Antigone:

The major conflict is about emotions and laws. Antigone’s emotions to honor her brother’s dead

body by a proper burial and Creon’s will to honor the country’s laws by punishing Antigone to

death as she has insulted the laws of the country by burying her brother. The conflict arises

because the Creon considers Polyneices, Antigone’s brother, a traitor to his country and wants

his dead body to be left unburied or left dishonored. But Antigone doesn’t consider her brother

as a traitor and she buried his brother properly as per the customs of the country. She considers

burying his brother as god’s law and prefers god’s law to country law. While Creon prefers

country law over god’s law as he thinks that preferring and honoring county law will prove him

as a good king because good kings honor their country’s laws themselves and don’t let anyone to

dishonor their country’s laws.

The two individuals of the conflict, Antigone, and Creon, represent their preferences about laws.

Antigone thinks that country laws are nothing in front of god’s laws. God allows the family

members to bury their dead ones with honor and prestige. If she buries her brother then god will

mercy on his brother and her while if she doesn't bury her brother then god’s aggression will be

her fate. While the other part of the conflict, Creon, thinks that he must punish Antigone and

honor the laws of the country. Creon thinks that to honor the country’s laws is first and foremost

duty of him. So, natural emotions for the brother are on one side while the honor of country’s

laws is on another side. Another case is that it’s also a conflict between a presumed culprit and

criminal, and the king. So, one side is stronger which is Creon, as he is the king of the country

while another side is weaker which Antigone as she is facing Creon as a criminal with a self-

belief of facing death next moment.

There is more than one reason which qualifies Antigone a heroic figure. First of all, Antigone

buries her brother with honor and dignity. Secondly, Antigone prefers emotions, family and

god’s command over man-made laws. Thirdly, Antigone defends herself in front of King Creon.

She defends with a belief that she will be sentenced to death soon but shows no fear in her

words. She thinks that her death will be a gift from god as she is defending god’s laws and she is

considering god as an ultimate authority. So, all these are the reasons which prove Antigone as a

heroic figure.
The life of Galileo:

The significance of Galileo’s discoveries is as important to know as oxygen to breath. He

discovered dots in the Jupiter. He assumed these dots as the moons of Jupiter. These moons are

four actually. By discovering these moons, Galileo presented a new side of the galaxy. He gave

people a new thought that they must revise their belief and approach about the solar system. He

made an argument by presenting the “concept” of moons in the Jupiter that these moons have not

to revolve around the earth. So when we say that Jupiter’s moons have nothing to do or revolve

around the earth then we are actually challenging the old sacred concept which was based on

religion. This concept showed everything revolving around the earth. Why had earth got enough

importance in this regard that everything revolves around the earth? Because this thinking gave

them the sense of superiority that “we” are the center of the universe as we live on earth and

everything obeys the earth by revolving around the earth, so we are superior. This sense of

superiority led them to the false world, and Galileo unveiled to them the new world of truth.

The philosophical significance of this discovery is about shaking the sense of superiority which

arouses due to the concept that as human beings are living on the earth or God has chosen earth

for them and He made everything revolving around the earth, so we, human being, are superior.

Human beings are, no doubt, superior, but the concept behind that sense of superiority was not

true that we are superior as everything revolves around the earth. So Galileo did a great job by

doing such significant discoveries.

Another discovery about mountains and valleys on the surface of earth’s moon is also significant

because it shows the imperfection of earth which was supposed as perfect before this discovery.

The perfection and sense of superiority are still going parallel. There was another belief that what
God makes is always perfect. There is no doubt in it, but what is the definition of the perfection?

Let it also on God to decide it. The problem of the people of Galileo’s era was that they imposed

their self-defined belief about the perfection of earth, but God made earth perfect in another way

which actually Galileo presented in his discoveries. The people believed earth as a perfect sphere

which Galileo denied and discovered mountains and valleys on earth which show that it’s not a

perfect sphere.

Science interacts with other dimensions of human life like it intersect with economic factors,

social factors, and political factors. The philosophy behind it is embracing science or giving

science a warm welcome. Science empowers economy and politics if it is embraced with an open

mind. It also purifies social factors or believes if these beliefs are combined with science. The

conflict with Galileo was the same his discoveries were a great effort to empower political,

social, and economic sectors. Science is a human activity and it needs wealth to prove its worth.

This was the Galileo’s point in this regard.

Scientific conclusions influence the understanding of human beings about who we are regarding

our place in the world. Galileo’s discoveries introduce the new dimensions of our galaxy. Galileo

was a lighthouse for the human being to relocate our place in the world. The concept of our place

was sacred but backed up with false understandings of revolving everything about the earth. So,

Galileo’s scientific conclusions influenced the understanding of human beings about who we are

regarding our place in the world. This was the major breakthrough which ended in a bad way as

far as Galileo’s life is concerned.
