d) Recapitulation

A. Pre reading
1. Activating prior knowledge
Before we proceed to our lesson, I
would like to watch this video. While
watching I want you to jot down notes
so you can answer these questions:
- What kind of struggles was
shown in this video?
- Give the video a title and
explain why?

explain why?
What if men were pregnant?
2. Unlocking of Difficulties
Before we discuss his story, let us first
give meaning to the difficult or
unfamiliar words we encountered in
that story.

Without resorting to a dictionary or to

Israel, I know he has a wide range of
vocabulary, what do we do when we
want to know the meaning of the
word?
Sir we use context clues.

Power point presentation – context

clues activity

Vocabulary Development

1) wallow

Lovely do you know the definition of

this word?
No sir.
Ok then stand up and let’s figure it out
together.

“Our carabao likes wallowing in the

shallow lake to keep cool in a hot
summer’s day.”

Presents pictures
Sir, they like chilling in the water sir.
Exactly! Chilling or relaxing in water!

Now everybody read the definition

and example
(chiefly of large mammals) roll about
or lie relaxed in mud or water,
especially to keep cool, or avoid biting
insects.
To spend time experiencing or
enjoying something without making
any effort to change your situation,
feelings, stc.

“His tether stretched as far as it could

go, the bull carabao panted in the
sun, his head turned longingly toward
the Waig where other carabaos
wallowed in the cold mud”.

Excellent! Now next word!

2) Stout
“The stout fireman ran through the
hallway, carrying an injured civilian on
his back.”
Sir, I think means strong and brave! or
Excellent! Big and wide sir!
Everyone read

Having a large body that is wide with

fat or muscles; or
Now read the example from the text Brave and strong

“She chewed betel-nut rolled in a leaf

of the gawed plant with a pinch of
lime, and the ground under the
window where she and mother sat
talking would be streaked with many
red stains from old woman’s ceaseless
3) Ceaseless spitting.”
I could not stop it! The ceaseless
requirements in school were piling up.
All I could do was whine and cry
instead of actually doing it.
I think sir, something that is hard to
stop!
Okay, what is something that doesn’t
stop?
Going on forever
Acceptable answer!
Everbody the accurate definition
constant and unending.
Now read the example from the text
“She chewed betel-nut rolled in a leaf
of the gawed plant with a pinch of
lime, and the ground under the
window where she and mother sat
talking would be streaked with many
red stains from old woman’s ceaseless
spitting.”
4) locusts
The ceaseless increase in locusts can
cause damages to the crops. It is such
an annoying pest!
Hmm, sir some kind of insect!
Good guess, specify what kind ?
Grasshopper
Very good!
Now read
A type of grasshopper that travels in
very large groups and that can cause
great destruction by eating crops

And the example “It was the year the locusts came and
ate the young rice fields, leaving only
raw stumps that had to be plowed
under again to make way for a
second planting”

5) Talunasan

“Leslie uses her rusted talunasan and

strikes the branch of the tree to slice it
in half. Sir, some kind of sword.

Very good some kind of machete A machete.

Now read “He was all for whipping us, saying we
two were useless, shameless sons of
lightning and he should skin us alive
with leather scabbard of his
talunasan.”

Excellent now why do you think I

included an Ilokano dialect there?
Sir, because Manuel Arguilla is an
Ilokano
Wow very good Carlson, you really did
read the text!

Author’s background
Manuel Estabilla Arguilla was an
Ilokano writer in English, patriot, and
martyr.
He is commonly known for his short
story "How My Brother Leon Brought
Home a Wife," the main story in the
collection How My Brother Leon
Brought Home a Wife and Other Short
Stories, which won first prize in the
Commonwealth Literary Contest in
1940.

He studied in University of the

Philippines.
Died during the Second World War

B. Developing a purpose for

reading
1. Motivation question:

What is the earliest memory you have

with your mother?
Sir, I was in a park, she was feeding me
something.
Sir, I was playing with her my Barbie
doll.

