"Join us for beginner children's yoga, where you will learn how to take notice of your breath and

how your body moves in space, two principles that are extremely important for the future
aspiring actor! We will take time to get up and move our bodies in a mindful way through the
creation of shapes, mimicking animals, mystical creature, superheroes, and more!"
 
In theatre programs across the country, yoga has become a regular practice for students as they
embark on their training. Typically, if not referred to traditionally as "yoga," these classes will be
referred to as "movement" classes. The study of yoga can be linked to the study of theatre in
more ways than you might imagine! Both practices encompass the mind, body, and spirit. For the
children that come to Firebird for their theatrical experience that may choose to explore yoga as
an additional offering, they will embark on a new journey that will not only serve them in their
future endeavors as an actor (should they choose that route long term), but also serve them in
their daily life as they learn and grow.
 
Learning and adapting to a new skill is a wonderful trait for any actor and human being to
possess, and since this may be a child's first experience with yoga, they will have the opportunity
to tap into parts of their body and mind they did not know could be connected to their theatre
studies. Yoga increases flexibility and strength of the mind and the body, allowing its students to
begin to understand their bodies as they move through space, their breath, and the inner workings
of the mind and heart. As actors, we aim to simply experience experiences rather than
intellectualize them. This allows for a much freer approach to our acting. Yoga asks of us to
remain in the present moment, which allows us to cultivate this skill. Yoga also encourages us to
practice non-judgement of ourselves and others. I believe this is an important skill to hone at an
early age, especially for young actors. If young people do not have the tools to practice free
movement and free thinking, they cannot be expected to take those principles into a rehearsal
space and feel successful in their work! Yoga also can teach children calming techniques, such as
breath work, to take with them into auditions, rehearsals, and performance as well as into their
education and other activities during a time that is less than predictable.
 
Most importantly, yoga for children is meant to be fun! Different poses and postures allow
children the opportunity to get their bodies moving in a fun yet gentle way, calming the nervous
system all while pretending to be a tree, dolphin, puppy dog…the list goes on and on! There is
no better way to tap into the imagination, gain a deeper connection to your "self," and have fun
while doing it than with yoga!
