SECTION 221223

FACILITY INDOOR POTABLE WATER STORAGE TANKS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. General: Read this section with General Requirement Division 1, Design Drawings,
Document II Conditions of Contract and other Sections of Document III-2 Particular
Specifications.

B. Section Includes: All water storage tanks and accessories for Domestic and Fire Water
System in accordance with the requirements of the Contract Documents, works includes:
1. Mechanical works like sleeves, puddle flanges etc. in RCC tanks.
2. Metal works like ladders, access doors etc.
3. Water tank level control and indication instrumentation.
4. Water tank ventilation.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Performance:
1. All components installed within water tanks shall be of corrosion resistant material
like stainless steel or dezincification resistant copper alloys.
2. Refer to and comply with Division 26 in respect of all electrical works.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data:
1. Submit product data, samples and shop drawings under provisions of Section
013300. Include coordinated positions of water stops, construction joints etc. in
water tank walls.
2. Submit wiring diagrams, details of components and panel construction and mounting
details in respect of water tank level control and indication instrumentation.

B. Test Certificate:
1. Submit test certificate of construction materials to show compliance with the
specifications.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Delivery products to site, store and protect from direct sunlight.

B. Keep items in shipping cartons until time of installation.

C. Store factory calibrated items which are dropped or subjected to shock otherwise, in
separate containers with appropriate labels till completion of works. Keep a record of the
same for inspection by the Engineers.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

5. Or other approved equal.

B. The manufacturers listed herein and included for the purpose of establishing minimum
quality standards. Products equal in quality to or better than those specified will be
accepted. The decision of acceptability shall rest with the Engineer.

2.2 WATER TANK LEVEL INDICATORS/CONTROLLERS

A. Water Storage Tanks


1. Use controller/indicator with the required nos. of switch assemblies for each tank.
2. Remote indicator panel in the mechanical room, containing the following:
a. Main isolator interlocked with the door and power on LED indicator (red).
b. Remote LED indicator.
c. High level LED indicators.
d. Water low level LED indicator.
e. Alarm buzzer.
f. Alarm test and mute facility.
g. Over flow audio-visual alarm.
h. Set of terminal/relays for inter connection with the pump set, and building
automation system etc.
3. Attain the following functions:
a. Water level indication (dial shall be calibrated in imperial gallons and cubic
meters/meters in height).
b. High/low water audio-visual alarms.
c. Low water cutout of fresh water pump sets.
d. On site adjustment of alarm set points.
e. Provision for hook up with the building automation system for critical alarms.
f. Float switches operation in detection of transfer pump sets.

2.3 CONTROL PANELS

A. Refer to and comply in accordance with contract document Section 230514 “Electrical
Materials and Equipment” for control panel starters.

2.4 CONDUITING AND WIRING

A. Refer to and comply in accordance with contract documents for conduits and wiring.

2.5 ANTI-VORTEX SUCTION INHIBITOR

A. Provide anti-vortex suction devices to each pump suction connection. It shall be


manufactured in stainless steel 316 (austenitic) which shall have excellent resistance to
chemical attach and the best resistant properties with flange for connection with puddle
flange piping.

2.6 GRP WATER STORAGE TANK

A. GRP Tanks:
1. Mitsubishi - Japan
2. Aquastow - UK.
3. SEKISUI - Japan
4. Balmoral – U.K.
5. Bridgestone – Japan
6. Or other approved equal.

B. The manufacturers listed herein and included for the purpose of establishing minimum
quality standards. Products equal in quality to or better than those specified will be
accepted. The decision of acceptability shall rest with the Engineer.

2.7 WATER TANK LADDERS

A. The external and internal ladders shall be located to facilitate easy and safe access to the
interior of the tank.

B. Inner ladder shall be PVC, 300mm wide and matching length to cover the full height of the
tank and should be strong enough to take a load of 100 Kg.

C. Outer/external ladder shall be hot dipped galvanized steel, 375mm wide.

D. Provide safety cage of 25 x 3mm (1 x 1/8”) hot-dipped galvanized steel flat for external
ladders exceeding 2.5 m (8 feet) in height. Attach rigidly to ladder by bolting to specially
prepared lugs on the ladder rail (omit on ladder inside tank).

E. Provide additional 25mm nom. dia. overhead rail bolted to ceiling soffit at the inside and
outside of the tank access opening (in case of tanks with side access only).

