Full Lesson Plan Overview
Completely Customizable!

The Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets lesson plan is downloadable in PDF and
Word. The Word file is viewable with any PC or Mac and can be further adjusted if you
want to mix questions around and/or add your own headers for things like "Name,"
"Period," and "Date." The Word file offers unlimited customizing options so that you can
teach in the most efficient manner possible. Once you download the file, it is yours to
keep and print for your classroom.

Lesson Plan Calendars

The Lesson Plan Calendars provide daily suggestions about what to teach. They
include detailed descriptions of when to assign reading, homework, in-class work, fun
activities, quizzes, tests and more. Use the entire Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets calendar, or supplement it with your own curriculum ideas. Calendars cover
one, two, four, and eight week units. Determine how long your Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets unit will be, then use one of the calendars provided to plan out your
entire lesson.

Chapter Abstracts

Chapter abstracts are short descriptions of events that occur in each chapter of Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. They highlight major plot events and detail the
important relationships and characteristics of important characters. The Chapter
Abstracts can be used to review what the students have read, or to prepare the
students for what they will read. Hand the abstracts out in class as a study guide, or use
them as a "key" for a class discussion. They are relatively brief, but can serve to be an
excellent refresher of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for either a student or
teacher.

Character and Object Descriptions

Character and Object Descriptions provide descriptions of the significant characters as

well as objects and places in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. These can be
printed out and used as an individual study guide for students, a "key" for leading a
class discussion, a summary review prior to exams, or a refresher for an educator. The
character and object descriptions are also used in some of the quizzes and tests in this
lesson plan. The longest descriptions run about 200 words. They become shorter as the
importance of the character or object declines.

5
Daily Lessons

This section of the lesson plan contains 30 Daily Lessons. Daily Lessons each have a
specific objective and offer at least three (often more) ways to teach that objective.
Lessons include classroom discussions, group and partner activities, in-class handouts,
individual writing assignments, at least one homework assignment, class participation
exercises and other ways to teach students about Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets in a classroom setting. You can combine daily lessons or use the ideas within
them to create your own unique curriculum. They vary greatly from day to day and offer
an array of creative ideas that provide many options for an educator.

Fun Classroom Activities

Fun Classroom Activities differ from Daily Lessons because they make "fun" a priority.
The 20 enjoyable, interactive classroom activities that are included will help students
understand Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in fun and entertaining ways. Fun
Classroom Activities include group projects, games, critical thinking activities,
brainstorming sessions, writing poems, drawing or sketching, and countless other
creative exercises. Many of the activities encourage students to interact with each other,
be creative and think "outside of the box," and ultimately grasp key concepts from the
text by "doing" rather than simply studying. Fun activities are a great way to keep
students interested and engaged while still providing a deeper understanding of Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and its themes.

Essay Questions/Writing Assignments

These 20 Essay Questions/Writing Assignments can be used as essay questions on a

test, or as stand-alone essay topics for a take-home or in-class writing assignment on
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Students should have a full understanding of
the unit material in order to answer these questions. They often include multiple parts of
the work and ask for a thorough analysis of the overall text. They nearly always require
a substantial response. Essay responses are typically expected to be one (or more)
page(s) and consist of multiple paragraphs, although it is possible to write answers
more briefly. These essays are designed to challenge a student's understanding of the
broad points in a work, interactions among the characters, and main points and themes
of the text. But, they also cover many of the other issues specific to the work and to the
world today.

Short Essay Questions

The 60 Short Essay Questions listed in this section require a one to two sentence
answer. They ask students to demonstrate a deeper understanding of Harry Potter and
the Chamber of Secrets by describing what they've read, rather than just recalling it.
The short essay questions evaluate not only whether students have read the material,
but also how well they understand and can apply it. They require more thought than
multiple choice questions, but are shorter than the essay questions.

6
Multiple Choice Questions

The 180 Multiple Choice Questions in this lesson plan will test a student's recall and
understanding of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Use these questions for
quizzes, homework assignments or tests. The questions are broken out into sections,
so they focus on specific chapters within Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This
allows you to test and review the book as you proceed through the unit. Typically, there
are 5-15 questions per chapter, act or section.

Evaluation Forms

Use the Oral Reading Evaluation Form when students are reading aloud in class. Pass
the forms out before you assign reading, so students will know what to expect. You can
use the forms to provide general feedback on audibility, pronunciation, articulation,
expression and rate of speech. You can use this form to grade students, or simply
comment on their progress.

Use the Writing Evaluation Form when you're grading student essays. This will help you
establish uniform criteria for grading essays even though students may be writing about
different aspects of the material. By following this form you will be able to evaluate the
thesis, organization, supporting arguments, paragraph transitions, grammar, spelling,
punctuation, etc. of each student's essay.

Quizzes/Homework Assignments

The Quizzes/Homework Assignments are worksheets that can be used in a variety of

ways. They pull questions from the multiple choice and short essay sections, the
character and object descriptions, and the chapter abstracts to create worksheets that
can be used for pop quizzes, in-class assignments and homework. Periodic homework
assignments and quizzes are a great way to encourage students to stay on top of their
assigned reading. They can also help you determine which concepts and ideas your
class grasps and which they need more guidance on. By pulling from the different
sections of the lesson plan, quizzes and homework assignments offer a comprehensive
review of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in manageable increments that are
less substantial than a full blown test.

7
Tests

Use the Test Summary page to determine which pre-made test is most relevant to your
students' learning styles. This lesson plan provides both full unit tests and mid-unit tests.
You can choose from several tests that include differing combinations of multiple choice
questions, short answer questions, short essay questions, full essay questions,
character and object matching, etc. Some of the tests are designed to be more difficult
than others. Some have essay questions, while others are limited to short-response
questions, like multiple choice, matching and short answer questions. If you don't find
the combination of questions that best suits your class, you can also create your own
test on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Daily Lessons
Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Objective

While Harry Potter is written in a fairly straightforward style, there are bound to be some
words that students don't immediately recognize. The objective of his lesson is to
promote student reading comprehension.

Lesson

1. Open a discussion: Ask students to select a word from the previous night's reading
that they didn't immediately understand. How did the student come to understand the
meaning of that word? Talk about word comprehension methods and the need to
understand what is being read.

2. Use the word "Muggles" as an example of a word that is specific to this particular
piece of literature. Although this word is unlikely to be found in any other literary work, is
it acceptable for writers to use words such as this? Is it possible that "Muggles" could
become an accepted word because of the use in this book? Have students list other
words or catch phrases that have become accepted because of literature.

3. Homework: Write a paragraph on a general knowledge topic with which students will
be familiar. Exchange three or four words for some other word with an entirely different
meaning. For example, instead of saying "The cow jumped over the moon," say, "The
cow 'sneakered' over the moon." Talk about the association from the word "jump" to
"feet" to "sneakers" as being how that word came to be used . Give students a few
minutes to come up with their own examples.

4. For homework: Have students create a list of ten popularly accepted words that have
derived from literature, including how the word is used in modern language as well as
the source. Be prepared to allow some leeway with regard to slang students use when
talking to friends.

Lesson 2 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

Harry Potter describes the eyes in the hedge that are staring at him. The objective of
this lesson is to raise student awareness of the use and importance of imagery.

34
Lesson

1. Create a list of ten to twenty items easily seen in the classroom. Have students write
a descriptive word or phrase that comes to mind. Open class discussion about the
necessity for writers to use imaginative imagery - "marbled" rather than "brown" to
describe a desk surface.

2. Open a discussion. Have students list the words and phrases that bring to mind some
specific image. How important are these descriptive words and phrases to the
enjoyment of the story?

