Writing Effective Conclusions

Guided Practice: Work with a partner. Read the sample writing task and introduction. Then, review the portion of the
concluding paragraph that has been provided for you. Finish the concluding paragraph by adding a final sentence using
the method of conclusion indicated.

Sample Writing Task: You have read articles about cheating in school. Write an essay in which you take a position on
whether or not students who cheat should be expelled.

Sample Introduction: Since the invention of tests, there has more than likely been cheating. Cheating just may be
human nature, but what price should cheaters pay for their actions? Some feel cheaters should simply be assigned a
failing grade, while others feel expulsion is appropriate. In order to control cheating, students who cheat must be
expelled. A zero-tolerance policy on cheating prepares students for the real world where actions have consequences,
and teaches the importance of integrity.

Conclusion: Overall, cheating is wrong. Adults who cheat in life pay fines, go to jail, and lose loved ones. Students need
to understand the serious implications of cheating. Expelling students makes it clear that cheating is not tolerated, and
it promotes academic integrity.
