MUPPET MADNESS
A FULL SERIES HIGHLIGHTING THE MAGIC OF JIM HENSON’S ICONIC CREATIONS

MUPPETS™, MUSIC & MAGIC: JIM HENSON’S LEGACY

The Muppets and the Sesame Street residents are some of America’s most cherished cultural icons. Since the middle 1950s, Jim Henson’s lovable characters have been
charming young people and their overlords with education, music, and an often very wry sense of humor. Whether you identify with the trash-talking Oscar the Grouch,
the endlessly-excitable Kermit the Frog, the karate chopping egotist Miss Piggy, or the balcony hecklers Statler and Waldorf, there’s certainly a place deep in your heart for
these felt friends. To tide us over until the release of the new Muppet movie slated for November (from writer and star Jason Segel), we’re partnering with The Jim Henson
Legacy and Brooklyn Academy of Music to present a series of special Muppet-related programming. You’ll see some of the greatest moments of the 50+ year history of the
Muppets, rarely seen gems from the Sesame Street vaults, and even some experimental short films from Henson stepping out of the puppetry game. Make sure to check
out this great nostalgic program, and you’ll be surprised at how hilarious, innovative and, at times, subversive, the old Muppets are.
COMMERCIALS & EXPERIMENTS
MAR 29 & APR 6, RITZ, DIR. JIM HENSON, NR, 60 MIN
This program is a collection of experimental shorts, crazy commercials, and other rarities from the Henson vault. Highlights include: a legendary commercial and industrial
film for Wilson’s Meat that must be seen to believed, excerpts from Henson’s experimental television programs THE CUBE and YOUTH 68: EVERYTHING’S CHANGING...OR
MAYBE IT ISN’T, and TIME PIECE an 8-minute experimental masterpiece from 1965 that showcases Henson’s talent for making music out of everyday sounds. TIME PIECE
will be shown in an archival 35mm print!
JIM HENSON & FRIENDS: INSIDE THE SESAME STREET VAULT
APR 2, RITZ, DIR. VARIOUS, NR, 83 MIN
This super-entertaining program highlights the contributions of Jim Henson and his early SESAME STREET collaborators, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Fran Brill, and Caroll
Spinney. In addition to old favorites, there are some extremely rare clips from specials and guest appearances on other television programs.
SING! THE MUSIC OF SESAME STREET
APR 3, RITZ, DIR. VARIOUS, NR, 82 MIN
A joyous, sometimes hilarious and poignant salute to forty years of SESAME STREET music, featuring the original show classics, parodies, and special visits from some of
the music industry’s biggest names.
SESAME STREET AT 40: MILESTONES ON THE STREET
APR 9, RITZ, DIR. VARIOUS, NR, 81 MIN
This “best-of” compilation features dozens of classic moments in the forty-year history of the show, including excerpts from the first episode, celebrity guests, and some
of the best bits from Ernie and Bert, Big Bird, Snuffy, and the rest of the gang.

MUPPET FAIRYTALES: THE FROG PRINCE & THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER
APR 10, RITZ, DIR. JIM HENSON & DAVID GROSSMAN, NR, 70 MIN
A program of two classic Muppet fairy tales! In THE FROG PRINCE (Henson, 1971), the Muppets explore the age-old question: What happens when you kiss a frog? No one
can better tell that classic fairytale than Kermit and his friends. In THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER (Grossman, 1994), a wacky dilemma pops up: What if the elves that
come to the aid of the shoemaker are actually Elvises?

ROBERT DOWNEY SR. RETROSPECTIVE

COPRESENTED BY THE ALAMO, AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY AND ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES

