To better appreciate what this means, consider the opposite approach, extensive
WebSite vegetable growing as our ancestors did it in their farm-kitchen gardens for centuries. Pre

Visit INHS had to be carried in buckets or watering cans, and pumped by hand from wells or else
Review's carried from streams and springs. In order that plants could maintain themselves on
Home Page rainfall, and get through rainless weeks without wilting, they had to be placed quite a bit
further apart than urban market gardeners did. Because these well-separated plants
were able to constantly expand their root zones without experiencing competition or
running into the root exudates of neighboring plants it was not necessary to make their
soil nearly as fertile because they were more efficient assimilators of nutrients as well as
better foragers for moisture.
I first observed these realities when, in the 1980s, I went into the mail order vegetable
seed business and began growing a variety trials ground. In trials work the object is not
to produce a lot of food, it is to produce a lot of information. To evaluate a variety and
compare it to other, similar varieties, every plant is usually given sufficient space to fully
express its genetic potential. So trials are laid out in single widely spaced rows providing
sufficient space to walk freely between them while carrying a clipboard, taking notes. The
plants usually are put far enough apart in the rows that they do not touch or just barely
touch at maturity. My business supplied home vegetable gardeners so my trials were
designed to duplicate the average home garden soil — only moderately fertile and
minimally moist — so as to reveal which varieties are best able to handle less than ideal
conditions.

In contrast to how my intensive raised bed personal garden grew, (given far more water
and its raised beds made super fertile) what I observed on those trials was:

plants of all sorts in my trials ground became much larger, so broccoli for example
made enormous flowers and heads of incredible quality and flavor, the side shoots
of widely-separated broccoli plants were far more numerous and larger and kept
producing far longer;

quality of root crops did not decline after they had become what I might have
considered overly large (even six-inch-diameter carrots or beets that grew on for
months after what might have normally been considered “mature,” were still tasty
and tender);

fruiting plants like tomatoes or peppers or zucchini did not quit yielding nor tend to
get diseased so readily toward the end of the season. Instead they grew to
monsters and their yield steadily increased as ever larger numbers of flowers
formed ever greater numbers of fruit on ever-huger plants;

bush beans did not quit yielding after a few weeks as many garden writers believe
they must, but kept on producing several weeks longer than anticipated because
they could keep on growing, besides, their pods were larger, formed more rapidly
and so were more tender, so it took less time to fill the basket;

despite lower levels of fertility (but given more growing room per plant) sweet corn
grew six to twelve inches taller and their ears an inch or so longer and somewhat
fatter;

I could considerably expand this list.

Because my variety trials took far less work, water and fertilizer for the amount of food I
produced I began using the same extensive methods in my personal gardening. I had
traded the use of somewhat more space for the need for less water, less fertility and
less work.

Our civilization is entering an era when everything made with petroleum is going to
become ever more costly. And that includes soil fertility boosters such as seedmeals and
animal manures. Feeding chickens will cost more; transportation of their waste will cost
more; I predict that bagged chicken manure fertilizers will significantly increase in price.
Municipal water is becoming more costly if for no other reason than purification and
pumping are all energy intensive activities. Municipal water is also becoming more scarce
in places as watersheds degrade and population increases make larger demands on a
limited resource.

"Our civilization is entering an era when everything made

with petroleum is going to become ever more costly."

So it behoves the home food grower to examine their methods and consider producing
as much or more food
of higher quality
using less water and
less soil building
by using a bit more land
and, as I found in my trials work, and the bonus . . . doing a heap less work to get it.

I predict that the intensive raised bed systems that become standard practice in North
American backyard gardening about 1975 are going to pass into oblivion, as we return to
the methods of our ancestors.

From the web: sashimi & sushi, made from raw fish, serve with shredded

THE 85 % DIET
85 % raw, 85 % sugar & starch-free.
Food choices you can serve anybody in your family who refuses to eat
all-raw.
You may be able to find ideas in your own cookbooks.
A good idea, according to NH, is to have two meals per day, 6 hours apart,
each with some animal foods. Possibly a snack inbetween. Then let the
stomach rest for 18 hours. On the other hand, for those who are overweight
and suffer from food cravings, it may be better to instead have 5 smaller
meals per day, and avoid stuffing oneself.

EXAMPLES:
Low-heat egg-dishes: Top left - low-heat poached egg with salad. Top right:
eggs heated on low in coconut oil until egg-white coagulation. Bottom - the
same eggs stirred slightly, and stirred well - also added is: kelp powder,
fish-oil and bee-pollen.

