MODULE 1: Origins of Phenomenology and Existentialism

CLASS ORIENTATION ON CLASS POLICIES AND GUIDELINES

Overview
The main purpose of this module is to lead students in understanding the origins
of the term,‘phenomenology’ and ‘existentialism’, history of its movement, relevant
philosophical, historical and disciplinary backgrounds.

Topic Coverage

1. What is phenomenology and existentialism? What is their difference?


2. Greek origins of phenomenology and existentialism.
3. Historical Development during the 19th and 20th Century.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the module, the students would be able to:

1. Discern and understand what is phenomenology and existentialism.


2. Explain the significance of phenomenology and existentialism.
3. Discuss and explain the origins and historical development of the two theories.
4. Differentiate the theories from each other.

Note: You can ask a friend/sibling or anybody in your house to watch the video together
with you.

Activity 2: Reflection. In the answer sheet (attached), briefly state what you
understood from the videos. What is phenomenology? Existentialism?

Activity 3: Let’s Share. Let’s compare our answers. Do we have a common
understanding? / Try to ask the friend/sibling that watched the video with you, of
what they have understood. Share your own understanding and see if you have the
same idea.
To further know existentialism and phenomenology, let’s try to trace the early
roots in history of the two movements, use the guide questions below after reading
the articles provided.

Guide Questions for Historical Tracing:
1. Whose Greek philosopher started the dictum “know thyself?” What does this
philosopher mean in that dictum? How do you relate to the dictum?
2. Who are the chief exponents of existentialism?
3. What Greek word does phenomenology originated? What does this Greek word
mean?
4. Who is the chief exponent of phenomenology as we know today? How does he
explain phenomenology?

To further enhance the learning on existentialism and phenomenology, a


presentation will be given by the teacher. (Ppt copy link will be provided)

4. Give examples of your experiences that relates to the two theories.

Phenomenology as Introspection: Think of an unforgettable experience you


have had. Remember how you reacted to that experience. Then, try to ask or interview
people with the same experience? Did you have the same reaction? Did you do
something similar in that particular experience? Did you have the same understanding
of why and how that experience happened? List down important information’s that you
can share in class/teacher for the next module.