DON’T ROCK THE BOAT...SINK IT: THE FILMS OF ROBERT DOWNEY SR.
“After being thrown out of the house, four schools and the United States Army, I discovered that I was on the right track.” – Robert Downey Sr.
Despite fathering Iron Man, Robert Downey Sr. is quite truly one of the most gifted, ambitious and fearlessly bizarre filmmakers to ever kick Hollywood in the teeth.
Everything from race relations to sex to acne medication have toppled before Downey’s decades-long one-man war against the universe. Now, with some of his most
powerful lost early work available for the first time, we can finally (re)discover one of the rarest no-brow geniuses in the history of American movies. Restored by
Anthology Film Archives, with funding provided by The Film Foundation, and looking better than ever in 35mm, the Alamo is proud to present these brand-new prints
alongside the recently recovered “lost” film MOMENT TO MOMENT.
PUTNEY SWOPE
APR 4, RITZ, DIR. ROBERT DOWNEY SR., 1969, R, 84 MIN, 35MM
Come to this incredibly rare 35mm screening (using quite possibly the only print in existence) of one of the legendary cinematic fuck-yous of its time. The film still delivers
a brazen, acidic portrait of the advertising business during the height of the counterculture era. Putney Swope, the only black exec in his firm, finds himself unexpectedly
elected its president due to a by-law mess-up, and turns the industry on its ear as his new Black Power-driven company churns out outrageous, taboo-breaking TV
commercials, which are strewn throughout the film like comedic landmines. Truth and Soul, Inc. becomes the most powerful ad company in the world, giving Downey a
chance to skewer across the political spectrum, as Swope rises from token black to the fascistic Generalissimo of Madison Avenue. Shot in a mix of black-and-white and
color, SWOPE plays out in a series of absurd vignettes perfectly sequenced for its original intoxicated audience. (The Cinefamily)
MOMENT TO MOMENT
APR 11, RITZ, DIR. ROBERT DOWNEY SR., 1975, NR, 85 MIN
Completely unseen since its initial release, also known as TWO TONS OF TURQUOISE TO TAOS TONIGHT (and even as JIVE), this is a movie like you’ve never, ever experienced.
Highly personal and at the same time completely illogical, this cacophonous comedy has virtually no semblance of a storyline or plot. The great Elsie Downey, the director’s
then-wife and the mother of his children (who are featured prominently throughout), drives the film with her boisterous performance in what may very well be more than
21 roles. Shot and edited piecemeal over a few years, MOMENT TO MOMENT is a collage of everything from staged scenes to backyard epics, and features a soundtrack by
the legendary Jack Nitzsche and David Sanborn. No matter what you call it, this film is surely Downey at his most avant-garde and aggressively absurd.
(Anthology Film Archives)
CHAFED ELBOWS
APR 18, RITZ, DIR. ROBERT DOWNEY SR., 1966, NR, 57 MIN, 35MM
Where to start? Hapless Walter Dinsmore undergoes his annual November breakdown at the 1954 World’s Fair, has a love affair with his mother, recollects his hysterectomy
operation, impersonates a cop, is sold as a piece of living art, goes to heaven and becomes the singer in a rock band. But not necessarily in that order. A manic comedy made
for a whopping $25,000, CHAFED ELBOWS was a commercial success that raised the flag of the underground film scene and elevated the good cause of bad taste. Downey
actually raised part of the money with an ad in the Village Voice that read: “Walk softly and carry a blank check.” An ingenious comedy with a rare visual sensibility, comic-
book playfulness and cheeky bad attitude, CHAFED ELBOWS is the best of all possible worlds.
NO MORE EXCUSES SCREENING WITH CHAFED ELBOWS
APR 18, RITZ, DIR. ROBERT DOWNEY SR., 1968, 44 MIN, 35MM
Perhaps the rowdiest of Downey’s early films (which is saying a lot), the truly incomparable NO MORE EXCUSES interweaves five short scenarios into one raucous
amalgamation. A dazed Yankee civil war soldier (played by Downey himself) mysteriously awakens in early ‘60s NYC where, naturally, he heads to Yankee Stadium. Alan
Abel, Director of the Society for Indecency to Naked Animals (SINA), speaks from the heart of his group’s moral crusade to clothe all animals. Charles J. Guiteau repeatedly
bungles his assassination attempts on President James Garfield. A priestly pervert and a chimp (yes, a chimp) engage with a plus-sized lover; and, in what just might
be the most disorienting scenes, Downey visits the seriously swinging singles scene that is the original T.G.I. Friday’s on the Upper East Side. As unpredictable as it is
unhinged, NO MORE EXCUSES is downright funny, and art brut to the max. (Anthology Film Archives)

PHIL OCHS: THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE

MAR 2, RITZ, DIR. KENNETH BOWSER, 2011, NR, 96 MIN
A timely tribute to an unlikely American hero. Phil Ochs, a folk singing legend, who many called “the emotional heart of his generation,” loved his country and he pursued
its honor, in song and action, with a ferocity that had no regard for consequences. Wielding only a battered guitar, a clear voice and a quiver of razor sharp songs, he
tirelessly fought the “good fight” for peace and justice throughout his short life. Phil Ochs rose to fame in the early 1960’s during the height of the folk and protest song
movement. By the time of his untimely death in 1976 at age 35, his recorded legacy was secure and the FBI had a dossier on him that was over 400 pages long. Weaving
together photos, film clips, historic live performances and interviews with an array of people influenced by Ochs; from Sean Penn to Pete Seeger, Joan Baez to Tom Hayden,
PHIL OCHS: THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE paints a very different picture. We are able to understand that Ochs’ lasting legacy in both music and politics ultimately mirrored the
complexities and contradictions of the country he loved -- and his life, sadly, reflects the arc of the times in which he lived.