3. For homework: Have students re-write the scene in which Dumbledore's office is
described, using different descriptive words to create the necessary imagery. Are there
better words the author could have chosen?

4. Class discussion: Have the students break into groups. Have part of the groups find
reasons that the imagery used was sufficient. Have the other groups debate what could
have been better used to convey what the author wanted while Harry was looking at the
eyes. Example: The hedge stared back at him. Two green eyes, larger than the leaves,
looked strangely camouflaged in the foliage but were obviously out of place none the
less.

Lesson 3 (from Chapter 2)

Objective

The story is written with a limited view. That means that the reader (or the viewer)
knows only what the main character knows. The objective of this lesson is to make
students aware of the view and its importance.

Lesson

1. Define omniscient and limited. Have students create a list of advantages and
disadvantages of each method for writing.

2. Discuss literature that uses the omniscient view; the limited view. Find familiar
examples, including past class reading so that students can readily grasp the
differences and similarities.

3. For homework: Have students write an essay explaining how the omniscient view
could have been used in Harry Potter. Encourage creativity but make the point that in
order for there to be a omniscient view, there must be some way to impart information
that the main character is unaware of. Explain different ways this information can be
given to the reader only.

35
4. Have the students discuss what it calls to mind when they know ahead of time that
the story will be limited or omniscient. Discuss why and if these assumptions are
correct.

Lesson 4 (from Chapter 2)

Objective

Even though Harry Potter is a relatively new book, quotes from literary works have the
potential to become famous in their own right. The objective of this lesson is to examine
the role of quotes in literature.

Lesson

1. Discussion: Have students list their favorite quote from the story. Why does that
quote appeal to them?

2. Have students write an essay listing some other famous quotes. Have the students
insert these quotes into Harry Potter where they would be appropriate without changing
the original quote. What impact does it have on the reader?

3. For homework: Have students make a list of famous quotes from their own
experiences. Encourage them to use parents, siblings, classmates and teachers. What
is there about those personal situations that made these quotes memorable?

4. Discussion: Have the students discuss the reasons that people so widely use famous
quotes.

5. Debate: Break the students into groups. Have them debate the difference in someone
using quotes from moments in history (i.e. JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr., Helen Keller)
and someone using quotes from movies (i.e. Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, The Shining).
Give specific quotes as examples.

Lesson 5 (from Chapter 3)

Objective

Although Harry Potter is fictional, the time in which a story is set has a tremendous
impact on the characters, setting and realism. The object of this lesson is to bring a
deeper understanding of the importance of the time and its impact on everything in the
story.

36
Lesson

1. Discussion: Have students consider whether it is easier to write about a familiar time
and place or one that is unknown or imaginary. Point out that it depends largely on
whether the book is supposed to seem realistic.

2. Break students into teams of three or four with a three- to four-foot length of
construction paper (A local printer or newspaper office might be able to provide a small
roll at little or no charge). Provide markers, colored pencils or any other art and drawing
supplies available. Offer students the option of creating either an alternative to the
imaginary setting of Hogwarts or the realistic setting of the Dursley home on Privy Drive.
Encourage creativity in locations such as outer space, in a volcano or simply a different
country. Display the results and discuss the reasons for their choices as well as the
details of their settings.

3. For homework: Have students write an essay supporting or disputing the details of
Hogwarts and the Dursley residence presented in Harry Potter. Grade on
thoughtfulness in the approach as well as writing.

4. Debate: Have the students pick a side. The story never tells you an actual date.
There are things in the book that might imply the date but it is implied only. In five, ten,
twenty years, will it be obvious that the story took place that long ago or will it continue
to seem like a current date to the person reading? Give specific reasons for your belief.

Lesson 6 (from Chapter 3)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to teach students the difference between stories written in
first person and those written in third person.

Lesson

1. Classwork: Split the class into two sections. Have students answer the question,
"Could this story have been told entirely in first person?" Have one side debate for and
the other against.

2. Have the students explain the significance of the story being told in third person and
what it adds to the story as opposed to first person?

3. Homework: Have students write a synopsis of the story up to this point using only
third person, or have them write the synopsis in first person from Harry's point of view or
from Ron or Hermione's point of view. Note that if you use Ron or Hermione, there will
be Harry's birthday and other scenes that will be omitted and some scenes must be
added since we don't see Ron or Hermione at the beginning but know they are worried.

37
4.Discussion: What did the author gain from using third person? List other literature that
uses this same point of view and why it is more effective.

Lesson 7 (from Chapter 4)

Objective

Family dynamics plays an important role in explaining a particular character's actions

and reactions. Members of the Weasley household are no exception. The objective of
this lesson is to study character interactions.

Lesson

1. Open a discussion of the Weasley family. List all the ways they are a typical family of
England of this time period. List all the ways they are atypical. How do these facts
impact the various family members?

2. Have students select a particular character in the Weasley family with whom they can
identify. Write an essay of the life of that character one year before Harry Potter's
appearance.

3. Homework: Conduct a poll of family dynamics. Have students list the number of
siblings in their family and indicate their place (in age) among the children. Beside each
child, list two or three adjectives that best describe that sibling. Then open the floor for
discussion to search for common traits among the oldest and youngest girls as well as
the youngest and oldest boys. Compare those to Ginny, Ron, George, Fred and Percy.

4. Have the students list the qualities that differ in Hermione and Ron. What of these
qualities can be attributed to their family lives? Did the author do an adequate job of
associating proper backgrounds to these characters? Explain.

Lesson 8 (from Chapter 4)

Objective

Harry Potter sees Lucius Malfoy at Knockturn Alley selling Dark Magic artifacts. This is
an example of foreshadowing. The purpose of this lesson is to heighten awareness of
foreshadowing in literature.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Based on Lucius Malfoy's discussion at Borgin and Burkes,
what can the reader deduct about his character and his role? Why? Ask students who
have seen this story as a movie to consider what theatrics could have been used in the
movie to relate the foreshadowing.

38
2. For classwork: Have students select an additional scene that turns out to be a case of
foreshadowing. What was the clue? What was the outcome?

3. For homework: Present students with this scenario- Lucious Malfoy wasn't seen by
Harry that day at Knockturn Alley or Diagon Alley. Have students then write the outcome
of the story as it might have been without that foreshadowing.

4. Give the students a short list of other literary works, preferably ones that they have
read in class. What foreshadowing can be found in those works that mimics some of
those in Harry Potter? Give examples.

Lesson 9 (from Chapter 5)

Objective

Reading is a vital skill. The objective of this lesson is to raise student awareness of the
necessity of reading well, and the use of popular fiction like Harry Potter in promoting
this skill.

Lesson

1. Discussion: Talk about the things that can and cannot be accomplished without
reading.

2. Define what kind of reading a person must be able to do in order to succeed in life. Is
there a place for novels such as Harry Potter in teaching reading? What about other
pieces of fiction? Ask students whether they would have elected to read Harry Potter on
their own.

3. Homework: Have students write a brief essay about their favorite piece of literature.
Challenge students to read something outside their normal reading choices.

4. Have students discuss the obvious drawbacks for a person that can't read. Have the
students pick a character in the book and give the differences that would have been
made had that person been unable to read. (They don't have to be illiterate. They can
be really nearsighted, have had a spell cast on them, be from a foreign country, etc.)

Lesson 10 (from Chapter 5)

Objective

The tone that an author uses will influence the way a reader relates to it. The objective
of this lesson is to understand the importance the tone Rowling uses and compare it to
other literary works.

39
Lesson

1. Open a classroom discussion. Ask students if the story is easy or difficult to read.
Have the students explain their opinions.

