STOICHIOMETRY AND VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS

1. Hemoglobin contains 0.25% iron by weight. Find the mol.wt of ‘Hb’ if it contains four iron atoms
per molecule.

2. A mixture of Al & Zn weighing 1.67g was completely dissolved in acid and evolved 1.69 lit. of H 2 at
STP. What is the Wt.(in gms) of “Al” in original sample?

3. A precipitate of AgCl and AgBr weights 0.4066 g on heating in a current of chlorine the Ag Br is
converted to AgCl and the mixture loses 0.0725 g wt. Find the % of Chlorine in original mixture.

4. A 55gm sample of impure zinc reacts with exactly 129cm3 of hydrochloric acid which has a density
of 1.18 g/cm3 and contains 35% HCl by mass. What is the % of metallic zinc in the sample. Assume
that the impurity is inert to HCl.

5. A carbonate MCO3 of an unknown metal is treated with HCl to produce CO2upon treatment 1 g of
MCO3 with excess HCl, 0.522g of CO2 is produced. Find the weight percent of metal in MCO3.

6. (a)A solution of a mixture of KCl and KOH was neutralised with 120ml of 0.12N HCl. Calculate the
amount in gms of KOH in the mixture.

(b) After titration the resultant solution was made acidic with HNO3. Then excess of AgNO3
solution was added to precipitate the AgCl, which weighed 3.7g after drying. Calculate the
percentage of KOH in the original mixture.

7. Oxides of sodium and potassium contained in a 0.5g sample of Feldspar were converted to respective
chlorides. The weight of the chlorides thus obtained was 0.118g. Subsequent treatment of the
chlorides with AgNO3 gave 0.2451 g of AgCl. What is the percentage of Na2O and K2O in the
mixture.
NH2O = 3.58% K2O=1062%

8. 1gm sample of KClO3 was heated under such conditions that a part of it decomposed according to the
equation.
i ) KClO3 → 2KCl + 3 O2 and the remaining underwent change according to equation .
ii) 4 KClO3 → 3 KClO4 + KCl
If the amount of O2 evolved was 146.8 ml at STP. Calculate percentage by weight of KClO4 in the
residue.

9. A mixture contains NaCl and an unknown chloride MCl


(i) 1 gm of this is dissolved in water. Excess of acidified AgNO3 solution is added to it. 2.567 g of a
white precipitate is formed.

ii) 1 gm of the original mixture is heated to 3000C. Some vapors came out which are absorbed in
acidified AgNO3 solution, 1.341g of a white precipitate is obtained. Find the mol.wt of unknown
chloride.

10. A metal, X forms a complex cynide of the formula K3[x(CN)6], which contains 17.77% of “X’ .
Deduce the at.wt. of the metal. What must be the percentage of “X” in the compound K3X(NO2)6.

11. A 1.85 g sample of a mixture of CuCl2+CuBr2 was dissolved in water and mixed thoroughly with
1.88 of AgCl. After the reaction the solid, a mixture of AgCl and AgBr was filtered washed and
dried. Its mass was found to be 2.052g.
What percentage by mass of original mixture is CuBr2

12. Chrome alum, K2SO4 Cr2(SO4)3. 24 H2O is prepared by passing SO2 gas through an aq. Solution of
K2Cr2O7 acidified with dilute H2SO4 till the reduction is complete and crystallizing out the alum. If
only 90% of the alum can be recovered from the process. How much alum can be prepared from
10kg of K2CrO7.

13. A solution in water of a mixture of KNO3 and K2SO4 (total wt=0.203 gm) was treated with metallic
mercury and Con.H2SO4. The conditions were such that the only oxide of nitrogen produced was
nitric oxide (0.0231g). What was the percentage of KNO 3 in the original mixture. It all the NO is
allowed to react with O2 to form NO2, how many moles of NO2 would be obtained.

14. A mixture of FeO and Fe3O4 when heated in air to constant weight gains 5% of its weight. Find the
composition of the initial mixture.

15. One gram of a green algae absorbs 4.7x10-3 moles of CO2 per hour by photosynthesis. If all the
carbon atoms of CO2 are converted into starch, how long will it take for the algae to increase its moss
by 100%.
16. Mono bromination of ethane followed by Wurtz reaction in presence of sodium forms 5.4 g of
butane. Find the weight of ethane required if the efficiency of mono bromination is 90% and Wurtz
reaction proceeds with 85% efficiency.

17. 5ml of a gaseous hydrocarbon was exposed to 30ml of O2. The resultant gas, on cooling is found to
measure 25ml of which 10ml are absorbed by NaOH and remainder by pyragallol. Determine the
M.F of hydrocarbon.

18. A sample of gaseous hydrocarbon occupying 1.12 lit of STP, when completely burnt in air, produced
2.2 gCO2 and 1.8 g H2O. Calculate the wt. of hydrocarbon taken and volume of O2 and STP required
for its combustion.

19. A mixture of H2 and C2H2 was collected in Eudiometer tube. Then 60ml of O 2 were also introduced.
The resulting mixture of all the gases was exploded. On cooling it was found to have undergone a
contraction. If 45 ml. on introducing
Caustic potash solution a further contraction of 32ml occurred and 13 ml of Oxygen alone was left

behind. Calculate percentage composition of mixture of hydrogen and acetylene.