AGFA INSPECTION SERIES

MAR 6, 20 & APR 3, LAMAR, 35MM, FREE!
The American Genre Film Archive was established to preserve and make available films from the classic drive-in and exploitation era. Part of this duty involves cleaning
and inspecting the prints. There are two ways to do this: either by painstakingly examining the film splice by splice on a build table, or by actually running the film. So
we’re providing AGFA the latter option. And since all of us have a stake in this, we’re inviting you if you care to be a part of the process. The titles are secret, the showtimes
aren’t the most accessible, but it’s free if you care to attend. Expect to see some pretty special treasures from the vault. (Lars)

SXSW PRESENTS: MARS

MAR 79, RITZ, DIR. GEOFF MARSLETT, 2010, NR, 90 MIN
From Austin-based director Geoff Marslett and starring Mark Duplass, Zoe Simpson, Paul Gordon, Cynthia Watros, and Mike Dolan comes this SXSW favorite. MARS follows
three astronauts on the first manned mission to our galactic neighbor. On the way they experience life-threatening accidents, self-doubt, obnoxious reporters, and the
boredom of extended space travel. This romantic comedy is told in the playful style of a graphic novel - using a unique animation process that director Geoff Marslett
developed specifically for the film. Underneath the silliness, MARS is also an exploration of exploration. Why do we want to know what is out there? How do we react to
what we find? Is it really that important? And where does love fit into the whole thing?

GIRLIE NIGHT: CLUELESS

MAR 22 & 29, RITZ & VILLAGE, DIR. AMY HECKERLING, 1995, PG13, 97 MIN, 35MM
You guys, this movie is, like, a cinematic masterpiece of the late 1990s. It spawned fashion trends, countless slang terms (AS IF!) and gave Alicia Silverstone a reason
to exist beyond Aerosmith videos. CLUELESS is my all time favorite high school film, and I still quote it incessantly, especially while driving (because I totally pause at
stop signs). Before reinventing Jane Austen became cliché, Her Royal Genius Amy Heckerling adapted the classic story of Emma into a hilarious, insanely clever satire of
adolescence in Beverly Hills. Even more brilliantly, she took caricatures like Cher and Dionne and developed them into girls I would die to exchange BFF charms with, and
not just because they’d take me on shopping sprees. No offense to Tai (RIP Brittany Murphy!), but I would make a much better candidate for a friend make-over, especially
because I wouldn’t try to make moves on super cutie Josh. Ha ha, ok, that’s a lie, I totally would. I am majorly, totally, butt-crazy in love with Josh!
Thank goodness Girlie Night is giving us the chance to pretend, just for one evening, like we’re Class of ‘96 at Beverly Hills High. We’ll play matchmaker for sweet old
teachers, roll with our homies and thank an LA city bus driver for taking a chance on an unknown kid. You don’t want to miss it, so be sure to make time in your busy pants
dropping schedule! (Sarah Pitre)

CELLULOID HANDBAG:
CABARET W/ REBECCA HAVEMEYER
MAR 23, RITZ, DIR. BOB FOSSE, 1972, PG, 124 MIN, 35MM
Liza Minnelli! Liza Minnelli! Liza Minnelli! Say it three times and slap ya’ mama HARD, ladies
and gentlemen! With tha’ month startin off with a visit from ol’ Liza at tha’ Long Center,
followed by SXSW tearin a stank hole into tha’ town, ol’ REBECCA HAVEMEYER figured it best
ta’ merge the two forces into a nightcap fit for the biggest of Queens! CELLULOID HANDBAG
is bringin’ ya the dank dirty underground of 1930’s Berlin via a wild and loose-singin tramp
and a bisexual blond with lips ta’ kill! Come on down and take a seat with Sally Bowles for
the hot time screenin’ of Bob Fosse’s money money money makin’ …CABARET! It’ll be one of
tha’ best joyrides you’ll take after this whirlwind of a month! (Rebecca Havemeyer)

TROLL 2
MAR 25, APR 1, 8, 15, VILLAGE, DIR. CLAUDIO FRAGASSO, 1990, PG13, 90 MIN, 35MM
Join young whiner Joshua and his family on a dark journey into the heart of Nilbog, a mysterious township of cannibalistic vegetarians (??) who may or may not be hiding
a more vicious supernatural secret. Okay. Yes. They are. See, a spazzed-up witch is leading a bevy of shrimpy goblins on a crusade of magical misanthropic eradication,
using chunky milk as a weapon against mankind. Only Joshua and his invisible dead grandpa are aware of the danger, which the boy attempts to curb in one scene by
urinating on the dinner table. Local sheriff Gene Freak isn’t any help, as he’s too busy offering the most bizarre drunk-uncle performance you’ll ever see on screen. And he’s
not alone...literally every actor involved is their own unique breed of human, lending an already fascinatingly crippled film a whole new level of self-destructive force.
TROLL 2’s sub-possible crud factor is so powerful that it reigned for years as IMDB’s lousiest movie of all time, beating out staid gutterbombs like PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE
to take its rightful place as Supreme Emperor of Shit Mountain!!

FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL 2011

MAR 30, RITZ
For years, FOUND FOOTAGE curators Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher have sifted through garage sales,
thrift stores, and even dumpsters mining for bona fide VHS tape gold. And friends, they have struck
paydirt time and again. We’re excited to welcome them back to Austin for a one-night only showcase
of their latest and greatest finds (plus a few longtime favorites too). From the curiously-produced
industrial training video to the forsaken home movie donated to Goodwill, witness the resurrection
of these forgotten treasures served up with Pickett and Prueher’s informative (and damn funny)
observations and commentary.