2. Most students already know the story of Harry Potter in some other version. Ask if
that knowledge makes the book easier to understand or more difficult and why they
think that.

3. Homework: Have students find another literary work that they believe to be similar in
tone to that of Harry Potter. Have them present a particular section in class and discuss
the similarities and differences in tone.

4. Put the students in groups. Have the students decide as a group what the tone is in
the story (formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic,
condescending, ext). Have the groups rewrite a short section in the story and use a
different tone.

Lesson 11 (from Chapter 6)

Objective

Social interaction helps to explain a particular character's actions and reactions.

Students and teachers at Hogwarts are no exception. The objective of this lesson is to
study character interactions.

Lesson

1. Have students select a particular character in the school with whom they can identify.
Write an essay of the life of that character one year before his/her Chamber of Secret
appearance.

2. Open a discussion of the students and teachers. List all the ways they are typical of
this time period. List all the ways they are atypical. How do these facts impact the
direction of the story?

3. Homework: Compare teacher positions. List several teachers that are in the story and
the traits that are attributed to the teachers. What would be the real world equivalent of
that teacher? For example: Madam Hooch is the Quidditch teacher. She appears to be
what would be a modern gym teacher. Mr. Filch is the caretaker at Hogwarts. He is the
equivalent of a janitor.

4. Some characters in the story do not have large scenes even though they have
important roles in the story (i.e. Moaning Myrtle, Mr. Filch, etc.). Give ways the author
lets the reader know these lesser seen characters are important to the plot.

40
Lesson 12 (from Chapter 6)
Objective

The objective of this lesson is to help students understand that the perceptions of others
impact their own.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Ask how many students saw the popular movie version of this
story. Be prepared with a cast of characters who filled the roles of each of the main
story characters. What impact does that movie version have on what they envision
when they read this story? Is it possible to put those characters aside and imagine the
main characters with other faces?

2. For homework: Challenge your own perceptions of what wizards and witches wear.
Why do most people envision wizards and witches in black capes and pointy hats? Is it
possible to think of some other clothing? List the reasons the pointy hats and capes are
necessary in some works?

3. For a class project: Have students use whatever medium they choose to create the
appearance of a modern day wizard. Computer images, a costume, a drawing or even a
sculpture would be acceptable. Have them write a scene in which their character in their
newly found garb interacts with others. Have groups, or the entire class, analyze the
results to determine what preconceived notions were evident in this "new" creation and
whether this "new" fashion is still effective.

4. Have the students list other literary work where there are characters that are dressed
in a certain way because of perceptions and tradition.

Lesson 13 (from Chapter 7)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to help students realize that writers have several ways
available to indicate the passage of time.

Lesson

1. Discussion: Ask students to offer an alternative way to explain that several days have
passed. Remind students that the options are basically limitless.

2. Class project: In movies, there are other ways to show the passage of time. For
example, Scenery often is shown changing quickly, or in frames of different seasons, or
the growth of a particular tree. A person may be walking down a street while they

41
camera view changes. Divide students into groups of three or four and have them make
a movie depicting the passage of time in this scene.

3. Homework: Have the students pick a place in the book where there is not a time
amount explained from one point to the next. Have them describe why they believe it to
be a short period of time, and how much, and how the author would have changed the
description had it been more or less.

4. Write a short story about your own life or someone you know. Have a piece of time go
by and find different ways you could show the passage of time (it can be hour, day, year,
etc.). Which one do you pick over the others and why?

Lesson 14 (from Chapter 7)

Objective

The Harry Potter books have been made into a series of movies. The objective of this
lesson is to look at different media styles used to portray a story and the different
methods used to convey the same scene.

Lesson

1. Discussion: The Chamber of Secrets differs from the movie in several ways. Have the
students discuss the differences and the reason these changes were most likely made.
Were they effective?

2. Writing one book would take less equipment than putting on a play or making a
movie. Have the students debate which is more entertaining and effective. Point out that
the imagination used when reading is often more effective than any equipment or movie
illusion.

3. Homework: Have the students pick a medium to rewrite a scene from The Chamber
of Secrets. They may either choose radio (tape or old radio programs), movie, cartoon,
theater, or any other they can think of. Have them explain in detail what would be used
for their medium that would not be used for others and why it would be effective.
Example: Radio would have sound effects and a narrator that a movie or theater would
not need. Cartoon would not require the computer effects that a movie would.

4. Often times people prefer watching a movie as opposed to reading a book or going to
a play. Give your personal opinion as to why this is true. Would the Harry Potter books
have been as popular had they not been made into movies?

5. List other literary works that have been made into movies. What are the similarities
and differences between those that have been made into movies and those that have
not?

42
Lesson 15 (from Chapter 8)
Objective

Harry hears the voice that no one else can hear. The author never tells us what the
characters' faces are showing, but readers still get a common idea from other phrases
and things the character is doing. The objective of this lesson is to understand that a
description of physical action or the reaction a character has can describe the feelings a
character is having.

Lesson

1. Discussion: Harry begins to follow the voice while Hermione and Ron freeze. Have
each member of the class explain what look was conveyed on Hermione and Ron as
they are with Harry. Do the descriptions differ greatly? What does the author use to
create this mental picture?

2. Have the students rewrite the scene where Harry hears the voice with Ron and
Hermione. Have them give greater detail to Ron and Hermione and what they are
actually feeling. Does this increase the overall effect or not?

3. Homework: Have the students pick a scene from a literary work where the use of
words conveys something that is not specifically stated by the author. Have the class
openly discuss these.

4. Ask the students to break into groups and provide a short list of phrases that are
commonly used in society to convey a feeling or thought. Explain why these work so
well. Example: "Well, I never." This has been used many times in movies and literary
works to convey a specific expression. The term "hair raising experience" is used to
describe fright or extreme uneasiness. It most likely comes from the fact that when a
person is scared, his/her body hair stands on end.

Lesson 16 (from Chapter 8)

Objective

Nearly Headless Nick invites Harry to his Deathday party. The objective of this lesson is
to decipher the importance of the use of holidays, events, or rites of passage that are
unique to the author.

Lesson

1. Have the class discuss the significance of Nearly Headless Nick throwing a Deathday
Party in connection to the objects that decorate the room.

43
2. Have the students split into small groups and plan a Deathday Party for someone that
has been dead for some time. The person can be fictional or real. Have them explain
the significance of the objects decorating the room and the others in attendance--the
more symbolism the better.

3. Homework: Have the students pick a literary work that uses a phrase to explain a
holiday or rite of passage that is particular to that work. Have the students explain their
picks.

4. Discussion: Put the students into groups and give them a specific group on which to
focus. It can be either ethnic, religious or other. Have them list holidays that are specific
to that group and why. (Germany- Unity Day. Treaty signed between the two Germany's
after the fall of the Berlin wall. Jewish-Yom Kipper. Day designed to bring Jewish people
closer to God.)

Lesson 17 (from Chapter 9)

Objective

The message that is found by the cat is written on the wall and the reader finds that it
cannot be scrubbed clean. The objective of this lesson is to look closely at the
symbolism used.

Lesson

1. Discussion: What, if any, is the importance of the message being written on the wall
and the fact that it cannot be easily removed?

2. Have the students take a look at the words that are written on the wall. Could other
words have been used more effectively? Explain.

3. Homework: The story takes place at a magical school where the author could have
used any desired method to have displayed the message. Have the students either (a)
explain why the foot-high letters on the wall were the most effective, or (b) give a
second method of delivery that would have been as effective. Be sure to explain why
the changes were made and how it helped.

4. Describe the differences in literal symbols and abstract symbols. Find examples of
both. (The Bald Eagle is an abstract symbol used for the United States. White Whale is
a whale(literal) but is used to signify evil in Moby Dick.)

