Mangni : In this ceremony, the Marriage Rings are exchanged


between the Boy and the Girl in the presence of Relatives. Usually
Mangani is a small affair where only the relatives and close friends
of both the sides are invited. Sweets are distributed and a common
feast is given to both the families.

Sangeet : A dance program is held in both the homes, seperatly.


This dance call the Garbha Dance, singnifies the marriage. Songs especially meant for the Marriage
are sung and marriage Dance are performed by both the homes. This Dance calls for the beginning of
the Marriage.

Mehandi : On the day of Sangeet itself, Mehandi - the Tatoo Function is held. In the evening of the
Sangeet, the Mehandi is applied on the hands and feet of the Bride. It is said, more the color of the
mehandi, more will the bride be loved by her In - Laws.

» Marriage Ceremonies :

Ghodi Chadna : The Marriage Day begins with the Groom riding on the back of the She - Horse to
leave for the Brides Home. Grooms relative follow him dancing to the tunes of the drummers. The
entire Barat keeps on dancing till they reach the Brides Home.

Pokavu Ceremony : The Groom and his relatives are received by the Girls relatives at the Marriage
Venue. Rose petals and perfume is sprayed on them as they are welcomed inside the Wedding Hall.

Mangalpheras Ceremony : After the Barat reaches the brides home and they are welcomed then the
Groom is taken to the stage. Here the Grooms feet are washed with Milk The brides mother pinches
the Grooms Nose as he asks her approval.Once she agrees to it, the Bride is brought to the Stage. On
brides arrival, the Bride and Bride Groom are made to sit in front of the pyre. Vows are exchanged
with the help of the Marriage Priest and the four rounds are taken around the Pyre. These four Pheras
signify four basic human Goals Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. The completion of the rounds,
signify the marriage completion. The last thing which the Groom does here is to put Sindoor on the
Brides Forehead, acknowlidging her as his Wife.

» Pre - Marriage Ceremonies :

Engagement : In this Ceremony the Bride to be and the Groom to


be exchange rings as part of the acceptance of each other. this is
followed by the blessings of the elders and the pre marriage feast
for the relatives and friends.

Ganpati Sthapana : Before the Marriage Begins, the idol of the Lord Ganesha - the god of
Intelligence, is brought in the Home of the Groom and kept inside the Temple. Blessings are taken
from the Lord for a successful marriage.

Pithi Dastoor : This Custom involves the application of Turmeric/ Haldi paste on the hands and feet
of the Bride/ Groom in their respective homes. As per the Custom the Bride and the Groom are not
allowed to step outside the home after this ceremony, till the marriage is over.

Mehfils : A day before the marriage, a mehfil/ small party is set in the premises of the home of either
of Bride and Bridegroom. Members of both families gather to see the famous dance of Rajasthan
called the Ghoomar Dance. Even the home members dance in this function. The Mehfil is followed by a
Dinner for both the families.

Janeva Ceremony : In this Ceremony, on the morning of the marriage, the Groom is dressed in
saffron robes. He is supposed to perform a Havan ( prayer before Fire God), in which he wears a pious
thread. It signifies that after wearing this thread, the boy will either seek renunciation from the
worldly affairs or enter the Married Life.

Palla Dastoor : On the wedding day, in the early morning hours, the Grooms Father and Brothers
come to the Brides house with Gifts of Jewellery and Wedding dress for the Bride.

Toran : The entrance of the brides home is decorated with flowers and straw and this is called as
Toran. The groom hits the Toran with a Straw to ward off the Evil Eye from his to be Bride. This
Ceremony is called the Toranchar.

» Marriage Ceremonies :

Granthi Bandhan : After applying some turmeric paste on the Girls hand, the father of the Bride
gives her hand in the hands of the Groom. This signifies that he is passing on his responsibility to the
Groom. This Ritual is called Kanyadan - Kanya meaning Daughter and Daan meaning Giving.

Paani Grahan : In this Ceremony, the Groom takes the Right Hand of the Bride in his hand thus
taking her responsibility for lifetime.

Phera Ceremony : After taking the Brides responsibility, the Bride and the Groom go round the fire
seven times. This act is called Pheras. ( in some four pheras are taken in the Brides home and the
Rest of the three pheras are done in the Grooms house after the Bride has undergone the Bidai
Ceremony).

Satapadi : After going round the fire, the Bride and the Groom now take Seven steps together
towards the Sun Gods Direction. It signifies that from now onwards both of them will walk together in
all the situations of life - wether good or bad. Now both proclaim themselves as Man and Wife.

Bidai : After all the ceremonies are done, the Girl/ Bride is handed over to the Boy/Groom. Now she is
sent along her better half by her relatives.

» Pre - Marriage Ceremonies

Ashirbaad : In the morning hours of the marriage day, the couple

Aai Budo Bhaat : Aai Budho Bhaat is the bachelorette party which
is give to the Bride by her relatives. This party signifies the approval

Holud Kota : In this ceremony the bride is applied Haldi/ Turmeric by five or seven married women.

Dodhi Mongol : On the day of the Marriage, in the early morning hours, five married women of the
brides side, adorn her with Traditional Bangles called the Shakha and Paula - one pair of red and one
pair or white bangles. The meal of Rice and Curd is also served to her, which is the only meal she
takes in the entire day, till the marriage is solmenized.

Mehandi : A day prior to the Marriage, Mehndi ( Indian Tatoo), is applied on the hands and feet of
the Bride. Various designs, some bold and some light in color are made. It takes one to eight hours for
the Mehndi to dry up, till the color of Mehandi comes on the hands.

» Marriage Ceremonies :

Bor Boron : When the Bridegroom reaches the door of the Bride, the enitre family of the groom is
welcomed by the Brides relatives. Husked rice and trefiol are sprinkled on them. Then sweets are
served to them as a good omen.

Potto Bastra : After the welcome, the groom is made to sit at the chadnatolla - wedding altar and
canopy - the sanctum sanctorum where the bride, the bridegroom and the priest sits. Here the Groom
is offered new clothes by the person who will carry out Sampradan.

Saat Paak : In this, the bride who sitting on a wooden surface, is lifted by her brothers and taken
around the groom in seven circles. This signifies that the bride and the bridegroom are tightly winded
with each other.

Mala Badal : In Mala Badal, the bride and the bridegroom exchange Garlands with each other.

Sampradan : In Sampradan, the hands of both bride and groom are winded with a white thread,
amongst vedic recitals. Their hands are then put on a sacred brass pot filled with water. As soon as
they touch the water filled pot, vedic chants are again recited.

Yagna : After Sampradan is over, the bride and the groom sit in front of the fire. They take the
blessings of the God Fire as they recite Vedic Chants after the priest.

Saat Paak : Seven Circles are taken by the couple around the fire. Once the circle is complete, the
boy lifts the bride and crosses her over a Stone. This method signifies, that the Groom is taking the
bride front her home and is taking her to his home with approval from family members.

Sindoor Daan and Ghomta : In this ceremony, red color Sindoor is put on the head of the bride by
the groom without seeing her face. This Sindoor is put with a Beetle Leaf. After this the Groom
presents her with a new saree which she accepts. This is the acceptance of each other.