GIRLIE NIGHT: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

APR 12 & 19, RITZ, DIR. JOE WRIGHT, 2005, PG, 129 MIN, 35MM???
Two words: Mr. Darcy. Seriously, this description should just end there because WHAT MORE DO YOU
NEED? What more does ANY woman need than the brooding, handsome, totally swoon-worthy
Mr. Darcy? Ok, well, Pemberly doesn’t hurt. Nor do all of the fancy balls and gorgeous dresses and
romantic intrigue and GAH I want to hate Elizabeth Bennet for being such a lucky bitch but I can’t.
She’s too awesome. Now, you may be one of those Austen purists who will only watch the BBC
version with Colin Firth (which is, admittedly, a masterpiece). If so, I feel the need to point out that
hello, did you miss the POINT of the story? It’s not good to be prideful OR prejudiced! Give this 2005
version a chance, and within minutes you’ll be enchanted by the new interpretation of the characters
(although Keira is still way too skinny) and even the non-Colin Firth Mr. Darcy (not, it turns out, an
oxymoron!). Oh you guys, I’m getting so excited just writing about it! Like when they almost kiss in
the rain and when Judi Dench shows up and Lizzy realizes she still has a chance and OMG! I can’t wait
for Girlie Night so we can all swoon together! (Sarah Pitre)

ECHOTONE
APR 2427, RITZ, DIR. NATHAN CHRIST, 2010, NR, 90 MIN
Internationally known as “The Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin’s music
culture has led it to become one of the world’s most sought-after destinations.
As nearly two dozen high-rises pop up throughout the city amidst economic
downfall, how does the working musician get along? Directed by Nathan Christ
and photographed by Robert Garza, ECHOTONE is a cultural portrait of the
modern American city examined through the lyrics and lens of its creative class.
There is rising star soul revivalist Black Joe Lewis selling out concert halls by
night and delivering fish by day. There’s Cari Palazzolo of synth pop sensation
Belaire, poised for commercial success, but conflicted over the thought of her
music turning into a commodity. Then there is experimental troubadour Bill
Baird, whose band Sound Team enjoyed a major label deal with Capitol Records
and was subsequently dropped after one album. Interweaving the tales of
these young artists to form a mosaic illustrating the universal struggle many
contemporary fringe cultures are experiencing, ECHOTONE is a modern parable
on integrity set against the back drop of a global economic, political, and
cultural paradigm shift.

BROUGHT TO YOU IN PART BY END OF AN EAR RECORDS AND ROOM SERVICE VINTAGE!

THE CLASH: RUDE BOY

MAR 7, RITZ, DIRS. JACK HAZAN & DAVID MINGAY,
1980, R, 133 MIN, 35MM
RARE 35MM SCREENING! The UK’s most legendary non-manufactured punk quartet star in this realistic
blue collar study of a young punk’s daily life. Ray (Ray Gange) is an employee at the local porn shop.
After work, he pops into a club for a Clash performance. He spends a good deal of time with the band
over the following days, joining them sidestage for a set in front of a massive outdoor crowd at an anti-
Front rally. He’s hired to roadie for a series of Clash shows north of London. The rigors include backstage
fisticuffs with venue security and hotel room trysts climaxing with actual vomit, plus a great deal of
concert footage thrown into the mix. The Clash’s rise to prominence seems laid out as a contrast to the
increasing aimlessness and failures of the film’s unsympathetic protagonist. For fans of the group, it’s a
particularly satisfying barrage of material from an era where the band was at their strongest.

LET’S LISTEN TO SOME RECORDS!

MAR 21, RITZ
Here’s a novel premise. At this show, we have a couple of knowledgeable record collectors sit together onstage with a turntable and their record crates. They will spin
tracks and talk about music together. It’s like a master class in deep tracks and rare dusty grooves. For the first installment of this new show we will be joined by Blake
Carlisle of End Of An Ear records and another very special guest to be announced. We’ll have the turntable wired into the theater speakers and tuned up just right. If you
love discovering rare tracks you’ll want to be there - and take notes!

MUPPET MUSIC MOMENTS

MAR 28, RITZ, DIR. VARIOUS, NR, 77 MIN
Music was always an integral part of THE MUPPET SHOW, and the Jim Henson Legacy has
assembled a collection of some of the classic music numbers interpreted as only the Muppets
can. This compilation features a wide range of musical genres, including performances by
guest stars Harry Belafonte, Elton John, and Linda Ronstadt. This is part of the Muppets™,
Music & Magic: Jim Henson’s Legacy series. Check out the rest of the series on p16.