44
Lesson 18 (from Chapter 9)
Objective

The objective of this lesson is to test students' awareness of literary tools.

Lesson

1. Have students list: An example of alliteration; an example of a metaphor; an example

of foreshadowing; a theme; a point at which a thematic climax occurs; and a point at
which a dramatic climax occurs.

2. Discuss the importance of the thoughts and worries of which only Harry is aware..
Discuss different ways that the author can convey these unspoken ideas. How could
they be conveyed if the story were put into a play?

3. Homework: Have students list other literary tools used in this work and give an
example.

4. There are aspects of literary works that the reader will have to identify regardless of
what literary tools are being identified, i.e. plot, conflict, character interaction, etc. Have
the students give examples of how changing only one of these in the story may change
the entire story. Openly discuss.

Lesson 19 (from Chapter 10)

Objective

Mudblood and Squib are words that are used as prejudicial slurs although the
characters never mention things such as race or creed. The object of this lesson is to
consider word usage and to understand that language is constantly evolving.

Lesson

1. Break students into groups of three or four. Have them create a list of reasons
language changes. Compare the lists.

2. Present students with a series of pictures from a magazine. Include well-known

people, food, animals, places and any other image that might spark the imagination.
Show the pictures, one at a time, and have students write down a single word or phrase
explaining the contents of the picture. The fact that some will recognize a particular
movie star or singer while others do not is an example of the way people bring their own
experiences into a situation. Compare that with how people talk to make the point that
words and language evolve as people grow and share knowledge.

45
3. For homework: Have students look into their own heritage. How many can claim a
background that they don't claim now? Example: Is your great-great grandmother Native
American although you are Caucasian? Note that almost all ethnic groups have, at
some point, been tagged with racially biased nicknames.

4. Have students speculate on the future of demeaning names, for example, people are
racially integrating more so racial slurs will be less. Religions are becoming more
diverse and some are more violent and so will be targeted more with degrading names.

Lesson 20 (from Chapter 10)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to raise awareness regarding the use of descriptive words
and phrases to explain moments in a literary work or characters.

Lesson

1. Have students close their eyes for a full minute. Call for quiet but realize that
complete silence isn't likely. Then give students ten minutes to write descriptions of
everything they heard, smelled and felt during that moment of silence.

2. Ask students what particular scene has stood out for its descriptive value. What is it
about that particular scene that has captured and held attention? What kinds of
descriptive words were used?

3. Homework: Although Harry Potter is made for a younger audience, it still contains
images that might be frightening or would have been several years ago. Have students
debate the need for "shock value" in the descriptions of modern-day writers and movie
makers. Are readers and viewers becoming accustomed to violence to the point that
writers are forced to write with deeper violence?

4. Have the students pick an author they are familiar with that has done more than one
work. What consistences do they notice about that author's choice of words and
phrases. For example, Steven King uses excruciating detail to describe everything that
a character sees and feels.

Lesson 21 (from Chapter 11)

Objective

Each of the characters in the book has his/her quirks and unique attitudes. The
objective of this lesson is to identify the need and value of creating individualized
characters.

46
Lesson

1. Ron, Hermione and Harry are the three characters that the reader sees the most.
Describe their differences and likenesses. How would the story have differed if they had
been more alike?

2. Discussion: Are the characters Rowling portrays larger than life or could they be
people you might meet in real life as far as characteristics go? Explain and give
examples.

3. Homework: Select a small scene in the story and then pick a character that is "larger
than life" and put him/her in the place of one of the characters in the story and explain
why. For example, replace Severus Snape with Captain Hook. Both are proud and have
a dislike for most children. replace Hermione with Lucy from Peanuts. Both girls profess
to be book smart and give advice whether it is asked for or not (good grief). Replace
Hagrid with the Big Friendly Giant from Roald Dahl's book. They are both massive in
stature but very kind.

4. Discuss why it is so important that each character has quirks and uniqueness.
Explain your answers giving other literary works to defend your answers.

Lesson 22 (from Chapter 11)

Objective

In the dueling club, the reader sees several different people paired up that are
opposites. The objective of this lesson is to look at compare and contrast as a method
of description.

Lesson

1. List the differences between Snape and Lockhart. List the differences between Harry
Potter and Draco Malfoy. Explain any significance in the fact that these groups are
paired up at the dueling match.

2. Discussion: Discuss the similarities and differences between Snape and Draco as
well as between Harry and Lockhart. Do you believe that the author creates a clearer
line between these sets of characters after having them interact in the duel? Explain.

3. Homework: Pick other literary works that show the differences in the characters by
having them pair up rather than listing their characters differences. Are both methods
effective?

4. Have the students explain a time that they were paired up with someone they were
"opposite" to in character, i.e. Thanksgiving table, work project, basketball team. Give
moments in life and literary works where this is helpful as apposed to a detriment.

47
Lesson 23 (from Chapter 12)
Objective

The phoenix is a bird that Dumbledore has and later in the story it will come to Harry's
aid in the chamber. Look at the significance of this mythical creature.

Lesson

1. Name other characters in mythology and real life that have a significance similar to
the phoenix.

2. Discussion: Does the use of a mythical flaming bird go smoothly with the story or
does it conflict with the rest of the story? Explain. What could the bird signify for
Dumbledore and for Harry?

3. Homework: Find a literary work that holds a creature or object that has the same
effect as the phoenix. Explain your choice

4. Although the phoenix is not, often mythical creatures are made up of more than one
animal such as the minotaur (man and bull) or the mermaid (fish and woman). Give
reasons why an author would pair up creatures together in a literary work. Create your
own mythical creature and explain its attributes.

Lesson 24 (from Chapter 12)

Objective

The password to the Slytherin House is "pure-blood." The objective here is to think
about the underlying meaning of each phrase the author uses.

Lesson

1. List the various possibilities that the word "pure-blood" was used for in the Slytherin
house. What is the author's purpose in using this word as the password for the Slytherin
house?

2. Discussion: What phrases in the book are unique to The Chamber of Secrets that
hold hints to solving the Chamber of Secrets' mystery? Explain.

3. Homework: Given what the reader knows about the Slytherin house, what other
passwords would have been effective? Do you think the author could have given a
better word? Do you feel that this phrase was too obvious? Explain your answers.

48
4. In the real world "pure-blood" is often used to signify an animal that has had lineage
of a desired line (such as dogs or horses). When used in this context the word does not
have a derogatory meaning. Does this meaning increase the authors meaning? Explain.

Lesson 25 (from Chapter 13)

Objective

The way a story is presented is an important tool used by writers to engage the reader.
The objective of this lesson is to heighten awareness of ways authors engage the
reader.

Lesson

1. Have students write brief explanations of the way this author encourages action,
reaction and interest among readers.

2. Ask students for their preferences: to listen to a lecture or to engage in exercises that
teach the objectives. Have students defend their preferences.

3. Homework: Have students consider the story Riddle shows to Harry. What is it about
being in the story that was engaging? Since, in this moment, Riddle was an author,
discuss the importance of Harry's limited view while he was seeing Tom Riddle's
images.

4. Split into large groups and have the students look at Rowling's books compared to
other authors' stylea of writing. What main differences can be found between the ways
used to engage the reader? The authors can be ones that have been read in class or
authors that are well known.

Lesson 26 (from Chapter 14)

Objective

What is the significance in the choice of Hermione as a victim?

Lesson

1. Discuss how the story would have differed if Hermione had not been petrified?

2. What impact does it have on the other characters in the book that Hermione became
a victim? How does this affect their actions?

3. Homework: Would it have been as effective to have had Ron petrified? Explain.
Given the relationships between the main characters, why did the author choose her?