20. An organic compound contains 69.4% C, 5.8% H. A sample of 0.303 g of this compound was
analysed for nitrogen by Kjel dahl method. The NH3 evolved was absorbed in 50 ml of 0.05M
H2SO4. The excess acid required 25 ml of 0.1 M NaOH for neutralisation. Determine the molecular
formula of the compound, if its mol. wt is 121.

21. 0.25g of an organic compound gave 31.1 ml of N2 by Duma’s method. Calculate the percentage of
“N” in this compound.

22. A monobasic organic compound gave on combustion the full percentage composition C=39.9%,
H=6.69%, also 0.2565 g of silver salt of acid gave on ignetion 0.1659 g of Ag. Calculate the mol.
Formula of acid.

2 When 150ml of 2M NaOH was added to 100ml of a H2SO4 solution, it required 43ml of 0.5M HCl
to neutralise the excess base. What was the molarity of H2SO4.

24. 1 gm of impure Na2CO3 is dissolved in water and the solution is made upto 250ml. To 50 ml of this
made up solution, 50 ml of 0.1 N HCl is added and the mixture after shaking well, required 10ml of
0.16 N NaOH solution for complete neutralisation. Calculate the percentage purity of Na2CO3
25. 2.36 g of sample of dolomite containing only CaCO3 and MgCO3 were dissolved in 700ml of 0.1N
HCl. The solution was diluted to 2.5 lit. 25ml of this solution required 200 ml of 0.01 N NaOH
solution for complete neutralization. Calculate the percentage composition of ore.

26. Determine the percentage BaO in a 10 g mixture of BaO and CaO which requires 100ml of 2.5 M
HCl to react with it completely.
27. The Iodide content of a solution was determined by titration with Ce(iv) sulphate in presence of HCl,
in which I – is converted to I Cl. A 250 ml sample of solution required 20ml of 0.05 N Ce+4
solution. What is the iodide concentration in the original solution in g/l

28. 1000 ml of oxygen at STP were passed through an ozonizer when the resulting volume was 888 ml at
STP. This quantity is passed through excess of KI solution. Calculate the wt of 2.5mg Iodine
liberated.
O3 + 2 KI + H2O → 2 KOH + I2 + O2.

29. A mixture consisting of only KOH and Ca(OH)2 is neutralized by acid. If it takes 0.1 equivalent to
neutralise 4.221 g of mixture. What is the initial composition of mixture in percentage by weight.

30. 0.5 g of fuming H2SO4 is diluted with water. The solution requires 26.7 ml of 0.4 N NaOH for
complete neutralization. Find the percentage of free SO3 in the sample of oleum.

31. A mixture of oxalic acid and NaHC2O4 was dissolved in water and the solution was made upto
one litre 10ml of the solution required 3ml of 0.1N NaOH solution for complete neutralisation. In
another exp 10 ml of same solution in hot dilute H2SO4 medium required 4 ml of 0.1 N KMnO4
solution for complete reaction.

Calculate the masses of H2C2O4 and NaHC2O4 in the reaction.

32. A solution of H2O2 labelled as ’20 vol’ was left open due to this some H2O2 decomposed and
volume strength of the solution decreased. To determine the new volume strength of H2O2 solution .
10 ml of the solution was taken and it was diluted to 100ml. 10 ml of this diluted solution was
titrated against 25ml of 0.0245 M KMnO4 solution under acidic conditions. Calculate volume
strength of H2O2 solution.

33. A polyvalent metal weighing 0.1 g and having at wt 51.0 reacted with dil H2SO4 to give 43.9
ml of H2 at STP. This solution containing the metal in lower oxidation state was found to required
58.8ml of 0.1 N permanganate for complete oxidation. What are the valencies of the metal.

34. A solution containing 2.68x10-3 mole of A +n ion requires 1.61x10-3 ml of MnO4 – for complete
oxidation of A +n to AO3- in acidic medium. What is value of ‘n’.

3 30 CC of a solution containing 9.15 g of a salt KxHy(C2O4)z. n H2O per litre required 27 CC of 0.12
N of NaOH for neutralization. The same quantity of solution was found to require 36 CC of 0.12 N
KMnO4 for complete oxidation. Calculate x, y, z and n.

36. A sample of Mg, containing same MgO as impurity was dissolved in 125 mL of 0.1 N H2SO4,
volume of H2 evolved at 27.30C and 1 atm was 120.1 mL . The
Resultant solution was found to be 0.02 N with respect to H2SO4 .
Calculate the ( I) weight of sample dissolved;
(ii) % by weight of Mg in the sample.
Neglect any change in volume of the solution.

37. A mixture of 20mL of CO, CH4, N2 was burnt in excess of O2 resulting in reduction of 13 mL of
volume. The residual gas was then treated with KOH solution to show a contraction of 14 mL in
volume of CO, CH4, N2 in mixture.

