On a monthly basis, we publish an online magazine: The Good Newsletter

– the best source of design and decoration for your party. Twice a year we
publish a Weddings Issue, March and September, and we love to feature Real
Weddings.
We are hoping you would be interested in submitting your wedding day photos (or any of your pre-
wedding party photos). The submission would need to include 15 to 20 of your favourite photos,
covering a wide spectrum of the wedding day, so basically one or two of the bridal couple, bridal
party and wedding venue/party, and for the rest: a strong focus on the wedding design and décor
elements: stationery, ceremony and reception flowers, table design, cake, favours etc. We love the
little details!

Ideally, we would also like a short write up, really only a paragraph or two about the bridal couple
and the wedding, possibly highlighting your favourite wedding day touches and moments; and
recommended vendors.

All submissions will be considered, and we will notify you of the inclusion, as well as send through
jpegs of the final layout for your reference. There is no cost for your submission, and full credit will
be given to you as applicable, equally we do not pay for any submissions, but we will send a little

GOOD ADVICE

Congratulations if you are getting married in 2011! It is a year that promises

both elegance and exoticism from the regal and romantic “royal” wedding to
a vintage throw back to the roaring 1920’s there is something for everyone
and a colour palette to die for.

1. Watercolour Wonder
The colours for 2011 are tropical and fun, but with
a sun dappled look about them. What’s more brides
are combining two and three colours instead of just
one complementing colour. The Pantone Spring 2011
palette has it nailed – think honeysuckle pink, coral
rose, peapod green, beeswax yellow, regatta blue or
a paler (more like the turquoise blue of 2010) - blue
curaco. But for those brides who still long for a lighter
shade of pale there is silver peony, russet, lavender
and silver cloud. It can be key to helping couples save
money while still being able to have everything they
want on their special day.

2. Natural Settings
Outdoor weddings are a big must, indoor weddings
are getting a bit of break, as brides prefer the more
relaxed and comforting feeling an outdoor one has.
But you have been warned, the weather is hard to
predict, so have a plan B.

3. Make Your Own Mark

Do It Yourself became a trend in 2010 with the
economy, and remains for 2011. Couples are first
taking the time to make their wedding reflect their
interests, passions and hobbies – and then building
a wedding style from there. It is these independent
ideas that make the wedding an unforgettable
personal affair and today’s brides want to add little
touches of their own like favours and welcome bags.

20 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za
4. Flapper Finery
Vintage is still hot and anything ‘shabby
chic’, but 2011 will be more opulent and
extravagant than 2010. Take a wedding style
cue from Marie Antoinette and the dapper
fashion of the 1920s, think dusty pink and
nudes, lots of lace, pearls but also peaches
and coral colours and add metallic gold and
silver trims for a bit of sparkle.

Get your guy involved in the wedding

a surprise honeymoon! there is still the option of a preppy chic affair
that exudes the London look. In needn’t be the

Powers swinging 60’s Party - classic and chic plaids
and stripes provide the perfect remix of retro,
preppy sensibility.

But the vibrant and funky theme is ideal for a

pre wedding party – so go the full hog with a
very British street party feel with paper chains,
bunting, union jack paper flags and all things
totally cool!

5. Royal Romantic
With a royal wedding around the corner
everyone is forecasting “fairytale bling”:
crystals, sophisticated sequins and beading
will be showing up everywhere. And not
just on the dress, think floral arrangements
and the wedding cake too. Not to mention
monogrammes, that are sure to reflect the
customs and traditions of the royal family.
7. Exotic Experience

or makeshift sidewalk carts of coffee and
doughnuts – it is sure to be a hit! And for the
main menu itself? Simple, traditional food but
of excellent quality and presented in a very
modern way or with a touch of originality.