49
Can you find any other works that have the same situation reflected? Example: In the
Matrix, Trinity dies leaving Neo to go alone without her. Trinity had been the brains of
the operations much like Hermione had been. This leaves Neo to figure things out on
his own.

4. Sometimes authors will choose to have their main character killed at the end of the
book. Occasionally this is sacrifice so that evil can be stopped, when other times it is a
moment to cause full reflection. Speculate on the purpose of Hermione's petrification.
Would it have been the same if Ron had been petrified?

Lesson 27 (from Chapter 15)

Objective

Writers use "dialog tags" such as "he said" or "she exclaimed." The object of this lesson
is to encourage students to become more aware of the use of dialog tags.

Lesson

1. Have students identify dialog tags in the story, The Chamber of Secrets. How would
dialog tags have changed had the story been written in a narrator-dialog form?

2. Open a class discussion to create a list of alternatives other than "said" as a dialog
tag. Ask students whether words such as "exclaimed" or "cried" evoke a greater
emotional response. Is it possible that dialog can be intimated without using any words
at all? Ask for examples.

3. For homework: Have students write a story that uses dialog tags.

4. Have the students take a piece of the story that uses descriptive dialog tags (i.e. she
exclaimed, he cried, ext). Have them rewrite the piece as if it were a play. Note that
there will have to be description of action and emotion. example: "Dumbledore's been
driven out by the mere memory of me!" he hissed.

Tom Riddle: Dumbledore's been driven out by the mere memory of me! (Tom seems to
hiss these words in the same parsel tongue that would call forth the basilisk)

Lesson 28 (from Chapter 16)

Objective

It is impossible for an author to write a book and not bring some aspect of his/her life
into the work. The object of this lesson will be to look at the impression each author has
on his/her own work.

50
Lesson

1. Discussion. Think of other works that are similar to Harry Potter. What might have
prompted the idea for the story and characters? What do you know about the author
that is similar to the characters?

2. Clip a series of large, colorful photos from magazines. Show the images to students
and then give them a few minutes to create a setting and a premise for a fictional story
prompted by the images. Note that even when you give students the same pictures the
story will vary greatly.

3. Homework: Have students write a short play of their own. Have them include a few
sentences at the end outlining the inspiration.

4. Look at other literary works that were influenced greatly by the author even if they
were not about the author himself, for example, J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan.
Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, had a nautical background.

Lesson 29 (from Chapter 17)

Objective

Tom Riddle tries to use Ginny Weasley as a sacrificial lamb so that through her death
he might live. Take a closer look at Ginny Weasley and her role in the story.

Lesson

1. Have the class look at the words that Tom said to Harry explaining how he used
Ginny. Tom says that he was able to start pouring his soul back into her. Discuss the
role that Ginny played to both Tom and Harry. If it had been a character Harry didn't
know what would have been different?

2. Have the students split up and discuss Ginny's blame in the situation. What could she
have done differently? Was she totally innocent or did she have some small measure of
control? Debate one group for one against.

3. Homework: Take a closer look at Ginny and what made her a victim of Tom Riddle.
Take another character from Hogwarts and place him/her in her position. Explain how
things would have gone differently.

4. What other literary works use a character, such as Ginny, to draw the main
character? Explain why the use of a character that has a seemingly lesser role works so
well.

51
Lesson 30 (from Chapter 18)
Objective

The story ends with Harry and the others walking back through the gate to the Muggle
world. Take a closer look at the way the story ended.

Lesson

1. Have the class list things in the story that were not neatly explained. For example,
what happened to Gilderoy Lockhart? What did the school do about the Chamber of
Secrets? What happened when Harry got back home? Explain if these things added to
the story or detracted.

2. Take one of the things that was left open by the author and write a conclusion to it.
Try to keep the author's tone and method intact.

3. Homework: What are reasons for keeping the story endings open? Find a literary
work that mirrors the ending of The Chamber of Secrets and explain how they are
similar and how they differ.

4. There are other stories that end with the character entering back into his/her own
world, i.e. Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz. What is the
significance of having the story end at this point and not continuing farther on to let the
reader see what has resulted from the experiences? Is this an effective tool the author
uses?

Short Essay Questions Key
1. Describe Harry's feelings for Hogwarts, his school, as compared to the Dursley
house where he lives with his aunt and uncle from what is detailed in Chapter
One.

Harry feels as if he is known and liked at Hogwarts where people knew his mother and
father and cared for them and care for him as well. He is treated like an outcast in his
own home at the Dursleys. Most children want to come home to escape school but
Harry has the opposite feelings. Harry has strict rules when at home but has much more
freedom when he gets to school. Harry even explains that his stomach aches because
he misses the school so much.

2. Give one word that explains Vernon Dursley's reaction when Harry says
"magic" in Chapter One. Explain why you have given this word.

Irrational. Vernon Dursley does not take into consideration the fact that the word is not
referring to the practice of magic. Any mention of it and he becomes angry and yells
loudly. Since the word is used he even accuses Harry of threatening Dudley just
because he says the word. The reader sees that even his physical appearance shows
the signs of his reaction since his temples begins to throb and he jumps up out of his
chair.

3. Describe the difference between the treatment that Harry and Dudley receive
from Petunia and Vernon Dursley as outlined in Chapter One.

Dudley is the perfect son to the Dursleys. They tell Harry that he is abnormal and an
embarrassment. Dudley is permitted to taunt Harry and tease him without
repercussions. If Harry threatens Dudley or teases him back the Durlsey's take it as a
death threat and punish Harry very harshly. In addition, Dudley is described as being fat
but his mother feeds him great amounts of food while Harry is given chores and a piece
of cheese and bread for his supper.

4. In Chapter One there is something worrying Harry regarding Hogwarts. What is

it?

Harry is concerned because he has not received any mail from any of his friends. He
had expected to hear from at least Ron and Hermione but throughout the summer Harry

has not received one letter from either of them. Since he is in the Dursley's house
without a friend he has become concerned that maybe he does not have any at
Hogwarts either.

5. Describe Dobby the House Elf's character when he arrives in Chapter Two.

Dobby wears a piece of clothing that looks more like an old ugly pillow case than actual
clothing. He appears to have been treated badly and treats himself badly if he feels that
he might do something that would be against the family that owns him. Dobby appears
to want to help Harry Potter but is torn between the family that he serves, even though
they are not good people, and helping Harry. Dobby seems to be of low intelligence and
he tries to help Harry without revealing too much about the wizarding family involved in
the conspiracy. Since he tries to hold so much information secret and reveal at the
same time Dobby often seems to give riddles and vague warnings.

6. From what Dobby tells Harry in Chapter Two there is danger waiting at
Hogwarts although he does not explain to Harry what that danger is. Do you think
that Dobby could have told Harry anything that would have kept him from leaving
the Durlseys and returning to Hogwarts? Explain.

No. Harry desperately wants to get away from the Dursleys. Although Harry realizes that
Lord Voldemort is dangerous, Harry cannot think of anything worse than remaining with
the Dursleys and away from Hogwarts. Harry also believes that very little can happen
that would be very bad if Dumbledore remains the Headmaster of Hogwarts.

7. Explain why Vernon Dursley is so excited to receive the letter from the
Improper Use of Magic Office after Dobby breaks Petunia's pudding dessert in
Chapter Two.

Vernon Dursley does not realize that Harry is not allowed to use magic outside of the
school. Vernon has kept a strict line on Harry but believes that Harry has some power
that he is able to use. When he finds that Harry is unable to retaliate magically, Vernon
bars the windows on Harry's room and locks him inside. Vernon and Petunia allow Harry
out to use the restroom but for no other reason.