SERGE GAINSBOURG B’DAY TRIBUTE

APR 4, RITZ, DIR. VARIOUS
Serge Gainsbourg would have been 83 years old this April, not that any such thing was likely or even possible. He suffered (?)
from most of the fatal addictions of our time - booze, cigarettes, love, music. It’s astonishing that this slouched, unshaven,
bleary-eyed shell of a man lived to be 62 - but his music still sounds as young as love itself. Not the love of la-la-la pop music,
but the love that farts, that cheats, that makes you feel 10 feet tall one minute and like a squashed rat the next. His peculiar
genius and attitude is anathema to many Americans probably, but that doesn’t make us like him any less. This special show
features a newly compiled selection of Serge Gainsbourg promo clips, live performances and interviews, culminating with
the earth-shakingly spectacular full length video of his masterpiece “Melody Nelson” in gorgeous quality. We’ll have it
turned up pretty loud so if you don’t like chain-smoking, sneering, lecherous Frenchmen stay home, watch FAMILY GUY and
leave us ALONE. (Lars)

TEEN AGOGO W/ THE UGLY BEATS LIVE!
APR 11, RITZ, DIR. MELISSA KIRKENDALL, 2010, 92 MIN
Every meaningful change in rock music started with some teenagers, alone in
their parents’ garage, banging away at three chords. This rampaging doc features
original recordings, never-before-seen Super 8 movies, rare archival footage,
photographs and interviews with musicians, fans and industry experts on early
rock & roll. TEEN A-GO-GO takes the viewer on an entertaining, nostalgic ride into
the teen scenes of the mid-’60s and into the lives of the people who lived it. The
British Invasion played an undeniable role on this uniquely American musical
genre when on February 9, 1964 the Beatles premiered live on the Ed Sullivan
Show. An estimated 73 million viewers (over 40% of the entire U.S. population)
tuned in. Teens all across America were glued to their TV sets as they witnessed
a true turning point in rock history. On February 10, 1964, it would seem that
10 million teens had something new to do. With their jaws still on the floor and
inspiration stirring within, thousands of youngsters knew that their destiny lay in
rock & roll and the A Go-Go Teen Scene was born.

VELVET GOLDMINE
APR 18 & 25, RITZ, DIR. TODD HAYNES, 1998, R, 124 MIN,
35MM
Witness the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust... er, sort of. In director Todd Haynes’s
ode to the glam era, Christian Bale plays Arthur Stuart, a Brit reporter in 1984 New
York begrudgingly tasked by his editor to do a “Where are they Now” piece on Brian
Slade, a glittery, androgynous Bowie-esque glam superstar. Slade dominated the
charts in 1974, only to mysteriously disappear from the limelight completely after
staging his own on-stage “assassination.” Through flashbacks to his own turbulent
adolescent days as a glam fanboy and interviews with those who knew Slade,
Arthur pieces together some of the mystery of who Slade was and what he might
be up to now. Much like his more critically and commercially successful homage to
Dylan, 2007’s I’M NOT THERE, Haynes masterfully blurs fact and legend, people and
personas, into one fantastic cinematic mash. Sure, the history is dubious (Bowie
certainly thought so and sadly refused to let his music be used), but that’s totally
beside the point: his vision of the era is so completely captivating it’s bound to
leave a little glitter on your collar.

BRAIN DAMAGE
MAR 1, RITZ, DIR. FRANK HENENLOTTER, 1988, NR, 84 MIN, 35MM
From the writer/director of BASKET CASE comes this brilliant parable about the dangers of addiction, whether your given indulgence be drugs, alcohol or -- in this case
-- a smooth-talking, turd-shaped brain parasite. Said mind-sucker is an ancient creature named Aylmer, a happy-go-lucky gnarled wormbone with a soothing voice and
a fever for the flavor of gray matter. Aylmer latches onto clean-cut teen Brian, steering his host into a world of hallucinogenic pleasure while the dazed, stumbling Brian
inadvertently offers the creature passing victims for human ingestion. By the time their unhealthy relationship reaches its breaking point, countless scoured-skulled
corpses will litter the streets of New York, Brian will be lethally hooked on toxic worm-juice and the audience will see a very naked muscle man take an unnecessarily long
shower. Come for the violence, stay for the nudity, puke when you see a guy tug his entire brain out of his own earhole. (Zack)

SOLE SURVIVOR
MAR 8, RITZ, DIR. THOM EBERHARDT, 1983, R, 85 MIN, 35MM
Hard-nosed TV producer Denise (Anita Skinner) miraculously survives a brutal plane crash while everyone else on
board is reduced to squirty lunchmeat. Once she recovers, all attempts to resume her daily life are curtailed by
driverless vehicle accidents, psychic nightmares and several walking corpses who clearly want her to join their ranks.
The longer she survives, the more severe the supernatural assault, until everyone in Denise’s proximity ends up on
the Grim Reaper’s shitlist. The film could have been played as a standard ghost story, but instead establishes a wide
array of innovative horror concepts and deeply effective imagery, all tied together by outstanding performances
from Skinner and the rest of the cast. It’s painfully obvious that this film was the plagiarized inspiration for the entire
FINAL DESTINATION franchise. The only difference is that SOLE SURVIVOR is atmospheric, intelligent and...what’s that
word...good. (Zack)

