Rationale

Effective teaching and learning is one of the greatest challenges schools are facing in this time
of pandemic. This Module is a great help for students to learn the lessons even when outside the school
premises. This is a powerful tool in helping students learn according of their own pacing. This also
helps teachers in presenting the course materials in an easy way.
This is intended for students taking GE3 (The Contemporary World). This aims to develop
a coherence and explicit academic content within the course objectives. The said objectives must be
realized within a specific time allotment.
Students has to read and answer activities from this guide while they are on offline class.
This module contains four lessons. Each lesson contains parts as reflected in the learning plan.
They are as follows:
1. TRY THIS OUT!
This is a pre-assessment activity for schema activation. This activity engages the
learners with significant ideas and encourages them to connect their prior knowledge
to what they are about to learn

2. FIGURE THIS OUT!

General knowledge and information of the lesson topic will be discussed here. This
serves as the content part.

3. SEARCH IT OUT!
This serves as a group oriented feature that contextualizes the lesson topic. This activity
supplements the content part of the lesson.

4. THINK IT OVER!
This includes HOTS questions about the topic. This serves as the abstraction part which
will be answered individually by the learner through the use of graphic organizers and
the like.

Lesson No. 1

The Task of Defining Globalization

Objective/s:

1. Recognize what is globalization and its activities.

2. Give opinions on the different definition of globalization.

Try this Out:

Below are logos of companies that you may know. Can you name the company of the
logos?

Figure This Out:

Globalization is a term used in the 20th century that refers to the process of trading goods
among nations. It is described by the interaction, integration, and exchange among the people,
companies, and governments all over the world. The good exchanges include:

 Services
 Technology
 Investments
 Information

GE3 Page 2 of 20
The Contemporary World

Here are various definitions of globalization according to some authorities:

 (Bauman, 2003) Globalization is “most important”

 (Albrow, 1996) Globalization is the “global age”
 (Al-Rhodan, 2006) It cannot be contained within a specific time frame, all people, and
all situation.
 (Thomas Larsson, 2001) saw the globalization as “the process of world shrinkage, of
distance getting shorter, things moving closer.
 (Ohmae, 1992) globalization means the onset borderless world.
 (Robert Cox) the characteristics of the globalization trend include the
internationalizing of the product.
 (Kumar, 2003) the debate about what can be done about globalization and what it is
similar.
 (Ritzer, 2015) globalization is a transplanetary process or a set of processes involving
increasing liquidity and the growing multidirectional flows.
 (Arjun Appadurai, 1996) Globalization is a ‘world of things’ that have ‘different
speeds, axes, points of origin and termination’.

Why is there a need to define globalization? How can these help us understand
globalization?

 The perspective of the person who defines Globalization shapes its definition.
 Globalization is the debate and the debate is Globalization- sociologist Cesare Poppi
 Globalization is reality.
 What we could expect in the coming years is what has happened over the past 50 years
and that is the fluidity and complexity of globalization as a concept, which made more
debates, discussion, and definitions than agreements than on it.

Lesson No. 2

Metaphors of Globalization

Objective/s:

1. Identify the metaphors of globalization.

2. Understand the concept of globalization better with metaphors.

Try this Out:

Metaphor is a figure of speech in English. It does not use a word in its basic literal
sense. Instead, it uses a word in a kind of comparison. Can you give the meaning of each
metaphor listed below?

Raining cats and dogs:

apple of the eyes:

you’re my rock:

domino effect:

early bird:

Figure this Out:

In order for us to better understand the concept of globalization, we will utilize

metaphors. Metaphors make sure of one term to help us better understand another term. In our
case, the states matter – solid and liquid – will be used. In addition, other related concepts that
are included in the definition such structures and flows will be elaborated.

Solid vs Liquid

 Solidity also refers to barriers that prevent or make difficult the movement of things.
Solids can either be natural or man-made.

Example: the geographical location of the Philippines is far from the USA, therefore it
takes a while for an American-manufactured product to be delivered to the Philippines

 Liquid or Liquidity refers to an increasing ease of movement of people, things,

information, and places in the contemporary world. It also referred as a medium in
spreading globalization.

GE3 Page 4 of 20
The Contemporary World

Example: Television, social media, and other media platforms that makes it easy for
an information to spread.

 Flows are the movement of people, things, places and information.