71
8. In Chapter Two Harry has a dream that he is in locked in a cage. Explain how
the dream explains his situation and his feelings.

He is locked in a cage in his dream and he is locked in his room in real life. Harry has a
sign on his cage that says "Underage Wizard." While Harry seems to enjoy the thought
of being a wizard, he also realizes that this is the same thing that keeps him in some
trouble. If he were not a wizard, things might be different, and when he is a wizard, he
seems to realize things will be different, but being an underage wizard keeps him
between the two. Dobby appears in his dream and refuses to help Harry because he
says that Harry is safe in the cage. Harry realizes that he might be safe from what is
happening at Hogwarts but it is little comfort to him and at this point in time he cannot
see anything being any worse than where he is.

9. Describe Fred and George and their appearance in Chapter Three.

Fred and George are Ron's older brothers. Fred and George are twins and are capable
of magic but have taken the time to learn tricks that Muggles, non magic people, use
such as picking locks. They appear to be very crafty and enjoy a good joke. They are
able to get Harry's school items out of the locked hallway closet and free Harry's owl,
Hedwig, from her cage into which Vernon has locked her.

10. Describe the reaction Vernon has when he realizes that Harry is escaping with
Ron and his brothers. Do you think his reaction is odd? Why or why not.

Vernon is upset that Harry is getting away. He tries to stop Harry from escaping but is
unable. It seems odd that he does not want Harry to go since the Dursleys appear to
dislike him so much and have had him locked up in his room. Although the Dursleys
dislike Harry, it is possible that Vernon does not want Harry to leave because he wants
to continue to punish him.

11. Describe the Weasley house.

The Weasleys are a large family and all the members are magical. Two of their sons are
grown and have left home but there are still four boys and a girl named Ginny, the
youngest. The house is filled with magical items such as a clock that tells you what you
should be doing and the dishes clean themselves. It is a poor family but they care for
each other and make Harry feel very much at home.

72
12. Describe Ginny Weasley.

Ginny has red hair like the rest of the Weasleys. She is the youngest in the house and
appears to be rather quiet but Ron lets Harry know that she talks about Harry
constantly. Ron tells Harry that she is not really shy at all but she does not talk much
around Harry and peers at him from behind doors and leaves the room whenever he is
present.

13. Describe Mr. and Mrs. Weasley.

Mr. Weasley is very interested in all things Muggle and constantly asks Harry about
different things that they use or do. Mr. Weasley asks to sit next to Harry at the table so
that they can engage in such conversations. Mrs. Weasley is very stern, unlike her
husband, but constantly worries that the kids might be hungry or that someone needs a
sweater or a fresh pair of socks. They do not have much money and worry some about
it but the lack of money seems to be a side thought.

14. Explain how Harry feels about the fortune that his parents left him that is held
in Gringotts in London.

He seems unsure of how to mention it. He knows that the Weasleys do not have much
money and so he does not want to mention the fact that he has some. He also has not
mentioned it to the Dursleys because he knows that while they hate him, they probably
would not hate his money. Harry seems to avoid thinking or speaking about it to anyone.

15. What does Harry see while he is hiding in the Borgin and Burkes Shop on
Knockturn Alley.

Harry sees Lucius Malfoy and Draco Malfoy come into the shop to sell some items that
Lucius Malfoy does not want to be found with if the ministry does raids. Lucius tells the
owner of the shop that these are the last items he has that are dark items. When Lucius
Malfoy leaves, the man that owns the store states that he knows that Lucius Malfoy has
many more items pertaining to the dark arts.

16. Describe Gilderoy Lockhart.

Gilderoy Lockhart loves to have his picture taken and be the center of attention. He

73
wants attention and takes advantage of the situation at hand to get it. He poses for
pictures with Harry Potter at his book signing and then announces that he will be the
new teacher at Hogwarts for the Defense Against the Dark Arts. He takes a lot of time
on his appearance and all of his books have him on the front cover. Most of the people
in line to get his books are women.

17. Describe the Ford Anglia that Mr. Weasley has enchanted and how it drives in
Chapter Five when Ron drives it to Hogwarts.

The car has been enchanted by Mr. Weasley so that it flies and also magically has more
room inside it than it appears. The car is old and the mechanism that makes it invisible
continually goes on and off while Ron and Harry are flying it. The car does not quite
make it to Hogwarts before it crashes. The enchantment put on the car seems to have
made it almost alive and it ejects Ron and Harry after the ordeal is over and runs away
of its own will.

18. Describe Serverous Snape and the description that Ron and Harry give him in
Chapter Five.

Snape is described as a teacher that is only nice to the students that are in Slytherin
House. He is mean spirited and enjoys it when Harry and his friends are in trouble. He
wants the Defense Against the Dark Arts job but has not been able to get it. He is the
potions teacher and is thin with black hair.

19. What are the things that Professor Snape tells Ron and Harry they are in
trouble for doing?

Ron and Harry are in trouble for using the magical car. There are several different
sightings of the car due to the fact that the invisibility cloak does not always work. The
Evening Prophet newspaper has the story of the sightings by Muggles. Snape also
explains that the tree that they crash into is no ordinary tree but a Whomping Willow.

20. What is the reaction that Harry and Ron receive from the other students in the
Gryffindor House when they enter it after leaving Professor McGonagall's office in
Chapter Five?

Hermione is upset with them as is Ron's older brother Percy. With the exception of

74
these two, the rest of the Gryffindor House is very excited that they fly a car to school.
There are students telling them that no one has ever done such a thing before and they
cannot believe that Harry and Ron have not been expelled. Ron's brothers, George and
Fred, ask why they could not fly in the car also as if it were a big joke. Harry and Ron go
to bed quickly to avoid Percy's lecture as well as Hermione's, but go to sleep very happy
with the reaction that they have received from the other students.

21. What are some of the effects of the Howler letter that Ron's mother sends him
in Chapter Six?

The letter screams loudly at Ron in front of everyone which causes further
embarrassment. The Howler letter has to be opened immediately so Ron has no choice
but to open it in front of the whole room. In the letter Mrs. Weasley explains that Mr.
Weasley is going through an inquiry at work because of the car and this causes Harry
some grief because the Weasleys have been so good to him. The good part of the
Howler arriving is that Hermione seems to forgive Ron after he is put through the public
embarrassment and begins acting more civil to them.

22. In Chapter Five what does Gilderoy Lockhart say is the cause for Harry flying
the car to school?

He believes the reason is because Harry wants more publicity. He tells Harry that he
blames himself for giving Harry that first taste of fame and that he knows that Harry just
wants his face in the paper again. He tells Harry that when he was a boy that he was
even "more of a nobody" than Harry is and that this will all change if Harry just gives it
time. He does not give Harry a chance to explain what has happened or the reasons for
flying the car.

23. Describe the type of student that Hermione is from the description given in
Chapter Six.

Hermione is the first one to have her hand in the air to answer a question. She enjoys
class and studies very hard. Her answers are thorough and correct. Ron and Harry
have a difficult time transforming their beetles into buttons but Hermione is able to
transform a handful of them. Hermione has a very strong opinion of wrong and right.

75
24. Describe what happens in Gilderoy Lockhart's first class in Chapter Six. What
does this reveal about his character?

In his first class he begins to explain about all his great accomplishments. After a short
period of time he loses a cage of Cornish pixies. Lockhart is unable to control the little
animals and leaves the room and Hermione is the one that is able to cast a charm on
them to stop them from wreaking havoc. Gilderoy Lockhart shows in this piece that he
may very well be as incompetent as he appears. He boasts about his abilities but is
unable to do anything to prove them despite his books. Ron states out loud that the only
proof that anyone has that he did any of the things he said he did is the fact that he
wrote about it in books.