2. Motive question:
What do you think your mother went
through while being pregnant with
you? Cramps
Urinary frequency - needing to pass
urine often
Urinary stress incontinence - leaking
urine
Heartburn and indigestion
Blocked nose
Varicose veins - swollen leg veins
Varicose veins in the genital area
Constipation and haemorrhoids
Backache
Vaginal thrush
Infections (influenza, chickenpox,
shingles, slapped face, whooping
cough)

C. During Reading
1. Presentation
For this lesson, we are expected to:
- Highlight motherhood by
identifying the struggles of
pregnancy
- Anticipate the events of the
story using a storyboard and
tableau activity
- Noting the lack of conflicts in
the story
- Identify the relationship of past
and past perfect tense using
varied context.

2. Discussion integrated with

Engagement activity.
Who are the characters in the story?
Baldo, Berting, mother, Father, and
TiaAccol, and Peddong.
What was the setting of the story?
At a farm, long time ago

(Explain what tableau is)

a group of models or motionless
figures representing a scene from a
story or from history; a tableau vivant.

(Show examples)

Tableau activity mechanics:

- Divide the class into groups
- Each group should have at
least five members
- Students should predict the
significant part of the chapter
by making a tableau modelled
after that scene.
- Two minutes will be given to
form the tableau
- Each team should remain
motionless for another one
minute
- The facilitator will take pictures
of each tableau

Each tableau is modelled after a

chapter in the story.
- After the tableau a story board
which represents the significant
part of the story will be
presented

(Students will check if they made an

accurate tableau)

After, students will sit and go back to

discussion.

(Remembering) In the beginning of

Chapter one, what are the events in Sir, their father went to Santiago to
the story? work and Baldo and Berting instead of
working out in the fields, went out and
played with their friends

What did they play?

Tangga y cruz
Hole in
So since they did not cut the hay, who
did it?
Their mother
After that, what happened?
Berting and Baldo ate, and mother fed
the pig.
(Understanding) What would you feel
if you were in Baldo’s situation? you
see your mother very tired from the
work that you should have done by
yourself.
Shame and regret
How will make it up to her?
Sir, doing my chores and studying
Ok before we move onto the next the hard.
chapter, with the given rubric as your
guide, I want you to score on the
tableaus of all the groups; I will flash
their pictures here on board for 10
seconds only.

Next make a tableau for Chapter two,

now this you can add an element of
one person looping an action.
I will give 3 minutes go
(Groups makes tableaus)
(take pictures/ 5 second videos of all
groups)
(Flash storyboad)

Okay everybody take their seats

(Remembering) What happened in

Chapter two? Sir, they were cutting the hay all night,
and Berting cut his finger, Mother
stayed at home
What was the mother’s condition?
She was getting heavier and bigger
because of the baby inside her.

Who was the Tia that often visit them

to ask about their mother’s condition
Tia Accol
What did she assume that the baby’s
physical traits will be?
Stout sir!
Good the baby will be stout she
predicted.

(Understanding) Near the end when

father and mother were talking and
Baldo overheard them.
“We planted 1500 seedlings,” said my
father with great satisfaction. “Almost
twice as many as we planted last
year.”
“If only the price of leaf tobacco
doesn’t go down any further,” I heard
my mother say, and her voice
sounded so tired.
What do you think this implies?
Sir, that farming is difficult profession,
and also has very low income.
Didn’t you notice there situation is still
relevant today?
Farmers still experience these
struggles, especially of the Rice
Tarrification Law.
(Application) What are solutions that
you can think of that may help our
farmers today? Instead foreign products we should
give a higher priority to our local
products to help local farmers.

Ok before we move onto the next the

chapter, with the given rubric as your
guide, I want you to score on the
tableaus of all the groups; I will flash
their pictures here on board for 10
seconds only
Very Good! Next tableau about
Chapter 3. Here’s the twist you can
make sound effects and also another
looping action.

You have 3 minutes. Go!

(Groups make their tableau)
(Flash storyboard)
(take pictures/ 5 second videos of all
groups)

Every sit down.