9. Wedding.com
What with everyone on Facebook, YouTube,
Twitter, Flickr and Vimeo – your wedding will
naturally be part of it all as well! Keep your
guests informed about the wedding details via
a wedding website or blog, or even just little
posts revealing your excitement and plans to
date. 10. The Green Scene
Couples continue to think green, even if it is in

stationery and local organic food.

classicandcool
Tracey and Clinton celebrated their wedding with a classical affair
held Hazeldene Hall - one of Johannesburg´s old colonial historical
gems. Here Tracey shares her wedding day story:

My style is very much vintage and classic, which is why I fell in love with Hazeldene Hall the
second I saw it. It has a classic colonial architecture and inside it has Victorian touches
such as high pressed metal ceilings, original fireplaces, stained glass windows, crystal
chandeliers and “broekielace” around the veranda. Another of Hazeldene Hall’s claims
to fame is that the iconic SA tale of Jock of the Bushveld was written in its study. The
substantial gardens show off a Victorian glory and reflect the axial approach of symmetry
and balance. A long rectangular pond can be found to the side of the house where we
had floating lanterns and surrounding candles.

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 47
48 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za
For my dress, I knew exactly what
I wanted (my mission was to find
a dress with a big bow around my
waist) and when I saw my dress I
knew that was the one –
it was the only dress I tried on,
and I knew I didn’t need to keep
looking.
My bouquet was a tight bunch of
cream roses with cream ribbon
and pearls wrapped around
the stems. My bridesmaids wore
black long dresses with a bouquet
of white lilies with black ribbon
wrapped around the stems.

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 49
My colour scheme was very neutral, the decor was all white with crystal plates
and pearl crockery, white orchids and lilies for our centre pieces in a long tall
vase. We had a delicious gorgeous all-white candy bar on the balcony full
of coconut ice, fudge white chocolate, marshmallows and truffles. For some
entertainment we had a photo booth where guests could go dress in silly hats
and glasses and scarves and take couple and/or group shots and then each
get a copy of it in an “old school” photo strip.

50 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za
For transport to and from the wedding we had stunning imported stretch cream
Lincolin limos - the only two in South Africa. My father drove me to the venue along
with my two brothers in his Rolls-Royce. For both sides of our families and 50 of our
closest friends we hired limo buses to take them to the wedding and back so they
didn’t have to worry about driving home late at night after the party!

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 51
The food was catered by the well known By Word Of Mouth - they were
excellent! My cake was designed and made by The Cake Genie and it was a
5 tier chocolate and vanilla cake with a black and white damask print.

Our professional photographs we taken by Christopher Munton and he really

bought in an element of that vintage, classical feel to the couple shots at
the venue but he was also able to bring out a fun, unique side with Clintons
individual and groomsmen shots!

GOOD RIDDANCE

As you start to design the decor of your wedding or event, don’t overlook
the many interesting uses for paper lanterns. There are so many sizes,
colours and interesting shapes to choose from and with the use of battery
powered LED lights you can put them anywhere and even keep them
afterwards to decorate your house.
Consider using them as your table centerpieces, for example place your flower arrangements inside
small paper lanterns.
Run a string of lanterns overhead above the table to define the space.
As an aisle marker you can hang them from shepherd hooks at the end of your aisle, or off the back
of chairs just the same way your would use a floral pomander.
You can use the larger paper lanterns at ground level to mark your aisle, add detail, or camouflage
an unsightly area.
One of the prettiest ways to decorate a tent for a wedding reception, or any space for that matter,
is to hang a collections of paper lanterns from the ceiling.

GOOD LIFE
AIMEE AND GRAHAM
HOW WE MET
Graham and I met eight years ago. I was a law student working part-time in
Montblanc in Sandton. Graham walked in to buy a pen refill and walked out with a
watch that I sold to him. Four years later I was a qualified lawyer and Graham was
appointed as an advocate on a matter I was working on by my boss. A few months
later I moved to London to take up an exciting opportunity in the city – Graham
called to wish me good luck. Two years later I was back living in South Africa and
Graham and I bumped into each other at a restaurant. In October 2009 after a few
months of friendship, Graham and I started dating – he proposed in April 2010 and
we were married in August 2010 – my life partner and best friend had been known to
me all along and the universe had finally conspired to bring us together!