Sardines from a can, with a blended salad, a whole salad, parsley and
tomatoes. Note: sardines with heads are better.

From Swedish cookbook: Anchovy eye - Egg yolks, chopped onions, capers,
chopped raw anchovie fillets, chopped red beets, chopped parsley. (Skip the
toasted bread.)
From Swedish cookbook: Roast saddle of reindeer - roasted at low heat, note
the reddish color. Served with salad, mini-tomato decoration, pearl onions.

From Norwegian cookbook: Shrimps in avocado - serve with creme fraiche

dressing, dill and lemon.

From Norwegian cookbook: Warmed salmon - Boil up water with some spices
& mustard seeds, take off the heat, add lemon juice, add the salmon pieces
and let stand until the salmon is warmed through, 1/2 hour. Take up the
salmon. Serve with sliced onion, asparagus, and a salad.

From Scandinavian cookbook: Smoked mackerel, with lettuce leaves, spring

onions.

From Swedish cookbook: West Coast Salad - raw mushrooms, frozen peas,
tomatoes & lettuce, and an assortment of seafood (lightly cooked lobster, shell
fish, shrimp, cray-fish). Served with dressing made from olive oil and lemon
juice.

To think about:
FOOD COMBINING
after eating proteins, especially animal proteins --- avoid
all sugars and starches for 3 hours, to avoid putrification
(semi-destruction) of the proteins, and digestive
problems. Don't eat sugars before the meal either.
AMOUNT
No limits to salads. Limit the proteins: eat about 1 gram
of protein per kilogram (2.2 lb) of your lean body weight,
per day. No more, unless you are an athlete, or a
growing teenager. Approximation: about the size of the
palm of your hand, and thickness, for each of 2 meals,
daily. The proteins should be complete (e.g. from animals).
Eat a lot of good fats, appr. equal the amount of protein
foods.
SUGARS & STARCHES
If you can't avoid sugars completely (which should be done,
optimally, for at least 3 weeks, to rest the pancreas and other glands) -
perhaps best to eat your sugars & starches as a small
snack, together with lettuce leaves, to minimize eventual
blood sugar increase. Berries are better than fruit. Raw
mini-carrots is an ok (small) snack.

Drs. Michael & Mary Eades - from PROTEIN POWER:

"An anthropologist examining skeletal remains of early man can tell
immediately whether the bones and teeth belonged to a hunter-gatherer
(mainly protein eater) or a farmer (mainly carbohydrate eater) simply by
their condition.
The hunters grew tall, with strong, well-formed bones and sound
teeth, and
the remains of the farmers usually show skeletal signs of malnutrition,
stunted growth, and tooth decay.
For 700,000 years humans ate a diet of mainly meat, fat, nuts, and
berries. Eight thousand years ago we learned to farm, and as our
consumption of grains increased, our health declined. Genetic
evolutionary changes take a minimum of 1,000 generations - or another
8,000 to 10 000 years to adapt."

INTERVIEW QUOTE
Robert Crayhon: What's the best way to cook meat? How and when did
Paleopeoples start cooking their meat?
Loren Cordain: Organized stone hearths (and hence the first concrete
evidence for the control of fire) probably did not occur until the
appearance of Neanderthals roughly 200,000 years ago. So prior to this
time, humans probably did not cook their meat.
Robert Crayhon: What is the best way to cook meat?
Loren Cordain: The way we tend to cook meat these days is very
different from the ways of hunters and gatherers who tend to slow-cook
meats over a long period of time. A favored cooking procedure was
digging a pit and putting in hot stones, putting in the whole animal or
portions of it, putting in vegetable matter and other stones above the
vegetable matter and cooking the meat all day long. So what is
suggested is slow cooking at low heat.

reason at all. They spread a lot of bad rumors. So that made a lot of problems with me,
so I said what am I coming back and killing myself for, when they don't want me to
anyway.

Shelton's kids wanted him to close the school, they didn't want it open anymore. Because
they had had too many lawsuits already, you know. So I left, they didn't want me there,
they didn't appreciate me coming 3 times a week.
I worked for Shelton for 17 years, from 1964 to 1977. Shelton was still alive then, he was
living at the Health School, but he didn't come with us. He stayed at his school but it
wasn't open. And he had somebody coming in and taking care of him. Around 1979
Shelton closed the Health School, because he couldn't get anybody to really do anything,
and I had to come back to do the magazine.