38. 20 mL of a mixture of CH4 and a gaseous compound of acetylene series were mixed with
100mL of O2 and exploded. The volume of the product after cooling to original room temperature
and pressure was 80 mL and on treatment with potash solution a further contraction of 40mL was
observed. Calculate the molecular formula of hydrocarbon and % composition of the mixture.

39. Sodium formate reacts with permanganate in neutral solution according to the equation.
HCOO + MnO4 + H2O à MnO2 + CO2 + OH
- - -

A 0.4680 g sample containing 30.1% HCOONa is treated with 50mL of 0.05 M MnO4- in
neutral solution, and the reaction is allowed to go to completion. The solution is filtered to remove
the MnO2 acidified with H2SO4 and titrated with 0.102 M oxalic acid. How many milliliters of
oxalic acid solution are required for titration.

40. On partly ozonising 100mL of oxygen, a 10mL decrease in volume resulted. The
product mixture was reacted with excess aqueous KI solution. Calculate the volume of ozone
produced. What volume of gas remains after reaction with KI?

41. The chloride of a metal has the formula MCl 3. 2.395 g of the chloride when dissolved
in water and treated with excess AgNO3 solution formed 5.168g of AgCl. Find the molar mass
of M.

42. 4.29 g of the barium salt of an acid was converted to the free acid by reaction with 21.64
mL of 0.954N H2SO4. The barium salt was known to contain 2 mol. water of hydration per mol
Ba2+ and the acid was known to be monoprotic. What is the molecular weight of the anhydrous
acid? Ba = 137.3 amu.

43. 10 mL of a gaseous organic compound containing Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen only was
mixed with 100mL of oxygen and exploded under conditions which allowed the water formed to
condense. The volume of the gas after explosion was 90mL. on treatment with potash solution a
further contraction in volume of 20mL was observed. Determine the molecular formula of the
compound if it’s vapor density is 23. All volume measurements are made at the same
temperature and pressure.

44. A 0.1576 g piece of iron wire was converted to ferrous ions and then titrated against 0.0164
M acidified potassium dichromate. Calculate the percentage purity of the iron wire is 27.3 mL of the
oxidant was needed for the titration.

45. 4.08g of a mixture of BaO and XCO3 was heated strongly. The residue weighed 3.64g. This
was dissolved in 100mL of Molar HCl. The excess acid required 16mL of 2.5M NaOH for
neutralization. Identify X.

46. An excess of acidified KI solution was added to 20mL of hydrogen peroxide solution and the
iodine liberated required 15mL of 0.4M sodium thiosulphate solution for titration. Calculate the
volume strength of the hydrogen peroxide solution.

47. To 0.3 g sample of KBrO 3, acid and excess KI was added and the iodine libeated
required 90 mL of 0.11 M thiosulphate of solution for titration. Calculate the percentage purity
of the bromate sample.

48. A 6 g sample contained Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and inert materials. It was treated with excess of aqueous
KI which reduced the iron to Fe . The resulting solution was
2+ diluted to 50mL and the liberated
iodine in a 10 mL aliquot was titrated with
5.5 mL of 1 M Na2S2O3. After the iodine from another 25mL sample was extracted, it
required 3.2 mL of 1 M MnO4 in H2SO solution to titrate the Fe
- 2+ present. Determine the
composition of the mixture.

49. A 10 g mix of Cu2S and CuS was treated with 200 mL of 0.75 M MnO4- in acid solution,
producing SO2, Cu and Mn . The sulphur dioxide was boiled off and

175 mL of 1 M Fe2+. Calculate the percentage of CuS in the mixture.

50. A sample of hydrazine sulphate (N2H6SO4) was dissolved in 100mL of water. 10mL
of this solution was reacted with excess of ferric chloride solution and warmed to complete the
reaction. Fe2+ ions formed was estimated and it required 20 mL of M/50 potassium permanganate
solution. Estimate the amount of hydrazine sulphate in l L of the solution (4 Fe3+ + N2H4 = N2 + 4
Fe2+ + 4H+)
51. A mixture containing sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and inert matter weighs 0.75 g. The
mixture was dissolved in water and titrated with 0.5 N HCl. The color of phenolphthalein
disappeared when 21 mL of the acid was added at which stage methyl-orange was added and 5 mL
more of the acid turned the solution orange in color. Fine % composition of the sample.

52. A solution contains Na2CO3 and NaHCO3, 10 mL of this solution required


2.5 mL of 0.1 M H2SO4 for neutralisation in a titration using phenolphathalein as the
indicator. Methyl orange was then added and a further 2.5 mL of 0.2 M H2SO4 was required for
attaining the end-point. Calculate the stengths of the solutes in solution.

53. A mixture of oxalic acid and sodium hydrogen oxalate weighing 2.02 g was dissolved in
water and the solution made upto one litre. 10.0 mL of the solution required 3.0 mL of 0.1 N
sodium hydroxide solution for complete neutralisation. In another experiment, 10.0 mL of the same
solution, in hot diulte sulphuric acid medium, required 4.0 mL of 0.1 N potassium permanganate
solution for complete reaction. Calclate the amounts of oxalic acid and sodium hydrogen
oxalate in the mixture.