Example: Poor illegal migrants flooding many parts of the world. Another one is the
virtual flow of legal and illegal information such as blogs, pornography, and illegal
migrants recreating ethnic enclaves in host countries.

Think It Over:

Individual Work – In this activity, you are to see the actual application of globalization on the
different aspects of daily life such as politics, music, sports, film, celebrity, and disaster. Write
your answer through the format which will be sent by the teacher on the Chatroom. Submit it
to the course facilitator through Messenger.

1. Answer the following questions:

a. Enumerate at least three of the most recent songs you have listened. Where did they
originate? Identify the nationality of the writer and /or artist for each music.
b. What gadgets or devices do you usually use to listen to music?
c. Where were these gadgets or device made (if applicable)? Where is the company
based?
d. How did you access these music? Did you purchase them online or listen to them
through Youtube, Spotify, and other music channels?

2. Using the above key ideas, present your answer in a paragraph form.
3. What metaphors are you going to use in order to improve your own definition of
globalization? Enumerate atleast 3 and explain each of them briefly.

Globalization Theories

Objective/s:

1. Analyze globalization , culturally, economically, and politically though

identifying its theories.

Try this Out:

What are the significant effects Spanish colonization has given to the
Philippines?enumerate.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Figure this Out:

Homogeneity vs Heterogeinity

Homogeneity

 The increasing sameness in the world as cultural inputs, economic factors and political
orientations of societies expand to create common practices , same economics and
similar forms of government.

 In Cultural Dimension, the dominant religion in our country is Christianity,

which brought to us by Spaniards. Another one is the americanization, which
was defined by Kuisel (1993) as the “import by non-americans of products,
images, technologies, practice, and behaviors that are closely related with
americans.
 There is recognition of the spread of neoliberalism, capitalisnm, and the
market economy in the world.
 In Political Dimension, the existing of “McWorld” with only one political
orientation is growing in today’s society.
 Global media are dominated by a small number of large corporations.
 Hacktivist extend to activism to the internet by hacking into computer programs
to promote a particular cause (Juris, 2005).

GE3 Page 6 of 20
The Contemporary World

Heterogeneity

 It pertains the creation of various cultural practices, new economies and political
groups because of the interaction of elements from different societies in the
world.
 Refers to the differences because of either lasting differences of the hybrids or
combinations of cultures that can be produced through the different
transplanetary processes.
 Heterogeneity in culture associated with cultural hybridization.
 “Glocalization” , a term used by Roland Robertson in 1992, happens when
global forces interact with local factors or a specific geographic area; “glocal” is
being produced.

Lesson No. 4

Dynamics of Local and Global Culture

Objective/s:

1. Identify and understand the three perspectives on global cultural flows.

Try this Out:

Using this Venn diagram, compare and contrast Philippine culture and that of another
country? Choose for another country:

Figure this Out:

Global flow of culture tend to move more easily around the globe than ever before ,
especially through non-material digital forms. There are three perspective on Global Cultural
Flows:

 DIFFERENTIALISM
 HYBRIDIZATION
 CONVERGENCE

GE3 Page 8 of 20
The Contemporary World

Cultural Differentialism

• emphasizes the fact that cultures are essentially different and are only superficially
affected by global flows.
• the interaction of cultures is deemed to contain the potential for “catastrophic
collision”.
• Samuel Huntington’s Theory on the clash of civilizations
-increasing interaction among different “civilizations” (Sinic, Islamic,
Orthodox and Western) would lead to intense clashes especially the economic
conflict between the Western and Sinic civilizations and bloody political
conflict between the Western and Islamic civilizations.

Cultural Hybridization

• emphasizes the integration of local and global cultures (Cvetkovich and Kellner, 1997).
• Globalization is also considered to be a creative process which gives rise to hybrid
entities that are not reducible to either the global or local.
• Glocalization or the interpenetration of the global and local resulting in unique
outcomes in different geographic areas (Guilianotti and Robertson , 2007).
• Arjun Appaduria’s “scapes” in 1996, where global involve people , technology, finance,
political images, media and the disjunctures between them, which lead to the creation
of cultural hybrids.

Cultural Convergence

• approach stresses to homogeneity introduced by globalization.

• cultures are deemed to be radically altered by strong flows, while cultural imperialism
happens when one culture imposes itself on and tends to destroy at least parts of another
culture.
• John Tomlinson’s idea of deterritorialization of culture.
 means that it is much more difficult to tie culture to a specific geographic point
of origin.