He was there when other people were running it, but these other people were not very
responsible people, because they just decided to pick up and leave, and all the girls had
quit, and there was nobody to look after Dr. Shelton, and he was there for at least one
full day or 2 days alone. Bedridden. No food, no nothing. Nobody to turn him, nobody to
help him, they just left, and he couldn't get to the telephone. Somebody finally called and
said: those guys left and took everything with them and Willden better come and get Dr.
Shelton, or something. They said they took as much as they could of everything. They
were about to take something else when somebody came upon them.

His daughter Willden came and took him over to his wife's home in San Antonio, and
that's where they kept him until his death in 1985. They tried to run the Health School for
almost a year, so I think this was 1980. They tried to run it without me for almost a year,
but they couldn't do it.

When we were in Brownsville,

Greg and Tosca were also
studying midwifery. They set up
those home birthing centers for
people who didn't want to go into
the hospital or the clinic, a natural
birthing center, and we had
women coming in there. We had
little birth certificate for little girls
and little boys, and had other
things that we gave to the ladies.
They graduated from medical
school in Mexico, at Universidad
de Tamalipas. And Tosca was
with child again, when graduating,
Dr. Vetrano portrayed in the Brownsville Herald, 1980
she walked across the floor like
that. I came down to see her
graduate, because at that time I lived in Brownsville myself, near them. And I was running
the Chateau de Sages health school, because I had left Shelton's at that time. And Tosca
and Greg did the castle on the weekends, while they were studying. So I had 2 days off.

It was very hard to get that health school in Brownsville started, the Chateau. I should
have retired, because I had worked day and night for 17 straight years, and here I was
still commuting to San Antonio, trying to keep Shelton's open too. Wearing myself out for
6 months that way. I kept trying for 6 months. And it was just too difficult, especially with
everybody talking bad about me. You know, after I was killing myself, and then I had
people talking. This was 1980, and I was 50.

I was ready to retire. Working at a health school is hard. Natural Hygiene counselors, all
they do is counsel in the daytime and they go home and have a nice night of sleep and
not worry about anybody having a crisis or anything. That's fine, I think we need a lot of
counsellors, I am not putting them down, I am really pleased that we have hygienic
counselors like David Klein and all those other, we need millions of them, to teach
Hygiene to the people, but we do also need some doctors. But the doctors have it the
hardest. Because they have to fight the medical profession, and the family, the family
comes out there, sees where the person is, and they get mad, and they say "you're
coming home", boom, while they are still fasting, and then they sue you. And blame you
for something that happened.

I was in Brownsville from 78/79, and my health

school closed in 1981, something like that. We had a
hurricane, a huge storm, the first year I was open.
After that, zilch, no patients. We were full until then,
but after, people were afraid to come in. So the
business just went boom, and it was also during that
1981 collapse of the market. Nobody had any money
for a while. It was sort of a semi-depression.
So it was just a bad time, the hurricane plus the
economic condition in the US, and I had opened a
new place.

Not many people came, the cost of electricity was

2000 per month. It was economically not feasible,
because I had to pay 2000 a month on the mortgage
that I had on the Chateau, 1800 a month for the electricity, and then another 2000 for the
girls that worked there, and I wasn't even making 6000 a month. So I was losing money.
While helping to put them through school. So we just went through a lot of money there,
and didn't make any money back.

Next they sued Shelton's Health School and I was working there then. In the end they
took the health school and the home. My home in Brownsville was taken away. One big
lawsuit. And it was a physician's fault. This patient had been on cortisone for years and
years, I told him he couldn't come until he had been off cortisone for 6 months, and then a
month later he called and said "I just cannot do it at home, I want to come now".
Unfortunately I said yes. But when he got there he didn't want to break his fast when I
told him to, he got into a crisis and he needed cortisone to get through the crisis. He
didn't bring his prescription, so I took him to the hospital. He was going into shock
because you cannot take a crisis without a lot of adrenaline. There I told them he had
been on cortisone for years and I said he needed cortisone, but they didn't listen, they
just waited around, and he died. And then they blamed it on me and Shelton's Health
School. We went to the court.