25. Explain the relationship between Collin Creevey and Harry Potter as seen in
Chapter Seven.

Collin follows Harry most everywhere he goes if Collin is able. Harry gets up early for
Quidditch practice and Collin is already up looking for Harry and follows him. Collin
appears to have hero worship in reference to Harry. Harry is polite to Collin but is
exasperated by the fact that he is followed so persistently.

26. Draco Malfoy calls Hermione a Mudblood in Chapter Seven. Given the reaction
to what is said, explain the significance of the term and what its description
would be.

Mudblood is a prejudice term used to insult a person. The term refers to the fact that if
you have Muggle blood in your family, then your blood is tainted and not pure. Hence
the term "mud" for the dirty state of your blood. It is more than a mild offense and is
taken very seriously by those that hear it. It is a word that is used by those that feel that
pure blood makes them better but all others refuse to use the term because it has such
a derogatory meaning.

27. McGonagall finds Harry and Ron and tells them what their detention
punishment will be. Harry will help Lockhart sign his fan mail and Ron will polish
trophies without using magic. Are these detentions appropriate for them? Why or
why not?

Yes, because Ron hates to do anything like cleaning without the use of magic. He
knows that he will be kept all night without the aid of his wand to speed things. Harry
really dislikes Lockhart and Lockhart seems to have focused on Harry because it

76
increases Lockhart's own popularity. For both of the boys there is little else that could
have been better suited as a punishment. Both of them feel as if they have the worst
end of the deal.

28. Explain Harry's reaction when he hears the voice in Chapter Seven while
serving detention.

Harry is concerned and confused. The voice had been talking about killing people and
ripping people. While this is worrisome to Harry, he appears just as concerned by the
fact that Lockhart cannot hear the voice. He and Ron run through a list of why it could
have only been heard by him but come up with no answers.

29. Describe Mr. Filch from the description given when he takes Harry into his
office in Chapter Eight. Why does he let Harry go without punishment?

Mr. Filch is the caretaker at Hogwarts. He has a cat named Mrs. Norris. Mr. Filch does
not like students and tries to punish Harry for tracking mud into the castle after Harry
comes in out of the rain. The thing that most likely got Harry out of any trouble is that
Harry finds a piece of Filch's mail that Filch would have been embarrassed for anyone
else to see. He most likely lets Harry go so that no one will find out about his letter.

30. Describe the Deathday party for Nearly Headless Nick.

The room is very cold and filled with floating apparitions. When Harry arrives, he finds
the food there is rotten and moldy. Nearly Headless Nick gives Harry some things to say
to another ghost that Nearly Headless Nick wants to impress. Harry and Ron are
introduced to Moaning Myrtle.

31. What is the reaction from those that find the petrified cat and the message on
the wall stating that the heir of Slytherin has returned?

Everyone is completely quiet and stops to look at the message. Ron has tried to get
Harry to hurry up and leave so that they will not be the ones found at the scene but they
are unable to leave before others arrive. Draco Malfoy is loud and openly happy about
the fact that the Muggles in the school are in danger.

77
32. What is confusing to Harry when he hears the voice in the hall before they find
the petrified cat?

The voice moves and Harry cannot determine the source of the voice. He tries to figure
out if the voice is coming from a phantom or a ghost. He realizes that whatever is
making the voice is moving through the ceilings and walls and he knows that it would
take more than being invisible to travel this way.

33. What is Filch's reaction when he finds Mrs. Norris, his cat, petrified?

Mr. Filch is grieving over his cat but is sure that Harry did it. He tells Harry that if Harry
killed his cat, he will kill Harry. Dumbledore looks the cat over and announces that the
cat has not been killed, but only petrified, and that Harry does not have the skills to
perform such magic. Mr. Filch then explains that Harry sees his mail and that he is a
Squib. Harry does not know what a Squib is but it is explained that a Squib is the
opposite of a Mudblood. A Squib is a person that has magic parents but cannot perform
magic.

34. Why does Harry not tell the professors about the voice he hears?

He is concerned as to what it may mean. His friends back him up telling him that even
when you are a wizard, it is not good to hear voices you cannot explain. The voice has
been heard by Harry twice but he refuses to tell Dumbledore about the voice.

35. What does Professor Binns tell the students about the Chamber of Secrets?

Professor Binns is focused on facts and he tells the students that he believes the whole
thing to be a tale of pure fiction. He explains about the wizards that started the
Hogwarts school including Salazar Slytherin. Slytherin believed that magical teaching
should stay in magical families and he told the students that because of this he made a
secret chamber with a beast in it although there has been a search and no chamber is
found. The monster in the chamber is supposed to be something that only the heir of
Slytherin can control although no one knows what it is.

78
36. Who do Harry, Ron, and Hermione seem to think would be a possibility for the
Heir Slytherin in Chapter Nine and why?

Draco Malfoy is who they think might either be the heir or know who the heir is. Draco's
father hates all Muggles and Draco does too. Harry has seen Lucius and Draco at
Knockturn Alley selling dark magic items. Ron believes that they might have handed
things down generation-to-generation that would allow them to open the chamber.

37. Explain how Hermione, Ron and Harry get Lockhart to sign a permission form
for them to retrieve a book from the restricted section of the library.

Lockhart is very self absorbed and Hermione tells him that she wants to do background
research on one of his books so that she can better understand how he defeated one of
his nemeses. Lockhart does not even look at what book it is and does not ask why she
needs that particular book. Harry had been doing all the things that Lockhart asked him
even though Harry does not want to do them.

38. What are the pros and cons of the Polyjuice Potion that Hermione, Ron and
Harry intend to brew?

The down side to the potion is that it will take a month to brew and they will be breaking
several school rules in making it. They will have to make it in Moaning Myrtle's
bathroom to ensure privacy. The potion will require a bit of whoever they intend to turn
into which makes Ron uneasy and many of the ingredients will have to be stolen from
Professor Snape's closet. The positive side of making the Polyjiuce Potion is that it will
give them an answer as to whether it is Draco Malfoy committing the attacks and, if not,
they believe he may know who is behind it.

39. What does Dobby reveal to Harry when he comes to see him in the hospital
wing in Chapter Ten?

Dobby reveals that he is the one that closed the gate to Platform Nine and Three
Quarters when Ron and Harry were trying to catch the train. Dobby is also the one that
makes the bludger go after Harry that almost kills him. Dobby also tells Harry the reason
that he wears the nasty looking pillowcase is because if he is ever given a piece of
clothing he would be freed from his slavery. He also reveals to Harry that the Chamber
of Secrets has been opened before although he does not tell Harry when it happened.

79
40. What does Harry hear while lying in the hospital wing when Dumbledore
brings in a petrified Collin Creevey?

Dumbledore admits that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened again. Harry also
hears that they tried to open Collin's camera to see if he got a picture of his attacker but
the camera film produced smoke and was destroyed. Dumbledore says the question is
not who has opened the Chamber of Secrets but how they have opened it, and Harry
realizes that Professor McGonagall does not have any more answers than Harry does.

41. Why does Hermione volunteer to sneak into Professor Snape's storeroom?

They need ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion that are not available to students.
Hermione explains that she has not been in any trouble but that both Ron and Harry
cannot get caught doing anything else. She tells them that if they keep Snape busy she
will sneak in and retrieve the items they need.

42. How does Harry distract Snape while Hermione retrieves the needed
ingredients?

He sets off one of George and Fred's Filibuster fireworks. When the fireworks goes off,
it lands in Goyle's cauldron of brewing potion and a large amount lands on Draco
Malfoy. The potion stinks, and when it lands on Malfoy, he begins to swell up like a
balloon. Snape is busy trying to calm people and fix the problem when Hermione
sneaks past him.