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 57
THE PROPOSAL
On Easter Friday in April 2010 Graham and I headed away for the weekend to Magaliesburg. I was
preoccupied and I wanted to speak with Graham about where he thought our relationship was going
but could do no such thing –we had only been dating for 5 months and I was worried he would think
I was a crazy woman! It poured with rain the whole day but eventually cleared in the late afternoon
and Graham suggested that we go for a walk. Off we set for the top of a koppie in the reserve – the air
smelled beautiful and clean and the sky was bright with the late afternoon light. We reached the top
and I thought – how romantic, what a spectacular view, what a lovely place to get engaged! Next thing
I knew Graham kissed me and stared at me in a very special sort of way and I just knew that he was
going to ask me to marry him. Graham half-knelt on the rocks and told me that he wanted to grow
old and grey with me and share his life with me! And so we were engaged on a beautiful Highveld
afternoon at the top of a mountain and my heart soured! Not that easy a place to get cellphone signal
to share our exciting news! Nothing can prepare you for how you feel when you know and understand
that someone just “gets you” and loves you as much as you love them... Five months later we were
married in front of our family and friends. A spectacular and overwhelmingly happy day. Someone
once said that “sometimes life is too good to be alone and sometimes life is too hard to be alone” – I
now know exactly what that means.

THINGS WE LOVE
Aimee’s style: a relaxed picnic complete with lounge areas and cocktail tables spread both
inside and outside of Shepstone Gardens.
The food: portable dining that came in a variety of courses – gluvein and canapés,
starters, mains, and dessert harvest table (together with nutella crepe stand and jars of
different icings and toppings so that people could make up their own cupcakes; cheese
platters, fresh soup and bread).
The vintage colour palette of dusty pink, grey and ivory coinciding with the old-world
style garden flowers, birdcages filled with flowers and antique fabric drapery.
The jazz band playing all day in the garden under the bell tower, as well as quirky
activities for guests – a photo booth with props, signature vases, each couple were given a
puzzle piece of a Georgia O’Keefe picture to paint, an all-day coffee bar, and a good old
fashioned game of boucce.
And a brilliant idea of serving their wedding cake at the church straight after the service.

5 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR SHOOT WORK FOR YOU
1. Pick a location that means something to you. It can be a simple one like your favourite park, the
place where you first met or even at home.

2. Wear clothes that reflect your personality. We love vintage inspired things so this helped with our
styling on the day, but perhaps you love wearing jeans and a tee.

3. The photos are about the two of you and the exciting time that lies ahead. See it as a practice
round for your wedding. Do you like to smile or kiss or even just look at each other? Be comfortable
with one another and find which poses work for you. It is also a good day for your makeup/hair trial
to see how they photograph. I also had our wedding florist make a small bouquet to use as a prop so
that I could get an idea of what flowers and colours I liked.

4. A theme really helps and if you can tie it together with you wedding then the creative process
will be easier. Deciding what type of wedding you would like will assist when you are forming your
theme ideas. We went with a vintage theme and some of the props used in our shoot made their way
to our wedding.

5. Finally – don’t be afraid to share your ideas with your photographer. If you are a stylist at heart
then have some props ready or style your home to suit the feel of the shoot. You have to be happy
with the end results so speak up.

“Stay true
to yourself
and you can’t
go wrong.
Remember
there are no
rules!”

welcoming party
If you are having a destination wedding, or if many of your guests are travelling from afar,
plan to organise an informal “Meet and Greet” party. This party naturally happens before the
wedding day, but these ideas that follow can easily be used for a post wedding get together
too. Most likely, you will be getting married on the weekend, but many of your guests will
arrive the day before the function, therefore it is a good idea to have scheduled a casual get
together for example on a Friday afternoon if it is a Saturday afternoon wedding, whereby
you will be able to spend some real quality time with your family and friends.

INVITATIONS
As part of your destination wedding invitations, it is customary to provide accommodation
details. This could include varied hotel, guesthouse and B&B options, possibly some that you
have been able to negotiate discounted rates for your wedding guests. In addition you may
wish to include a separate note card with the details of the pre wedding party or send this at
a later stage based on your confirmed guest list.

GOOD TIP: Set up a wedding blog or website where you can provide all sorts of information
to assist your guests. This could include information about the wedding location and
surrounding areas, how to get there, accommodation and sightseeing options as well as you
could share details about how you met, a bit about each of you and the proposal. A mini
photo album and a comments/questions section are great ideas too!

