Name: Manuel Cusicanqui

For this assessment, you will investigate and explain different examples or technologies that relate to the
properties and interactions of electromagnetic waves. You may choose any method listed below to complete this
inquiry project. If you have another method of presentation that you would like to use, please consult your
instructor for permission prior to completing this activity.

Method of Presentation:
● Power Point presentation
● Brochure
● Word document
● Other forms may be approved by your instructor

Inquiry Instructions:

Choose two of the following technological devices. For each one, complete the required research and write
about how the devices use wave behavior to transmit or capture information. Remember to use your own words
and properly cite your sources.

You must gather at least 3 reliable resources. Your citation should include: name of newspaper, magazine or
internet website where article or story was found, title of the story/article, date it was published and/or posted on
the internet. If an internet resource was used, provide an exact url link (web address) of the article/story.
(For example: The Physics of Microwave Ovens, 2010, http://tobyzerner.com/microwaves/)

Technological Devices to choose from:

● Microwave
● Radio
● Remote control
● WiFi
● X-ray
● Gamma radiation

Respond to the following questions for each device:

Device 1

1. Describe the device and its function.

It is a rectangular device which heats and cooks food.
2. What form of electromagnetic radiation does it use?
It uses microwaves.
3. Describe the frequency and wavelength range of this type of electromagnetic wave.
Microwaves possess wavelength in a range of 30 cm. Its frequency can vary depending on the measurement,
300 Mhz (1m) and 300 Ghz (1mm).
4. Using the information above and details from your research, write a paragraph of five sentences or more
explaining how the device uses the behavior and characteristics of the electromagnetic wave to function.
Remember the writing tips from the lesson, and use facts and details to explain your topic sentence.
Microwaves ovens use microwaves frequencies, this one is between infrared rays and radio waves. The
microwaves ovens used the electromagnetic radiation in order to heat the food. In addition the microwaves
and its radiation can also cook food. There is a tube inside the microwave called the magnetron, this one
causes the food to absorb the microwaves. The water molecules within the food is used by the microwaves
in order to heat it or cook it.

Device 2

1. Describe the device and its function.

It's a rectangular device with an antenna, it emits sounds, normally used to listen to news or music,
entertainment purposes.
2. What form of electromagnetic radiation does it use?
It uses radiowaves.
3. Describe the frequency and wavelength range of this type of electromagnetic wave.
Frequency is measured by Hz (hertz), and the wavelength range varies depending on the quantity of Hz, for
example 30 to 300 kHz equals 1m to 100km.
4. Using the information above and details from your research, write a paragraph of five sentences or more
explaining how the device uses the behavior and characteristics of the electromagnetic wave to function.
Remember the writing tips from the lesson, and use facts and details to explain your topic sentence.
By using the example of a radio as the device, there is a transmitter and receiver. The radio wave is
transmitted by a device and then the antenna that the radio possesses allows it to receive that energy. Let’s
say that someone spoke to a microphone, then that sound would be transmitted by the radio waves. These
sounds would go from the studio, which is the transmitter, to the radio, which is the receiver. Radio
channels are based on the frequency, for example the 89.7 FM would have a frequency of 89.7 megahertz.
