Reading and writing are important skills that you need to develop.

You need these skills to


become more productive in leaning all subjects. Proficiency in reading enables you to acquire a
market of ideas, while effective writing shares your opinions, thoughts, and feelings in printed
forms.
Reading enhances a variety of ideas among the learners and writing expresses what the authors
want to share to others. Hence, these two skills go hand in hand.
Francis Bacon once said, “Reading makes a full man.” It is needed true that an individual who is
enthusiastic or passionate in learning more must fill himself up with information and ideas from
printed materials. Fulfilment of this skill can be achieved when a learner feels ready to share his
thoughts and ideas in written form. On the other hand, the saying “Writers are not born, they are
made” explain that any learner can become a writer provided that he undergoes constant practice.
In this present time, you must show exceptional skills and have a creative mind to be able to
compete with your other counterparts. Mastery of language, which involves reading and writing,
is the key to global competiveness. These skills play significant roles in your life because they
help you to be well-equipped in any undertaking in the changing times.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to tell the importance of reading and
writing in day-day life, enhance their literary skills, determine their literary weaknesses
and find ways to improve them, and understand the significance of increasing the number
of materials they need.
Getting some information about your reading and writing abilities is a big factor to consider
when assessing your language skills. To assess your reading and writing skills, do the following
activity.

The world as we know it is changing very fast, and with it comes the evolution of language.
Language demands the knowledge of macro skills – listening, speaking, writing, and viewing
skills. You must keep in mind that all of these skills must be acquired simultaneously or all-
together. Although it is ideal to be equally knowledgeable in all of these macro-skills, some
learners are more proficient in one skill and weaker in another. However, proficiency in reading
and writing is a must for reading demands comprehension, while writing is an output which
springs from reading. They are interconnected and complementary in nature, so mastery of these
skills will help you succeed in your chosen field. With or without the use of technology, raw
outputs from reading materials through printed form can make a difference in your life.
Therefore, you must develop enthusiasm, eagerness and passion to enhance your language skills
and eventually master the English Language.
 Why you need to Master English1
English is a global language, oftentimes used as nations as the medium of instruction in
schools. In fact according to David Crystal, a British linguist, academic, and author,
“English is now the language which is most widely taught as foreign language in over 100
countries such as China, Russia, Germany, Spain, Egypt and Brazil. In most of these

displacing another language in the process.”
Aside from being primarily used in schools, English is also the language we revert or return to
when we communicate through correspondence which native speakers in a foreign setting.
Therefore, you must know how to use your reading ability to comprehend, and to later on apply
in writing what you have read.