When I was foreclosed on and lost the Castle, I lost all the 200,000 dollars I had put into
it, and all the monthly payments, making a fence, new roof, repairing, etc. I lost a lot of
money and was broke after the lawsuit, because they also took my house in Houston.
They didn't take the Queen's Castle away from me because I couldn't pay for it anymore,
so it went back to the previous owner.

After this, there was kind of a long hiatus, when I spent many years traveling around,
trying to keep writing all the time. I wrote a lot of stuff for Victoria Bidwell, but never got a
book finished before I got started on another project. Now I have about 8 books that are
more than 3/4 done, on the computer. I have a book on vaccination, on exercise,
weightloss, arterial sclerosis, food and feeding, vegetarianism, water (8 glasses a day,
that is not good for you), and food combining. (ANHS doesn't believe in food combining
anymore, but I am bringing it totally up to date, scientifically proving that it is good.)

All those books are almost written, I just have to finish them. But I don't want to fall into
the trap of no copyrighting, as Shelton did. Also, we have a book that Shelton wrote, that
he never published, full notes for a new book. I have so much in my head that I cannot
get to.

Then she heard of Natural Hygiene - the concept of the importance of the

After examining her and hearing her story, he told her, "You can be helped. I

"What then?" she demanded.

"Simply fast."
She did not understand. He explained at length to her the processes of fasting

The fast did the job.

In a matter not of months but of weeks the asthma cleared, within a few

H.M. Shelton, Fasting Can Save Your Life, 1964

"ALL cases of bronchial asthma are

remediable."

Dr. Shelton's Orthopathy disease encyclopedia:

BRONCHIAL ASTHMA

Symptoms: Asthma is preceded by chronic bronchitis and often by hay

fever and sinus affections. The paroxysms may be preceded by such
premonitory symptoms as oppression of the chest, mental depression,
dyspeptic or other symptoms, or may come on suddenly, usually at night.
The patient is unable to lie down, but is forced to sit up, often before an
open window. The dyspnea becomes intense, the face is pale, the
expression anxious, there is a great feeling of oppression in the chest and
often a dread of suffocation. Though labored, respiration is not usually
frequent, due to prolonged expiration. In severe or prolonged paroxysms
there is blueness, sweating, cold extremities, small and frequent pulse
and drowsiness. Paroxysms last from a few minutes to many hours and
may pass off suddenly, perhaps to recur soon or on several successive
nights, with slight cough and difficult breathing in the intervals; At first the
cough is nearly dry and the sputum very tenacious. At the beginning the
paroxysms may last only a few days, and recur at intervals of a few
weeks or months, but as the condition grows chronic, the asthma
becomes continuous.

Prognosis: ALL cases of bronchial asthma are remediable. Five to six

weeks are sufficient time for complete recovery in the average case.
More time is required in a small percentage of cases.

Care of the Patient: Eliminate toxemia, restore nerve energy and correct
the mode of living. The fast should last until all abnormal breath sounds
have disappeared from the lung; preferably, it should last until the tongue
is clean. Two to four days of fasting is usually enough in even the most
severe and long-standing cases to bring sufficient relief to allow the
patient to lie down and rest and sleep.
When the underlying toxic condition is eliminated, all forms of sensitization
disappear. When the asthmatic gets rid of toxemia he does not have to
worry about sensitization. He automatically gets rid of this when he gets
rid of the true cause toxemia. It is, perhaps, true that all asthmatics will
retain to some extent their sensitiveness to certain foods, chemicals,
heat, cold, etc., as they originally had that tendency or diathesis when
they were born, but by following a few simple rules of right living they may
always avoid a recurrence of asthma.
..... Few asthmatics have much idea of their limitations in eating, working,
enjoying, etc., and, as a consequence of their over-indulgence, are
constantly adding to their trouble. If they are to get well and remain well,
they must learn self-control.
..... The palliative treatment commonly employed adds greatly to
enervation and thus to toxemia. The original causes are not corrected.
Under such conditions, how can recovery be hoped for?

What sets Natural Hygiene apart from other health systems?

Natural Hygiene doesn't single out one specific thing that is
responsible for your overall health. Natural Hygiene comprises all of
the facets of healthful living, including physical activity and
exercise, wholesome diet, pure air and water, adequate rest and
sleep, mental and emotional poise, and creative activity. Natural
Hygiene is the art and science of living in such a way that all of
these aspects are provided abundantly.

What advice do you have for newcomers to Natural Hygiene?

Approach Natural Hygiene with an open mind. There is so much to

learn! Recognize that Natural Hygiene is more than body building or
a good diet. It is a way of looking inward, of being totally alert, of
realizing your fullest potential.