HOWLING III: THE MARSUPIALS

MAR 22, RITZ, DIR. PHILIPPE MORA, 1987, PG13, 95 MIN, 35MM
This entry exists in its own continuity, but anyone who’s seen HOWLING II already understands that director
Mora attacked the werewolf genre like a rabid Neanderthal leaping into spinning helicopter blades. Here, he
introduces us to an entire new species of manimals, hidden in the outback in search of safe haven in the shadows
of encroaching civilization. One makes her way into the city and falls in love with a human, igniting a trans-
species explosion of vivisection, throat-devouring and unprecedented quasi-comedic insanity. Experiencing
HOWLING III is like watching the other six installments on simultaneous fast-forward while eating sugar cubes
and chugging vinegar. Easily the most wack-assed lycanthropic hoedown in horror history, the logic behind
this Australian take on feral shapeshifting makes the prison rantings of Charles Manson sound like a goddamn
presidential address. For this very special screening, we’re going to great expense to fly the only known 35mm

MIDNIGHT EXPLOITATION CLASSICS EVERY WEDNESDAY AT THE RITZ ONLY $1

Since 2001, we’ve been hosting a weekly program of exploitation classics. From Cheerleaders Gone Bad to Blaxploitation to ‘70s Action Cheese
and even to Women In Prison, it’s all there - scratches, splices and all. Many of these films are so obscure that little is known or has been written
about them. Some of them are bad, most of them are enjoyable, and a rare few are mind-blowingly amazing. Weird Wednesdays is the vanguard of
cinema exploration in Austin. Escape the crushing lameness of the real world with us every week. For only a dollar! - Lars Nilsen, Weird Wednesday

Wednesdays!”
Total madness! This is an exceedingly odd rural snake-revenge movie that’s oh so much more.
A seemingly harmless old kook named Snakey (Les Tremayne) operates a reptile farm on the
outskirts of a small town. As usual in movies of this type, he is pushed over the edge by a
series of outrages and he kills off half the town with his snakes. Sounds commonplace, but it’s
not. What makes SNAKES extra special is all the perverse little sick touches. For example, the
prim local schoolmarm uses Snakey as a reptile pimp for her sick sex thrills, the brother and
sister grocers seem to have an incestuous relationship, Snakey likes to strip his victims down
to their underwear and best of all, John Philip Sousa marches blare throughout the movie
like some sort of demented leitmotif. But the thing that pushes this into heaven territory is
Snakey’s habit of ranting about Wednesday. It seems that Snakey’s favorite day is Wednesday
and if you mess with Snakey, it had better be on one of the other six days of the week. See it
for yourself if you don’t believe me. It’s incredible! (Lars)

TROUBLE MAN
MAR 9, RITZ, DIR. IVAN DIXON, 1972, R, 99 MIN, 35MM
This is a superlative blaxploitation film. Most of the black action films of this era were either low-budget wonders with a lot of heart or bloodless studio efforts dressed
up with a little velour and chrome. TROUBLE MAN combines the professional polish of the latter with the solid legitimacy of the former. The brilliant stage actor Robert
Hooks plays Mr. T, a sort of black godfather who holds court in his pool hall as a combination President, Pope and Chief Fixer. Though blessed with looks, intelligence and
tremendous wealth, his most notable feature is his supernatural coolness. When something needs to get done--say, a slumlord needs to be chastened, or a sum of money
recovered, or a double-crossing chump slaughtered in his penthouse--T gets it done without raising an eyebrow. Director Ivan Dixon, like Hooks, had been a color-line
breaking pioneer in the theater, film and television, and his style is as sharp and clean as the crease in T’s slacks. With Paul Winfield, Julius Harris and Ralph Waite. The
soundtrack by Marvin Gaye is a work of absolute, undeniable genius. (Lars)