43. What happens when Draco Malfoy produces a snake during dueling class in
Chapter Eleven?

Harry does not realize it but he is able to speak snake language. It is the language that
Slytherin had used and this language ability convinces people that Harry is his long lost
heir. Harry tells the snake not to attack a boy there but no one can understand him and
they all think he is encouraging the snake to attack.

44. What are the students saying about Harry after they find he can speak to
snakes like Salazar Slytherin?

Many of the students are saying that Harry is a relative of Salazar Slytherin. Some of

80
the students are talking about the fact that the reason that Voldemort goes after Harry is
because he is afraid Harry will be as strong a wizard as he is and do not want another
dark wizard for competition. Harry tries to convince some that it is not true but they are
too scared of him to even talk to him.

45. What happens to the phoenix in Dumbledore's office while Harry is waiting on
Dumbledore in Chapter Twelve?

The bird looks sickly, makes a gagging noise, and after a moment, bursts into flames.

46. What does Dumbledore tell Harry while in his office in Chapter Twelve?

Dumbledore tells Harry that he knows that Harry is not responsible for the attacks. He
asks Harry if there is something he would like to tell Dumbledore but Harry refuses to
tell him about the voice that he hears.

47. What are some of the presents Harry gets for Christmas?

The Dursleys send Harry a toothpick with a note asking if he can stay at the school over
summer vacation and Mrs. Weasley sends Harry a sweater and a plum cake. Ron gets
Harry a book about Quidditch.

48. What goes wrong with Hermione's portion of the Polyjuice Potion?

It transforms her into part cat and gives her fur and a tail. Hermione must have gotten
cat hair instead of the Slytherin girl's hair to put into the potion and the potion is not for
animal transformations.

49. In Chapter Thirteen why has Moaning Myrtle flooded the bathroom and been
crying?

Someone drops a book into her head. She tells Harry and Ron that she is thinking about
death and someone threw a book through her head.

81
50. How does Gilderoy Lockhart plan to boost the school moral in Chapter
Thirteen?

Gilderoy Lockhart decorates with a Valentine's theme with pink flowers decorating the
walls of the Great Hall. Lockhart also commissions dwarfs to deliver Valentines to the
students.

51. Who are the two people removed from the school in Chapter Fourteen? What
happens to them?

Hagrid and Dumbledore are removed from the school on the same night. Hagrid is
taken away to Azkaban prison and Dumbledore is forced to take a suspension.

52. What happens to Hermione in Chapter Fourteen?

She goes to the library telling Ron and Harry she is going to look for something. She is
found petrified a short time later holding a mirror along with another girl.

53. What do Harry and Ron find when they follow the spiders into the Forbidden
Forest?

There is a giant spider living in the forest named Aragog. Aragog was raised by Hagrid
and is the reason that Haggrid was expelled when he was younger.

54. What does Aragog tell Harry and Ron about the creature from the Chamber of
Secrets?

Aragog says that the creature is feared above all else by spiders and that they cannot
speak its name. Aragog also tells them that Hagrid is not the one that loosed the
monster the first time but took the blame to keep Aragog safe.

82
55. What do Harry and Ron find in Hermione's hand when they go to visit her in
the hospital wing in chapter Sixteen?

Harry and Ron fine a piece of paper describing a Basilisk. Hermione also writes the
word "pipes" on the paper to explain what the creature in the chamber is and how it gets
around.

56. What do Harry and Ron overhear the teachers talking about in Chapter
Sixteen regarding the Chamber of Secrets?

Ginny Weasley has been kidnapped and there is a note on the wall saying that she will
lie dead in the chamber forever. Professor McGonagall says that the school will have to
be closed and they volunteer Lockhart to go after the monster and save the girl.

57. When Harry gets to the Chamber of Secrets in Chapter Seventeen what does
Tom Riddle tell him?

Tom says that Ginny is not dead but soon will be and that he is Lord Voldemort. He tells
Harry he had to meet him because he wanted to know how he escaped the most
powerful wizard that ever lived. Tom has been attacking the Muggles in the school but
Harry has become his new target.

58. What happens when Harry tells Tom Riddle that Dumbledore is the greatest
wizard that ever lived and that people will always be faithful to Dumbledore.

Dumbeldore's phoenix arrives carrying the sorting hat and drops the hat at Harry's feet.
Harry puts the hat on and the Gryffindor sword appears out of the hat. The phoenix
attacks the Basilisk for Harry plucking out its eyes and then heals Harry's wounds.

59. What happens when Harry gives Lucius Malfoy the diary that belonged to Tom
Riddle?

Lucius throws it at his servant Dobby and when Dobby opens the book, there is a sock
in it and he is allowed his freedom. Lucius tries to attack Harry but Dobby protects him.

83
60. What does Dumbledore tell Harry regarding his likeness to Voldemort?

Harry most likely got some of Voldemorts traits when he attacked Harry unknown to
Voldemort. The difference between the two of them is the choices they make.

Moaning Myrtle

219
Short Essay Answer Key

2. Describe Gilderoy Lockhart.

Gilderoy Lockhart loves to have his picture taken and be the center of attention. He
wants attention and takes advantage of the situation at hand to get it. He poses for
pictures with Harry Potter at his book signing and then announces that he will be the
new teacher at Hogwarts for the Defense Against the Dark Arts. He takes a lot of time
on his appearance and all of his books have him on the front cover. Most of the people
in line to get his books are women.

4. What is the reaction that Harry and Ron receive from the other students in the
Gryffindor House when they enter it after leaving Professor McGonagall's office in
Chapter Five?

Hermione is upset with them as is Ron's older brother Percy. With the exception of
these two, the rest of the Gryffindor House is very excited that they fly a car to school.
There are students telling them that no one has ever done such a thing before and they

220
cannot believe that Harry and Ron have not been expelled. Ron's brothers, George and
Fred, ask why they could not fly in the car also as if it were a big joke. Harry and Ron go
to bed quickly to avoid Percy's lecture as well as Hermione's, but go to sleep very happy
with the reaction that they have received from the other students.

Harry
really dislikes Lockhart and Lockhart seems to have focused on Harry because it
increases Lockhart's own popularity. For both of the boys there is little else that could
have been better suited as a punishment. Both of them feel as if they have the worst
end of the deal.

221
because he says the word. The reader sees that even his physical appearance shows
the signs of his reaction since his temples begins to throb and he jumps up out of his
chair.

Short Essay Answer Key

234
freedom when he gets to school. Harry even explains that his stomach aches because
he misses the school so much.

235
seems to realize things will be different, but being an underage wizard keeps him
between the two. Dobby appears in his dream and refuses to help Harry because he
says that Harry is safe in the cage. Harry realizes that he might be safe from what is
happening at Hogwarts but it is little comfort to him and at this point in time he cannot
see anything being any worse than where he is.

236

Dobby also tells Harry the reason

of Secrets has been opened before although he does not tell Harry when it happened.

ingredients?

He sets off one of George and Fred's Filibuster fireworks. When the fireworks goes off,
it lands in Goyle's cauldron of brewing potion and a large amount lands on Draco
Malfoy. The potion stinks, and when it lands on Malfoy, he begins to swell up like a
balloon. Snape is busy trying to calm people and fix the problem when Hermione
sneaks past him.

4. What happens when Harry tells Tom Riddle that Dumbledore is the greatest
wizard that ever lived and that people will always be faithful to Dumbledore.

they all think he is encouraging the snake to attack.
