Art, War, and the Holocaust

Make your own piece of artwork about the Holocaust. You may write a poem or song, drawing, collage, or a
combination of different styles. Creativity is encouraged. Remember, your piece must reflect some
aspect of the Holocaust and demonstrate your understanding of it. Use the techniques demonstrated in
the songs and artwork in your assignment.

EXPLANATION: You must attach a one paragraph explanation to your art. You must explain how it relates
to the Holocaust.
Helpful Hints:
• Recall a “scene” of something you learned about the Holocaust or WWII. Use the scene or situation
to base your lyrics or art off of.
• What symbols/metaphors could be used to represent different aspects of the war?
• Hitler? Auschwitz? The Ghetto? Schindler? Resistance?
• Look over your vocabulary and worksheets. Use the terms for rhyming or artistic interpretation.

Poetic Devices:
• Alliteration - repetition of an initial sound in two or more words of a phrase (e.g., Billy builds big
houses with beige bricks.)
• Metaphor - a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken of as if it were another (e.g., )
• Repetition - use of a word or phrase to create rhythm or add emphasis (e.g., Are you joking? Are
you serious? Are you telling me the truth?)
• Rhyme - correspondence in the sounds of two or more lines (especially final sounds) (e.g., Sitting
by the sea I thought about you and me.)
• Simile - comparison of one thing with another, using as or like (e.g., She’ll probably win
tomorrow’s race. She runs like a gazelle.)

Possible Projects: Poster, Collage, Song (record!), Video, Poem, Sculpture, Photography (your own)