MASTER PANCAKE THEATER

AUSTIN’S MOVIE MOCKING MAESTROS

CHOOSE YOUR OWN PANCAKE X

MAR 28, LAMAR
Once again, it’s time for CHOOSE YOUR OWN PANCAKE night where you, the viewer, get to pick a movie for Master Pancake Theater to mock, and then we do it right there
on the spot! Here’s how it works: just bring the DVD of your choice, we’ll narrow it down to our top favorites, then the audience will vote on which of those they want to
see. Be prepared to give a short speech in defense of your movie. The audience has final say and must be convinced. Previous winners include: WHITE COMANCHE, Roger
Corman’s FANTASTIC FOUR, LOGAN’S RUN, TOTAL RECALL, BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, LEFT BEHIND, and THE ISLAND! What will be the pick this time around? Whatever it is,
it’s up to you!
TWISTER
COMING APRIL, RITZ & VILLAGE, DIR. JAN DE BONT, 1996
Just in time for the start of tornado season, Master Pancake mocks the biggest tornado movie since THE WIZARD OF OZ! TWISTER (1996) features Bill Paxton and Helen
Hunt as honest, hard-working weather nerds, and Carey Elwes as their rival: an evil storm-chaser who’s only in it for all the glamour and money normally associated with
the world of tornado tracking. Also featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman in perhaps his most annoying role, as stoner weather-humper Dustin “Dusty” Davis, a wise-cracking
member of Helen Hunt’s storm team. But the real stars of this movie are the cows. Come see them moo and writhe in agony all over again as Master Pancake dopples your
pleasure by taking the wind out of TWISTER. With special guest mocker Martha Kelly.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
STARTS APRIL 22, RITZ, DIR. ROBERT WISE, 1965
The hills are alive with the sound of laughter as Master Pancake takes on this beloved 1965 classic. Come see us mock the film that New Yorker critic Pauline Kael called
“the sugar-coated lie people seem to want to eat.” Featuring Julie Andrews as Maria, an aspiring nun who can’t say no to fun. When Maria is enlisted by Captain von Trapp
to supervise his kids, chaos ensues, until she figures out how to win their hearts AND take on the Nazi oppressors, thus becoming SUPERNANNY: AUSTRIA. Sugar coated
lie? Or the best movie musical about prospective nuns fighting Nazis ever! You decide this April as we mock the hell out of it. With special guest mocker Mary Jo Pehl of

AIGA PRESENTS HANDMADE NATION

MAR 6, RITZ, DIR. FAYTHE LEVINE, 2009, 90 MIN
This film documents the new wave of art, craft and design that is capturing the attention of the nation. Filmmaker Levine traveled to 15 cities and covered more than
19,000 miles to interview artists, crafters, makers, curators and community members. Today’s craft world has emerged as a synthesis of historical technique, punk culture,
and the DIY ethos, also influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art. Levine captured the tightly knit community that exists through
websites, blogs, and online stores that connect to the greater public through independent boutiques, galleries and craft fairs. Interviews were conducted on location in
artist studios, homes, boutiques, offices and craft fairs, giving the public an exclusive and rarely seen look into the lives of these creative individuals.

MARJORIE BAUMGARTEN
MAR 27, RITZ, DIR. NICHOLAS RAY, 1956, NR, 95 MIN, 35MM
At every Cinema Club screening, we are joined by a guest expert who introduces the film and then joins Alamo programmers in an onstage discussion after the movie.
This month the guest is the Austin Chronicle’s Film Editor and senior reviewer Marjorie Baumgarten.
BIGGER THAN LIFE is one of Nicholas Ray’s very best films. James Mason plays a school teacher, in serious pain from a rare disease, who submits to an experimental drug
regimen that changes his personality wildly. In the midst of one of those perfect ‘50s families, he descends into full-blown monomania. It’s a stunning film and Mason’s
slide into madness is downright biblical. Nicholas Ray’s films are frequently perverse and romantic. He was at severe odds with the hyperconformity of the 1950s and his
movies reflect it. Another Ray hallmark is exceptional performances. We think of James Dean in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, Mercedes McCambridge in JOHNNY GUITAR and
many others. James Mason’s performance here is worthy of those. Join us as we explode the ‘50s suburban tract house lifestyle with Nicholas Ray and Marjorie
Baumgarten.

CINEMA CLUB: RED RIVER

APR 17, RITZ, DIR. HOWARD HAWKS, 1948, NR, 133 MIN, 35MM
Cinema Club is an interactive series that highlights the sophisticated appreciation and discussion of classic films from cinema history. At each screening a prominent
expert will introduce an essential film classic. Following the film, the speaker and members of our programming team will lead a discussion of the film, offering insight
into the film’s production, history, and artistic qualities. This month our guest will be Don Graham, University Of Texas Professor of English and author of “Cowboys And
Cadillacs: How Hollywood Looks At Texas” and the new book “State Of Minds: Texas Culture and Its Discontents”, which will be available for sale after the show.
Though RED RIVER was Howard Hawks’ first western, it rides easy in the saddle as one of the great American classics. No less an eminence than John Ford, when erroneously
credited with RED RIVER by a fan, responded, “Thank you very much.” As a drama it has real heft, the scale is as vast as the cattle country and the conflict between father
(John Wayne, never better) and son (Montgomery Clift) is primal. Along the way there is also lightness and humor (which thankfully is not so Fordian) as well as the most
beautiful and iconic cattle drive scenery ever captured. (Lars)

