DHY292 Practicum Requirements Fall, 2020

1. *Ultrasonic evaluations using Cavitron and EMS on separate patients. Pre and
post ultrasonic scaling check by the same dental hygienist instructor on a
patient with moderate subgingival calculus. Deposits removal check must be
done prior to hand instrumentation. Must be completed in either Term 3 or 4.

2. *Nutritional counseling evaluation with patient that has moderate to high caries
risk determined by faculty and the student. Due by November 13; to be
evaluated by Ms. Kollasch. Evaluation forms completed by patient and student
must be submitted.

3. *Radiography evaluations (evaluated by Ms. Kollasch)


a. One FMS on patient due by mid-November
b. One vertical BW survey on a patient (4 images) due by early October.
c. One Pan on a patient, due mid-November.
d. Two horizontal BW surveys on adult patients (at least one must exposed with
sensor), due by end of November
e. One BW survey on a patient in primary or mixed dentition with a size 0 or 1
PSP receptor; due Term 2,3, 4, or 5

4. *Instrument evaluation – Gracey Curets – both anterior and posterior areas on a


patient with moderate subgingival calculus deposits. Must be evaluated by
hygiene instructor or adjunct. Same instructor must do final check. Due by 3rd
week of October.

5. *Treatment plan evaluation (1 patient). Patient selection must have instructor


approval. Radiographs (from dentist or DMACC), before and after photos,
computerized print-out of periodontal charting, and caries risk assessment
forms must all be included. Plan due on or before early November. Evaluated
by Ms. Hibbs.

6. *Two patient photo evaluations using an intraoral camera to accompany the


treatment plan (see # 5) – separate before and after photos. Evaluated by
Ms. Hibbs. All of the following exposures are required with formatting:
a. mandibular occlusal
b. maxillary occlusal
c. right buccal
d. left buccal
e. anterior retracted
f. full frontal facial
g. right side facial
h. left side facial

7. *Nitrous oxide-oxygen conscious sedation evaluations by the dentist.


a. one student partner (must be completed in Terms 3 or 4)
b. one patient (May be completed in Terms 3, 4 and/or 5)

8. Administration of local anesthesia, cumulative patient experiences completed in


Terms 3, 4 and/or 5.
c. total of 20 field or nerve blocks
d. total of 10 infiltrations

9. *Suture removal experience while at Veterans Administration Medical Center


Dental Service. To be completed on a patient or Sponge Bob in either Term 4
or 5.

10. *Site specific drug therapy evaluation – Evaluated by a dental hygiene instructor.
May be completed on a patient in either Term 3, 4 or 5.

11. *Medical Emergency evaluation – completed by early November.

12. *Air polishing patient evaluation. Pt. must be approved by faculty first.
May be completed in either Term 3, 4 or 5.

13. Stand-up periodontal/sulcular debridement appointment on a clinical patient.


Due in Term 3, 4, or 5.

14. Basic Clinic Outline quizzes on Blackboard® must be completed at 80%


efficiency. Due October 20th (midterm).

15. 2 meaningful Reflection Journals about a valuable patient clinical experience


that has enhanced your professional growth. Due by Dec. 1.

16. Sealants: 1 additional evaluation plus 2 more sealants due in Term 3, 4, or 5

17. Amalgam polishing patient experience. Pre and post check by dentist.
Due in Terms 4 or 5.

*Indicates that there is an evaluation form that must be completed by the evaluating
instructor and “Tech Eval” must be filled in on your OPSCAN. If “Tech Eval” is not
filled in on the OPSCAN, the requirement will be considered unmet.

18. Complete the following minimal number of patients in the following patient
categories: (Patients that you have done Assessment and at least 1 quad of scaling are
considered your completed patient; doing 3 quads of scaling on a patient does not
count as a completed patient).

Students are responsible for keeping an accurate record of meeting these requirements
and this record will be audited by the Program Chairperson at the end of Terms 2, 3, 4,
and 5.
The practicum requirements listed above are minimum requirements. Any student failing
to fulfill the minimum requirements at MASTERY level will be given an incomplete for the
practicum course and will be required to remove the incomplete grade by midterm of the
following semester or a grade of F will result.