Review's 1. LUBRICANTS
Home Page Some preparations like mineral oil, olive oil and so-called medicinal paraffin are
intended to lubricate the intestine and colon to enable the food bolus to pass
more easily. But these structures supply their own lubrication and need none
from without. Oily substances tend to prevent normal absorption of food, and
dissolve fat-soluble vitamins, which are then passed out in the stools. This
causes an insidious form of malnutrition, which may lead to abnormal
conditions, such as anemia. Lubricants lead to the development of a lazy,
enervated and flaccid colon.

2. LAXATIVES
Some so-called laxatives occasion irritation in the digestive tract, giving rise to
violent bowel action. The effect of such
laxatives and purgatives is a weakened intestine, flaccid colon, and, eventually,
inflamed and damaged intestinal linings. The habitual use of such substances
may easily lead to ptosis, ulceration, and even cancer.

3. EATING BULK FOODS

A third means of inducing bowel action consists in eating such substances as
wheat bran, agar-agar, psyllium seed and similar forms of bulk to compensate
for the natural bulk removed in the refining process. While this method of
inducing bowel action succeeds for a time, it does not correct the diet. It
provides bulk, but not the minerals and vitamins removed from natural food.

Sylvester Graham stressed the importance of bulk in promoting more efficient

activity of the alimentary canal, as well as better bowel action. But there has
been a tendency to overstress this feature and provide too much bulk. The
in-nutritious portions of food are, as a rule, not disproportionately great.
However, they constitute all the bulk required for healthy action of the digestive
tract, assuming these portions are not removed by milling and refining
processes.

More important to good bowel action than bulk is normal nerve capacity. The
person with normal nerve energy will have normal bowel action on a diet of
bananas for instance, which contain almost no bulk. The enervated individual
may be constipated in spite of excessive bulk. It is more important in cases of
constipation to restore normal nerve energy than to add bulk to the diet.
Among those who seek to avoid the use of drugs, the enema and colonic
irrigation are very popular. Our first criticism of these practices is that they do
not remove or correct the cause or causes of constipation. By encouraging the
individual to resort to the enema or irrigation, we encourage him to ignore
causes.

4. ENEMAS
It should be known that normal peristalsis depends on good health; good health
does not stem from peristalsis. Taking large quantities of water into the colon,
whether by enema or by irrigation, distends it, leaves it dry and enervated and
causes constipation to become chronic. Any method of forcing bowel action
may add to constipation.

ANXIETY
All of these habits—the laxative habit, the bulk habit, the enema habit—and the
fallacies that give rise to them tend to produce deep-seated anxieties about
function of the bowels. Such anxiety may itself cause functional disturbances,
which, in many cases, may result in colitis or diarrhea alternating with
constipation. Or, in other cases, the emotional stress thus occasioned may
cause spasticity of the colon.

ALLOW REST
Instead of providing more work for an already enervated colon by these
methods, we would get better results by giving the digestive tract, including the
colon, a rest. If, instead of filling our digestive tract with bulk, we provided it
with natural food containing needed bulk and essential nutrients, we could
assure normal bowel function. Better nutrients, as here suggested, provide
more adequate nourishment of the whole organism, hence better function of
the body.
Instead of forcing bowel function we could all profit from the advice of that
grand old Hygienist of Boston, Dr. Charles B. Page: "Mind your own business,
and let the bowels mind theirs." By this he simply means that we should take
care of our part of the normal living processes and let the subconscious and
unconscious activities of the body do their own work in their own way. In
numerous cases, we have found that all that is needed to end constipation is to
cease efforts to cure it.

Constipation cures, like all the other cures, tend to produce the very trouble
they are intended to cure, just as sleep-inducing drugs occasion sleeplessness
and coffee-drinking causes the headache that it tries to relieve.

Herbert M. Shelton, Health For The Millions

Herbert M. Shelton wrote more than 40 books, published the Hygienic Review monthly and operated his
famous Dr. Shelton's Health School in San Antonio,Texas. He was the co-founder of the American Natural
Hygiene Society.

"In numerous cases, we have found that all that is

needed to end constipation is to cease efforts to
cure it."

