Introduction
City-wide there are over 640 lane miles of streets that are maintained by the City. Historically, the City
has plowed streets when snow levels have reached two (2) inches. Additionally, salt has been spread on
every lane mile regardless of the level of snow which has meant that we have laid salt on 640 plus lane
miles each time a snow event has occurred. The lack of available salt for the upcoming snow season has
caused the City to revise its current policy to address the method of snow removal from and the salting
of streets, city-wide. Because of the limited availability of salt the City is initiating what is commonly
referred to as “sensible salting” which is “applying the right amount in the right place at the right time.”
Hence, beginning with the 2018-2019 snow season the following will be the snow removal and salting
policy for streets, city-wide.

Policy
1. The City will start plowing once snow accumulation reaches ¾” of an inch on first (1st) and
second (2nd) priority streets [see attached lists of 1st and 2nd priority streets].
2. 1st priority streets will be salted as normal.
3. 2nd priority streets will be salted as normal.
4. Trucks will not enter zone streets until all 1st and 2nd priority streets have been completed.
5. Zone streets will be plowed and/or salted as follows [see attached zone map]:
 Grades and intersections will be plowed and salted
 Intersections will be salted within 100 feet in each direction
 Zone streets will no longer be salted end to end
6. Once snow accumulation reaches 2” or more, zone streets will be plowed from end to end;
but, not salted. Zone streets will not to be salted unless there is an ice event.