Can someone please summarize the
events in Chapter 3.
Sir, their brought home molave leaves
for their mother.
They went to Missa De Gallo.
Excellent!
(Analysis) Missa De Gallo is familiar to
us Filipinos, especially the Roman
Catholics. Now I want you to compare
and contrast how different cultures or
religion celebrate their festivities or
their religious events against how
Catholics celebrate Christmas.
For us Muslims sir, we celebrate our
kind of Christmas during Eid Al Fitr. We
eat many food and share gifts just like
in Christmas.
Ok before we move onto the next the
chapter, with the given rubric as your
guide, I want you to score on the
tableaus of all the groups; I will flash
their pictures here on board for 10
seconds only
Very Good! Next tableau about
Chapter 4. Now here you can I will
allow to add an element of
background music or song by singing
the song yourself.
Another 3 minutes to prepare, go!
(Groups make their tableau)
(Flash storyboard)
(take pictures/ 10 second videos of all
groups)

When did the birth happen?

Day before Christmas sir.
How did you know it was the day
before Christmas Sir, they cooked suman and prepared
for Pascua and it was mentioned in the
story
Okay during the birth, why did Tia
Accol ask for the ampalaya leaves? Sir, so that the baby will find the milk
sweeter.
And of course, what did they name
their child? Jesus
(Evaluating) How did the author,
Manuel Arguilla, highlighted
motherhood throughout the story? He highlighted it by the showing a
hard-working mother despite being
pregnant
How did he portray the life of Filipino
farmers at those times? He told it by describing how simple
their life was, how they celebrate
Christmas with sumans, and lechon.
That they Missa De Gallo is almost part
of our culture.
Very Good!

Manuel Arguilla’s stories might be in

English. Although it is so much more
about Filipinos. It is dense with Filipino
culture and tradition. He was able to
highlight motherhood through this
simple story, and also give light into
the ceaseless spirit of Christmas, that
Filipinos possess.
Very timely, don’t you think? Yes sir.

Now let’s have a quick summarization

on the chapters of the story.

(Summarize the chapters)

D. Post Reading

Now last question, So if she gave birth

at midnight, let us assume she had
completed the task of cooking the
suman before giving birth.

(post a timeline in whiteboard)

Since this is a story we can say it all

happened in the past between those
two events.

PAST PRESENT

(Indicate both past actions in the

timeline)

“She cooked suman”

“She gave birth”

Both are in simple past, in order to

show the relationship between these
two events in past we have to change
the one which was completed first, we
all know that she completed cooking
first before giving birth. So we change
the sentence to:

“She had cooked suman”.

She + had + past participle
What do you call this?
Past perfect tense sir.
Very good.
When do we use past perfect tense?
When an action is completed.
That is true but if it is in simple past it
could also imply that the action is
completed too?
“She cooked suman”
That could also mean the action is
completed right. So, therefore a better
definition for past perfect tense is?
We use it sir to express an action
completed in relation to another
action which is more recent in the
past.

Very good! When you’re talking about

some point in the past and want to
reference an event that happened
even earlier,
Don’t forget to use a conjunction so
the sentence will be:

“She had cooked suman before she

gave birth.”

1. Written practice

Now I have these pictures and I will

post it on the timeline, and you must
form sentences to show the
relationship between past and past
perfect tense.

(Post picture in the timeline)

She had eaten before she ran.

(Post another set of pictures in the
timeline) He had studied already before I came
home
Now write your own sentence. And
share it to the class

2. Oral practice

Now I will post another set of pictures

or keywords.

Instead of writing you will say it.

(Post set of pictures in timeline)
The teacher had taught us the lesson
already before I she arrived
(Post another set picture in timeline)
The student had left the school before
the sports event started
Very good!

E. Generalization
Before we go,

When do we use past perfect tense

again?
When we want to show that event or
action has been completed already
before another event or action in the
past
And I also leave you with this,
Everyone pack your things, put every
book or thing inside your bag, and
strap on your bags frontward.

Stand up, drop your pen and pick it

up. Now run forward and backwards.
Jump! Jump! Jump!

Now you did that for a minute and

you’re already exhausted, imagine
having to do that for 9 months.
Imagine it being heavier, and a lot of
side effects, like varicose veins,
haemorrhoids, cramps, urinary
frequency, heartburn, etc. All those
struggles just to see you being born.
Now make those struggles worth it.
Appreciate your mothers, and love
them while they are still with you.
Yes sir.
F. Application
Write a short essay entitled “Before I hit
25”. This essay must contain things,
goals and achievements you want to
accomplish before reaching the age
of 25. Make sure to incorporate past
perfect tenses in your essay.