FROM INHS EMAIL LIST DISCUSSION

QUOTE: "A Prime Example:

When your digestive tract is not functioning properly, your
body has to make room to accommodate that growing pile
of putrefied waste, which can harden and cause your colon
to significantly expand in size to become what is referred to
as a 'mega-colon'. Elvis Presley was known to have battled
congenital colon problems (congenitally twisted ganglionic
fold in his intestine) for years and ended up extremely
overweight. After his sudden death in 1977, four medical
examiner doctors performed an autopsy on Elvis. According
to an account based on their report, they noted that sections of his large intestine
ranged from 3 ½ to 5" in diameter! (A normal colon for someone Elvis's size is about
2").
As the medical examiners continued dissecting his colon, they found that "…the
mega-colon was jam-packed from the base of the descending colon all the way up
and halfway across the transverse colon. It was filled with 'white, chaulk-like fecal
matter"…." The impaction "had the consistency of clay and seemed to defy the
doctors' efforts with the scissors to cut it out "
The doctors believed that Elvis must have suffered discomfort from that fecal
impaction as the fecal material would have caused the colon to stretch as it worked its
way through. His diet of cooked food, his congenital colon problem, and his overuse of
laxatives and prescription drugs were large contributing factors. These factors have the
concomitant effect of slowing down the digestive system."

This article first appeared in the June 1958 issue of Natural Hygiene, an early
publication of the American Natural Hygiene Society, and was re-printed in ANHS
Health Science in 1998, with these words: It is remarkable that the overall thrust of
this article and the issues that it addresses are as timely today as they were 40 years
ago. William Esser, N.D., D.C., author of Dictionary of Natural Foods, was the
director of Dr. Essers Health Ranch in Lake Worth, Fla, until age 90. Dr. Esser was
one of the original co-founders of ANHS. He began his professional career In Natural
Hygiene in 1935.

"Sickness is unnecessary."

A voice of experience

Excerpted from a 1992 interview (ANHS Health Science)

Natural Hygiene is such a great thing, it should spread like wildfire. It offers great hope
for people, and a wide variety of conditions respond well to fasting and Natural Hygiene
care. But it requires discipline. It is not something to be bought or to be sold as a quick
fix.
Those who are not disciplined are accustomed to their addictions, and it is very difficult
for them to get away from that. Some of these people come back to the Ranch year
after year, and often I am tempted to tell them not to come! But then I realize that a
little benefit is better than nothing. I tell people to value health and the pleasure of being
well. Cherish the wonderful knowledge and enjoyment that you gain from living in a
healthy way. That is the reward of it all!

William Esser, Dr. Virginia Vetrano, and Jack Dunn Trop each served as president of
the Society in addition to their many other efforts on behalf of Natural Hygiene.
The roots of the Hygienic movement can be traced to the 1830s, set into motion by
pioneering doctors, both male and female, who first articulated the laws of life on
which the basic principles of Natural Hygiene are founded. Dr. Shelton was
instrumental in bringing these ideas into the 20th century In 1948, he, Dr.William
Esser, Dr. Gerald Benesh, Dr. Christopher Gian-Cursio,Dr.Jesse Mercer Gehman,
Jack DunnTrop, Irving Davidson, and Symon Gould founded the American Natural
Hygiene Society. The first annual ANHS Conference was held in 1949, at the Diplomat

Review's Those among us who wish to teach and lead others into the ways of Natural Hygiene
Home Page must learn how to be good Hygienists themselves before they can properly teach
others. They should stop talking about Natural Hygiene and start living it. Performance
and example will teach more than promise and theory. Rather than practice what they
preach, Hygienists should rather preach only that which they practice.
The mature and evolved Hygienist truly possesses a rare capacity to contribute to the
happiness and creativitv of human beings. He has learned how to share his unique
knowledge and experience with others. He carries with ease his accelerated freedom
of inquiry, and more often through analysis heads off impending paralysis. He
emphasizes cooperation because he knows that competition usually puts men in
opposition to each other. He customarily carries in his knapsack values that can
contribute to the happiness and creativeness in human beings living together. He tries to
minimize conflict, anxiety, insecurity. Altruism rather than egoism is the dominant motive
of his behavior.

Celebrating community
Because the biological nature of man is directed toward relatedness as a process of
living, the Natural Hygienist knows that it is unnatural and unhealthy to be and feel
alone. He has a deep sense of responsibility to man. He must become more neighborly.
He must become increasingly less private and more public. He must ever remain
entrenched in the fellowship of man.

