Now you can help ESL learners understand the essential language of workplace
safety and provide them with the tools they need to prevent or reduce accidents
and injuries on the job. Vocabulary is introduced in an accessible picture-dictionary
format that helps students quickly recognize even complicated or technical terms
and relate them to their own workplace. Students then transition to practice and
application activities that link core vocabulary with related terms and phrases.
Learners are continually encouraged to relate what they learn to personal experi-
ence and create their own workplace-specific safety vocabulary lists.
Key Vocabulary for a Safe Workplace is organized into four main units:
+ warning signs and first aid items safe use of tools and machinery
+ health and ergonomics + safety information on labels and tags
A Safety Tool Kit appendix supplements the main body of the text and focuses on
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), health and injury terms, health and safety
policies, Lockouts and Tagouts (LOTO), and helpful exercises for the workplace.
Key Vocabulary for a Safe Workplace is highly flexible. It can be used as part of a
prevocational or general ESL course for students preparing to enter the workforce, a
class at a work site, or a handy reference tool to refresh or expand understanding
of safety terms. Lessons can be used in any order and adapted to individual, pair,
or group settings.
