Understanding referring words
• Recognising referring words, and what they refer
to, is a key strategy because they are used so
frequently in speaking and writing. Speakers use
them to avoid repetition, but also to make what
they’re talking about clear to their listener. Students
will be familiar with pronouns, but the general use
of words like you and they could cause problems.