Review's carrying out what they conceive to be the plain teachings of Hygiene, we
Home Page realize fully how wrong it is for the beginner in Hygiene to attempt to care for
his own needs in any serious state of impaired health. When, through his own
errors and misapplications and misunderstandings, he grows worse instead of
better, he is sure to place the responsibility for his worse trouble upon Hygiene
rather than upon his own misconceptions and misuses.
I receive frequent requests to give advice by mail. So many misconceptions
arise out of the descriptions these people provide of their condition and they
misconstrue the simplest advice to such an extent that such care is not
satisfactory There is another weighty factor in this matter that must always be
considered: it is the strong tendency of almost everyone, in a crisis, to become
alarmed and to have recourse to a physician, to a pill, or to some non-Hygienic
mode of treatment, so that it is not wise to attempt to advise the sick by mail.
They will resort to other than Hygienic measures first and inform you of their
actions after it is over Not only does this help to convince them that Hygiene is
wrong, but, by thus playing into the hands of the enemies of Hygiene, they lend
ammunition to the enemy.

Anything that is worth doing is worth doing right and if Hygiene possesses the
value we attribute to it, it should be properly applied and not left in the hands of
the ignorant and half-informed. The individual who falls into excesses in his
application of Hygiene or who neglects some important part of it through
ignorance or laziness can do both himself and Hygiene great harm. There is a
great tendency in a large percentage of people to be carried away by what
they conceive to be the most important part of Hygiene. I once was called to
see a dying baby whose parents had permitted themselves to be carried away
by their idea that man should live on fruits alone. The mother could not nurse
the baby, due, primarily, to the inadequacies of her own diet. No doubt the
baby had been born feeble because of the same inadequacies. They had
attempted to rear the child on a diet of juices. It had received no protein from
any source. It died in a few hours after I saw it. Such misconceptions and
faulty applications do Hygiene much damage.

Among my valued friends of yesteryear was a woman who was enthusiastic

about Hygiene. She underwent a fast at home without supervision. She had
fasted enough and she knew enough about the process to have done this
successfully. But, from some source, not from any Hygienic source, she
acquired the idea that in order to really cleanse her body she had to abstain
from water as well as from food. According to the information I received, she
went twenty-four days without water. By this time she was so weak and her
condition was such that her family persuaded her to let them call a physician.
One was called but he could do nothing or did nothing that was of any value.
She died on the thirtieth day of the fast. Her death added another splotch on
the escutcheon of Hygiene despite the fact that what she did was not Hygienic.

Neophytes in Hygiene are prone to take their "hygiene" from many sources.
They are not careful to discriminate between Hygiene and what may, to them,
appear to be the same thing. They go searching through all kinds of literature
and attempt to select for themselves what is good and to reject what is not
good. This process is successful only in the case of the individual who has the
background essential to the requisite discrimination. Without a knowledge of
physiology and biology, without a knowledge of the basic principles of Hygiene,
these neophytes go scampering off through the fields in search of flowers and
often come up with their feet filled with thorns.

"Unlike the systems of cure, Hygiene is for both the

well and the sick."

Enthusiasm leads many into error. Enthusiasm is a splendid thing and we need
to encourage it in everyone. But enthusiasm must be mated with knowledge
and judgment if it is not to lead us astray. Give us more enthusiasm, but along
with it give us more understanding and more power of discrimination. I see
people who become so enthusiastic about fasting that they attempt to
substitute fasting for a normal way of life. They undergo frequent fasts,
because they live between the fasts in such a way as to make frequent fasts
necessary If these people will learn moderation and self-control they will not
need so many fasts. Nor is fasting a satisfactory substitute for a way of life
that accords with the laws of life. Fasting should be thought of as an expedient
that may be avoided by correct living.

Then there is the man who becomes so enthusiastic about sun bathing that he
spends hours in the sun. He bakes and broils himself until he is black, his skin
is dry and parched, he is enervated and toxemic as a result of such excesses.
With the exception of food and water of which we are advised to take habitual
excesses, the so-called scientific world seems to be bent on trying to get us to
try to get along on inadequate quantities of everything that we require. We are
often told that we can get all the sunshine we need through our hands and
face, even, it seems, if these are in the sun but little. We should avoid making
the mistake of going to the other extreme.