2.8 WATER TANK ACCESS DOORS

A. Top Access Doors


1. Fabricate from minimum 1.5mm thick type 316 stainless steel sheets, boxed to form
rigid sections. All corners shall be mitered and all joints welded full length to give a
continuous smooth finish. Attach door frames to concrete by nailing/screwing integral
purpose made tabs, on the tank roof. Fill the joint of the frame with concrete with
sealant on the visible side
Frame with upstand neck minimum 10cm high above finished roof level.
2. The door shall be capped on the frame neck with the rubber gasket. The construction
of the door and frame shall ensure dustproof closure.

2.9 WATER TANK VENTILATION - TANKS AT BASEMENT

A. Provide fabricated goose necks with flanged joints on top of the tank to allow for free entry
and exit of air during filling or emptying of the tank.

B. Use copper with copper piping and hot dip galvanized black steel with ferrous piping.

C. The end of goose neck shall form a 135 degree arc from the horizontal plane, terminated
square to the pipe axis and shall have integral flanged connections to the tank.

D. Cover the mouth of the goose neck with copper wire mesh net to prevent the entry of flies
and pests. Attach the net to the pipe with worm driven hose clamps.

2.10 CONTROL PANELS

A. Refer to and comply in accordance with contract document for control panel.

2.11 CONDUITING AND WIRING

A. Refer to and comply in accordance with contract documents for conducting and wiring.

2.12 SECTIONAL WATER STORAGE TANK

A. Materials: The materials for the manufacture of panels, stays, brockets, corner angles and
pads etc. shall be glass fibre reinforced plastic conforming to the following properties:
1. Specific gravity 1.7
2. Minimum Tensile Strength 850 Kg/cm2
3. Minimum Impact Strength 75 Kg/cm2
4. Minimum shear strength 830 kg/cm2
5. Light Transmission Factor 0%
6. The panel shall be made by hot pre/premoulding process.
- Bottom panel max. thickness not less than 6 mm.
- Side panel max. thickness not less than 6 mm
7. Sealing materials shall be special rubber sealant of min. 2.8mm thickness.
8. All stainless steel parts shall be conforming to BS 070 Grade 316 L.
9. All external supports frame etc. shall be of rolled steel one Sections conforming to BS
449.

2.13 FLOAT VALVES

A. Delayed action float valves: Angle / Globe pattern, single seated, hydraulically operated,
pilot controlled, diaphragm type, normally closed valve of cast iron construction with
flanged ends complete with pilot assembly, type `K' copper capillary lines, mounting plate,
plastic float and operating rod, adjustable stops etc. complete.

2.14 WATER STORAGE TANK VENTILATION

A. Hoods
1. Factory manufactured vent caps of coated cast iron construction with counter
flashing collar deep protective hood and recessed securing screws.
2. The hood shall be attached to a pipe embedded or installed within a flashing flange
on the water tank roof slab.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 SLEEVES, PUDDLE FLANGES ETC.

A. Erect sleeves, puddle flanges etc., in the formwork perpendicular to the wall face and rigidly
to resist displacement during pouring of concrete.

B. Ensure vertically of flange faces and alignment of bolt holes with connecting equipment
(valves, etc.).

C. Seal the openings around, so as to avoid leakage (and resultant honey combing) and
undesirable formation of concrete.

D. Check alignment immediately after pouring of concrete. Make adjustment where required.

3.2 LADDERS AND ACCESS DOORS

A. Install inserts in tank walls. Follow procedure for sleeves (given above) for attaining proper
alignment.

B. Use cap nuts of corrosion resistant material for fastening ladder to wall.

3.3 FLOAT VALVE

A. Use bronze equilibrium ball float valves delayed type on the main supply connection in the
domestic tanks at basement and upper roof.

3.4 LEVEL INDICATION AND CONTROL INSTRUMENTATION AND PANEL

A. Refer to and comply in accordance with the contract document for control panel.

B. Coordinate with the Electrical Works and provide power supply to the system from the
standby power supply network, where possible. All conduiting and wiring to the source is
included in this section.

C. Extend services to controlled equipment (like pump control panel).

3.5 TESTING AND COMMISSIONING

A. Install blank flanges/plugs to enable the civil works contractor to test the water tightness of
concrete.

B. On completion of works, clean the inside of the tank thoroughly of all dirt, wash down with
water and drain.

C. Disinfect the tank along with the disinfection and flushing of the tank supply piping.

D. Obtain satisfactory water analysis and submit to the Engineer, prior to handing over. This
process to be carried out in the same process explained elsewhere in this specifications by
sending a sample of water to be tested to a public authority which has to certify the test in
accordance with it’s code of practice or with AWWA C601.