BIG SCREEN CLASSICS: PAN’S LABYRINTH
APR 19 & 20, RITZ, DIR. GUILLERMO DEL TORO, 2006, R, 119
MIN, 35MM
Guillermo del Toro’s masterwork is a fanciful and chilling story set against the
backdrop of a fascist regime in 1944 rural Spain. The film centers on Ofelia, a lonely
and dreamy child living with her mother and adoptive father, a military officer tasked
with ridding the area of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with
fantastical creatures and secret destinies. With post-war repression at its height,
Ofelia must come to terms with her world through a fable of her own creation.
“The film is a masterpiece...Del Toro at his best on all levels. His script is the best
writing he’s ever done, the direction is sharp, imaginative, but not showy. The actors
are all directed perfectly. Each performance is nuanced and different than every other

Before computers took over the universe, longtime collaborators (and Muppet-makers) Henson

an ‘80s audience’s eyeballs. In an unnamed land, a pair of young, elf-like Gelflings must battle the
evil Skeksis to bring their world back to the power it once held. Though this may sound like fantasy
silliness, the sheer power and ingenuity of THE DARK CRYSTAL is unmatched. It’s a pure-hearted,
imagination-powered journey into unexplored ideas, with the most memorable characters this side
of another dimension. From the graceful Land-Striders to the looming crab-like Garthim to that wily,
one-eyed heroic priestess Aulghra, the colorful creatures create an entirely unique experience at the

Born just a few stable doors down from Jesus, Brian’s life has a similar though slightly less

STRANGE BREW
APR 14, DOWNTOWN

THE OFFCENTERED FILM FESTIVAL

PRESENTED BY DOGFISH HEAD CRAFT BREWERY AND THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE

We’ve been celebrating off-centered films with off-centered ales with our friends at the Dogfish Head Brewery for a few years now, but this
year we’re making it bigger than ever with events spread across multiple Alamos and a special Rolling Roadshow event downtown. It’s three
days of beer-loving fun that’s guaranteed to make you forget about all the worries of tax day.
STRANGE BREW BEER PARTY
APR 14, DOWNTOWN AUSTIN, SUNSET
We’re sending out an invitation to all of our fair city’s local brewers to join us downtown for a special outdoor screening of STRANGE BREW featuring a Q&A with Dogfish
head CEO Sam Calagione and a conversation with Austin’s brewers. Come out and sample craft brews from a wide selection of what Austin beer has to offer, compare it to
some Dogfish Head, and enjoy Bob and Doug MacKenzie as they take off to the Great White North. It’s a beauty way to go.
THE DOGFISH HEAD BEER FEAST
FEATURING BUSTER KEATON’S “WHAT? NO BEER!” AND THE THREE STOOGES’ “BEER BARREL POLE CATS”
APR 15, RITZ, VARIOUS DIRECTORS, 95 MIN,
Sam’s team will select a group of their finest and most rare ales, and using them as a guide for the flavor profile the Alamo’s own executive chef John Bullington will create
a multi-course feast of delicious delights to pair with the beer. Sam and John will discuss the process of brewing each batch and the nuances that went into each course of
the meal, and we’ll all enjoy classic beer-themed comedy along with some outtakes from the Discovery Channel’s BREW MASTERS.
WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER
WITH KEN MARINO & JOE LO TRUGLIO LIVE IN PERSON!
APR 15, RITZ, DIR. DAVID WAIN, 97 MIN, 35MM
It must have been the coolest dorm room in the history of college... For a short while during their
formative years spent in higher education, comedy legends Ken Marino and Joe Lo Truglio were
roommates with the man who would grow up to found Dogfish Head, Sam Calagione. With a future
master brewer and soon-to-be stars of MTV’s THE STATE living under one roof, we can only imagine the
hijinks they got up to. Tonight, however, they will share the stage at the Alamo for the first time as they
introduce WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER followed by a Q&A where we can get to know more about the
movie or just hope that they’ve had enough lubrication from the feast before it to start telling personal
stories from their halcyon days.

THE OFFCENTERED SHORT FILM CONTEST

APR 16, LAKE CREEK, DIR. YOU
From Dogfish Head: “The OCFF (Off-centered Film Fest) features ‘off-centered films for off-centered people’! We heartily believe in the DIY-grassroots-david-beats-goliath
approach. And now we want to give independent-minded, aspiring filmmakers the chance to let their own freak-flags fly by making their own films that celebrate the
perseverance of the underdog! We want to incorporate as many different, individual, vignettes of the ‘little engines that could’ into the world of Dogfish Head and we want
to celebrate filmmakers whose visions jibe with our own. In addition to the copious booty we will lay on first-through-third place annual winners, we will show many of
the competition submissions online and in our pubs and breweries as well. Our goal is to build a short film competition that is as far from the mainstream as our 90-Minute
I.P.A. is from mainstream beer. So what are you waiting for? Crack open a cold one, pour it into a nice snifter, and let it come up to cellar temperature while you storyboard.
Sip. Brainstorm. Sip again. Write dialogue. Sip again. Cast. Sip. Make that film. Good luck. Cheers.”
We’ll screen all of the favorites on the last night of the festival and Sam, Ken and Joe will serve as the final judges and award prizes.