WELCOME BAGS
When your guests arrive, it is a thoughtful touch to have a “welcome bag” placed inside their
hotel room to welcome them to their wedding and immediately make them feel at ease.
Some fun ideas that apply to all locations include:
A tin, canvas bag, box or basket whereby the little goodies can be placed inside. For example
if you are getting married on an island or in the African bush fill a little local woven basket.
Bottled water customised with labels is an inexpensive but useful item to include.
Little mini packets of local sweets and treats or baked goodies.
A note card welcoming them to your wedding – a cost effective and co-ordinating choice
would be a postcard featuring the location.
A little favour in the form of a souvenir makes it easy to find something useful and
appropriate: key rings, candles, memo pads, matches etc.

ENTERTAINMENT
A pre wedding party is a good way for your guests to meet each other and already start
having a good time! Add to the merriment by having a few casual activities:
Sport: A bit of soccer or volleyball
Lawn Games: Croquet, bocce and giant jenga
Something for the Kids:
Live Entertainment: African or Belly Dancers, Fireworks

BRITISH WEDDING TRADITIONS
Here are a few wedding traditions that originated in Britain, some are old and true and
others may be the something new and out of the blue thing that you are looking for.
Flower Girl
OLD: Wedding flowers are scattered by a small girl preceding the bride and her wedding party down the aisle. The
flowered path and symbolic walk express hope for the bride’s path through life to be happy and lovely.

NEW: Invite your guests to walk together with you and your new husband between the wedding chapel and the wedding
reception site. As part of the procession have decorative wands of ribbon or paper flags that guests can wave, or bells,
toy trumpets or party horns. If you are having children at your wedding have a whole bunch of little ones tossing petals or
confetti.

A Shoe In
OLD: During the Tudor period, wedding reception guests threw shoes at the newlyweds as they were leaving the church
for good luck. The modern tradition is to tie shoes to the honeymoon vehicle.

NEW: As a surprise going away present, place in the car boot a shoebox with a pair of JUST MARRIED flip flops that the
couple can wear on their island honeymoon.

Rain, Rain Go Away?

OLD: The English consider rain on a wedding day a sign of good fortune.

NEW: Look forward to the possibility of rain, by having some candid shots behind a pretty parasol, and you and your
groom sporting some good old gumboots.
All in White
OLD: English bridesmaids wear wedding dresses very much like the bride’s, so she cannot be singled out by any jealous
evil wishers, who might curse her for her happiness.

NEW: This trend has definitely been popular in the last few months; where the entire bridal party is dressed in white,
this is particularly lovely when the bridesmaids all select a similar style, but no two dresses are alike. For a less forced look
have the dresses bought off the rack from a popular local designer.

Lucky Charm
OLD: Brides sew a good luck charm, such as the silver horseshoe of royal British brides, to the hem of their wedding
dresses. Old English tradition also calls for the bride to carry a horseshoe, streaming with ribbons, for good luck.

NEW: Spread the luck, and tie little silver charms to your guests’ napkins.

Layer Cake
OLD: Traditional English wedding cake is a fruitcake, usually made with raisins, ground almonds, cherries and marzipan.
The top layer of the wedding cake is called the “christening cake” which the couple saves for the baptism of their first
child.

NEW: Instead of the cake being saved for the christening, purchase a cake topper that can be used for all future family
functions, make your own custom painted wooden dolls (see our handmade weddings article) or a silver monogramme
letter with crystal detail in the initial of your surname.

Florists worldwide are sure to have a

heart attack when they see this DIY
version of the rose bouquet spotted over
at Kiss The Groom. We are sure we
broke every cardinal floristry rule, but
figure it looks just as good, and it only
has to last a day afterall!

MATERIALS
5 Large Red Roses
Glue Gun with Glue
Scissors
Cotton wool
Florist’s Green Tape

DIRECTIONS
1. Heat up your glue gun.
2. Trim roses of all leaves, and cut
stems off, except for one being the
best rose which is to form the centre
rose of the bouquet.
3. Using scissors cut off the green base
of the flower, and then gently pluck all
the petals off the rose. Discard any petals that are small or have brown spots or edges.
4. Turn the rose upside down and add hot glue to the base of the rose, then stick on the petals.
Repeat this step multiple times slowly working your way all around the base of the rose. To create
a big rose, half way through you will start gluing your rose petals to the other petals centre as
opposed to the centre of the arrangement.
5. For the stem, make a handle by wrapping around cottonwool covered in green florists tape.