All the Hygienic factors are related elements in a vital reciprocity. The amount
of one that we need is commensurate with the amount of the other that we
take. More food and less exercise lead to fatness, weakness, indolence and
ultimate disease. Food intake and exercise should bear a definite relation to
each other Our need for rest and sleep is commensurate with our mental,
physical and physiological activities. Our need for air is commensurate with our
physical activities. So, also, our need for sun is commensurate with our nutritive
activities. Overeating and lying in the shade build weakness and disease, not
health and strength. The one-method approach to the problems of health and
sickness, as the enthusiast is so often likely to make, is, for this reason,
doomed to failure.

There is also very often a lack of understanding of what can and cannot be
accomplished. The poisons of the physicians and the knives of the surgeons
often cause enough ravages to the body that complete recovery is not
possible. The same thing is true of the toxins that are the primary cause of the
patient's illness. Especially in long standing chronic disease do we observe
organic changes that are not reparable. The enthusiast is often unwilling to
recognize limitations to the possibilities of repair and regeneration. So far I
have not run into one of these who expected the body to grow a new leg or a
new arm that had been lost, but they expect the same thing in other parts of
the body. As the years go by and my experiences and observations broaden, I
become more firmly convinced that it is impossible to administer poisons to the
sick, whether in acute or chronic disease, without producing harm. This is true
even in those cases where, on the surface, they appear to be beneficial. If
their administration is continued over a considerable period of time, irreparable
damages result.

There is no state of impaired health, whatever name may be given to the

complex of symptoms that may be present, and no stage of this illness, in
which the greatest possible assistance to the restorative operations of the
body cannot be given by means of Hygiene. But there are many stages of
organic deterioration in which this greatest possible assistance is not enough.
The impairment has gone beyond the point of possible vital redemption; the
pathological evolution has passed the point of irreversibility. In most cases a
measure of comfort may be afforded the patient without making a dope addict
out of him and life may be prolonged. He may even be restored to usefulness
and enabled to enjoy life again, but he will not get well.

My telephone rings; I answer it. It is a long distance call from Chicago, New
York or elsewhere. A voice on the other end of the line says: "I have my
mother on a fast. This is her thirty-fifth day. We are following your book. But
we do not know whether to break the fast or let her fast longer. What do you
advise?" I ask the needed questions to get some idea of the condition of the
fasting woman and give what advice I can. But they were not following my
book. Repeatedly my book stresses the need of competent supervision in long
fasts. Especially does it insist upon such supervision in older people. Were they
following the book the ignorant and inexperienced would not attempt to conduct
a long fast.

I receive a letter from a mother who tells me that she is feeding her baby
according to instructions contained in my book, The Hygienic Care of Children.
She has run into trouble and she wants to know what to do. She details the
manner in which she is feeding the baby and I do not recognize the feeding
program as anything I ever advised in writing or by any other means. It is safe
to say that these mothers have read several books, perhaps mine being the
only work on Hygiene, and have tried to combine in some fashion the
information and advice they received from these several sources. Hygiene and
Hygienists should not be held responsible for the results of such mixings of
Hygiene with whatever else may appeal to the intelligence of beginners.

Hygiene is easily adapted to circumstances, but this adaptation, especially in

the care of the sick, requires more knowledge than the average person
possesses. Yet, curiously enough, a flying visit to a Hygienic institution or the
reading of a book or two on the subject has been thought of as enough to
qualify a man or a woman to apply Hygienic means to the needs of the sick
organism. Uneducated laymen have attempted to blossom out as fully
competent Hygienists. Some of these have taken the sick into their homes and
attempted to care for them, to fast them and feed them and in other ways to
care for them Hygienically. Credit is due to the great virtue of Hygiene that,
even in such untrained and inexperienced hands, it has frequently been very
successful. But it should be understood by all beginners in Hygiene that no
general rules and no number of examples will apply to the peculiarities of every
sick person. This is precisely the reason that the guidance of a competent and
experienced man or woman is so vitally important in the recovery of health.

I appeal to beginners in Hygiene everywhere to give Hygiene a fair chance and

not discredit it by faulty application and by mixing it with a lot of un-Hygienic
measures that vitiate its effects. Don't indulge in any foolish experiments with
your health. If you are in need of care, get it from a competent Hygienist and
don't run the risk of injuring yourself by faulty applications of Hygiene. If your
knowledge of Hygiene is meager, if you are inexperienced, if you are in doubt,
secure the guidance of one who is trained and experienced in Hygienic work.
This not only gives Hygiene a chance to do the most for you, it also gives you a
chance to get the most out of Hygiene.
