NAME: ALKA DASH TOPIC: MY SOCIETY

I come from the land of Lord Jagannath i.e., the Odisan Society. To be particular, I was
born and brought up in Western Odisha i.e., Nuapada Dist. which is visualized as one of the
backward Society of Odisha. Most of the people have a norm of looking at this community
as uncivilized, illiterate, poor, and people who die out of starvation. Basically, my family
belongs to Eastern Odisha, So I can firmly say there lies a bitterness among these two
communities. Being exposed to both these societies, I would basically put forth a
comparison between these two areas.
No doubt the eastern part is developed and inhabited majorly by upper caste Brahmins
whereas, western Odisha belongs to the tribal communities or the 'Adivasis'. Most of the
primate cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Paradip are located in the eastern part, thus
providing better healthcare, education, administration, communication facilities as
compared to western Odisha.
Coming to Western Odisha I have seen the society evolving from a downtrodden place to a
developing one. In Nuapada which is a district headquarter, initially there were no English
medium schools for the children rather my primary school was the first English medium
school and I was the third student to enrol myself. There was no higher education facility
available in nearby areas too. Youngsters would travel hundreds of kilometers for their
quality higher education. But with time few colleges have been established and students are
willing to study and excel.
The healthcare facility has also developed but it still needs more attention. People travel to
other states or cities to avail quality healthcare services due to a lack of doctors and
equipment in the hospital. There are no private advanced hospitals. Just a Government
hospital which is not efficient to serve all the people is constructed with large buildings but
no equipment and doctors.
The status of women isn’t that discouraging from the beginning. Women work for their
livelihood and are more active than men. They work in agricultural fields, shops, houses,
construction, etc. While men are addicted to alcohol and waste all their money women take
care of family and believe in being independent.
The majority of the people are poverty-stricken and are daily labourers. Till date, child
labour can be seen in these areas who don’t have a passion for knowledge acquisition. They
believe in wages so that they can serve themselves and their family.
So this was a glimpse of my society which has a lot of space for development and way more
far from the ideal society.
