2. What stage in the lifespan will you be preparing this ingredient?
_____Childhood_________/1

3. What are the specific nutritional concerns for this stage in the lifespan? /4
(Write the name of each nutrient and its function in the body in the chart below)

1. calcium is essential in helping to build a child's healthy bones and teeth. It's also important for blood clotting
and for nerve, muscle, and heart function.

2. iron helps move oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and helps muscles store and use oxygen

3. Vitamin C does more than just fighting off the common cold. It also holds the body's cells together,
strengthens the walls of blood vessels, helps the body heal wounds, and is important for building strong
bones and teeth.

4. Fiber helps produce bowel regularity in a child, by having bowel regularity the child is less prone to having
constipation. It can also play a role in reducing the chances of heart disease and cancer later in life.
4. What challenges or problems might the main ingredient you selected above present
to this stage of life? Consider at least two challenges. /2
The main challenge oats the main ingredients can cause in childhood is, Food
Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome it is a very rare but I does happen, the
symptoms, diarrhoea and vomiting but can easily be stopped by reducing the intake
of oats and having the body get used to oats. As rich as are are in other nutrints like
fiber, and iron they may lack the other nutrtional concerns for childhood, some that
could only be provided form other foods
Another thing is not something that is bad but it's the consumption of flavoured
packed oats which are high in fats and sugars, this should not be promoted in a
child’s diet the best way to introduce oats in the diet is to make them homemade
therefore you know how much of each extra ingredient is added.

5. Research a recipe which includes the main ingredient (or a good substitute) that

9. Suggest one way you could alter the recipe in the future to meet the nutritional
needs of another stage of the lifespan. In your answer, consider the name of the stage
in the lifespan, the nutritional needs of that stage of life, the function of the nutrient,
any new ingredient you have included, the preparation method or serving method you
will use.

Another stage of the lifespan where oats are a good choice of meeting nutritional
needs is the elderly stage of life. Oats offer many different vitamins and minerals and
with the right amount of ingredients that could be put in oatmeal it becomes the best
way of getting most of the nutrients you need in a meal. Some of the nutrients oats
offer are, manganese which promotes a stable and healthy metabolism, phosphorus
important for bone health and tissue maintenance, iron which makes hemoglobin, a
protein responsible for transporting oxygen to the red blood cells. All of these
nutrients are needed in an elderly person to have a healthy body. The preparation
method would be the exact same as how it would be for childhood. The only different
thing would be to add softer and easier ingredients to chew because it may be a little
hard for an old person.
