
By replacing the “F” with an “N” the result will be formatted into the negated value.
The following syntax is not allowed: “F0.” and “F.0”

7.3 Generating tab pages

10 How to connect dry contacts (contact closure) to the RDI

10.1 “Classic” topology

The classical way of connecting dry contact to a digital interface, is to use a common power supply
for the digital interface and the dry contact. The RDI 24-001 supports this.

Note the following:

- Above topology must not be used if the power source for the RDI is the VDR!
- The input mode for the digital interfaces on the RDI 24-001D must be configured to “Low
input”.

10.2 Recommended topology (minimum)

Implement this topology as minimum when possible. Note, that the topology described in section
10.1 must not be used if the power source for the RDI is the VDR.

The digital interfaces on the RDI 24-001 will supply power to the dry contacts when mode is
configured to “Contact closure”.

10.3 Recommended topology (optimal)

In order to achieve the best possible system separation, implement below topology when possible,
i.e. if the number of interfaces on the RDI allows for this.

(The digital interfaces on the RDI 24-001 must be configured to “Contact closure”.)
