COLD WAR:

Superpowers: A state that is characterized by extensive influence and dominant position to project
war at a global scale. This is done through the combined means of economic, military, technological
and cultural strength as well as diplomatic and soft power influence. It was termed used to denote
USA and USSR from 1945

Grand Alliance: USA, USSR and Britain were involved in this. The objective of this was to defeat the
Axis allies: Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan

Bloc: A group of countries tied together by a military alliance and ideology

USA POLICY

Policy of Containment: United States policy using numerous strategies to prevent the spread
of communism abroad. A component of the Cold War, this policy was a response to a series
of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge its communist sphere of influence in Eastern
Europe, China, Korea, and Vietnam.

Truman Doctrine: With the Truman Doctrine, President Harry S. Truman established


thathe United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all
democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces. The
Truman Doctrine effectively reoriented U.S. foreign policy, away from its usual stance of
withdrawal from regional conflicts not directly involving the United States, to one of
possible intervention in far away conflicts.

Marshall Plan: The Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Program, was a U.S.
program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II.

BERLIN BLOCKADE: 1948-1949

The Berlin Blockade (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of
the Cold War. The Berlin Blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of France,
Great Britain and the United States to travel to their sectors of Berlin, which lay within Russian-
occupied East Germany.

Blockade: A blockade is an effort to cut off supplies, war material or communications from a
particular area by force, either in part or totally. A blockade should not be confused with an
embargo or sanctions, which are legal barriers to trade.

Iron curtain (a term used to describe an imaginary line diving Europe between soviet influence
and western influence(USA capitalism) and symbolizes efforts by the Soviet Union to block itself
and its satellite states from open contact with the West and non-Soviet-controlled areas.
