Supervision of Sh. Bijay Kumar Agrawal, who is an advocate practicing
District and Sessions Court, Deoghar. His practice and area of expertise also
extends to the High Court of Jharkhand. His area of expertise family law and
consumer court cases dealing in cases of various backgrounds.

INTERNSHIP TENURE

The duration of my Winter Internship, 2018 consisted of Four Weeks. My

internship commenced from 13th November 2018 to 13th December 2018 at the
Office and Chamber of Sh. Bijay Kumar Agrawal.

WORK ASSIGNED DURING THE TENURE

The main tasks assigned during the internship were mainly concerned with
knowing the procedure of day to day functioning of the court along with
learning the court room etiquettes and assisting the Advocate in clerical
manner. Court visit as well as being at the office was a part of daily routine.
The most significant work that was assigned to me was of getting dates of
various cases from court.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ASSIGNED DURING

THE INTERNSHIP

1. The major roles and responsibilities assigned to me were assisting and

helping the Sir in doing his daily procedural tasks at all point in days. The
reporting time on every working day was 10:00 A.M.
2. To assist the sir my arranging the case files in appropriate place in a proper
order, other tasks included was doing procedural work such as filing of case
copies, buying court fees etc.
3. Assigning the files according to the mentioned dates in the case diary was
another major responsibility. Attending the hearings and proceedings was
one of the another tasks.
4. Drafting of legal work was not expected of me as I was a learner of 1 st year
and not studied any law except introduction to Law of Torts and parts of the
Motor Vehicle Act, so all I had to do was assist sir as a clerk would do like
handling his files, books and go with him to the courts where he had to
appear.

LEARNINGS AND OVERALL EXPERIENCE

Pursuing a degree in Law, the basic and main objective of doing an internship
is to work and gain experience in a professional environment. To quote Helen
Hayes who once said- “The expert in anything was once a beginner”. This
internship taught me the importance and sense of being punctual, working in a
group and being aware at the workplace. This internship made me aware of the
most important ingredient of becoming a good lawyer, i.e. The Art of
Observation. This was my first time at an internship so I was a bit nervous. On
the very first day I was introduced to all the advocates who used to sit near to
sir in the BAR council building and the Sir himself took the responsibility of
supervising and guiding me most of the time.

On the first day, sir told the clerk to take me on a round of court premises so
that I know about all the courts, this was done in order to make me realise the
working, differentiation, specification and importance of each court. I had to
follow the Advocate carrying his files and books wherever he would go. I was
also told to interact with other advocates as much as I could do without
bothering them.

During the second week of m internship, I was assigned to observe the

proceedings of the court where side by side the clerk used to brief me about
the case. The clerk would give details about the stage of the case currently
along with the facts of the case, this was done so that I learn about various
stages of case and how the case shifts from one stage to another. I was also
made to learn clerical work regarding how to get court fees, stamps etc.

I was assigned to arrange the files at the appropriate place in proper order. In
the free time, I had sought clarifications of my understanding of various
aspects of law and the court procedure. I was also told by sir about the
procedure to get a copy of the order passed by court. Sir also briefed me about
the various stages involved in filing a bail petition as at that point of time he
was dealing with a case where a person sought bail. He told me about the
processes involved in filing a bail petition before the district judge after the
bail petition had been rejected by the CJM court.

In my initial days at the internship, I was told Bijay Agrawal Sir that he would
not assign me with much legal working and would not emphasise me to work
on legal aspect and Law as I knew very less about it being in the first semester
and having studied only Jurisprudence (Legal Method, Indian Legal System
and Basic Theory of Law) and Law of Torts including MV Accident. Thus, I
had not dealt with any legal provisions for any case. The only legal part
assigned to me was to find case laws for cases as guided by Bijay Agrawal Sir.
Also in the free time, I had sought clarifications of my understanding of
various aspects of law and the court procedure. During the time of client
counselling and hearing of the facts, I was made to sit behind Bijay Agrawal
Sir and observe the party and the counselling process. The one thing which I
realized after spending one month in court was that the BAR Association plays
a big role in the functioning of courts.

During my internship, Bijay Agrawal sir me told me that the harsh reality of
these lower courts are that the poor and the helpless have to struggle hard
inorder to get justice. The poor are exploited are ill treated by some of the
advocates. “To become a good lawyer, you must have good observation
skills” sir used this phrase always. In the last days, I was made to realise that
in order to become successful in the court, it is very necessary to learn the
things which have to be done outside the court i.e. the clerical work. On the
occasions when work was done early, we used to have fruitful discussions the
in chambers on the matters ranging from amendments in Law, current political
and legal scenario in the country, matters and news of Jharkhand High Court,
current events, past experiences of Bijay Agrawal Sir etc.

This experience at District and Sessions Court gave me the opportunity to

observe the court proceedings, the application of law and helped me in
understating the procedural aspect. The internship also broke the perception
which I had in my mind about the courts as shown in Bollywood movies as I
had never been to a court before this. When my internship was officially over
on 13th December, 2018 Bijay Agrawal Sir wished me luck for my future and
asked to be in touch with him and contact him whenever I face any kind of
problem.
