Deep Freeze Heroes Story and photos by Ricky J. Carrasco

During the Deep Freeze of

2011, most El Pasoans found
themselves at home trying to
stay warm, perhaps under the
covers, with cups of hot cof-

off. All El Paso area schools
were cancelled for almost a
week and many businesses
advised their employees to
stay home in the name of
safety.

But for some, the

hours of difficult, often dan-

workers from across the Bor-

A Good Winter
Means Lot’s of
Water!
A reader of Spotlight El Paso emailed me a few
weeks ago wondering about water run-off this Spring
from the snow pack in Southern Colorado and North-
ern New Mexico. We always hope for good winter
snows up north since, when spring arrives, the melt-
ing that takes place transfers this water to Colorado,
New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. The agreement be-
tween these states and Mexico allows for a certain amount of water that is
released and shared. So, Elephant Butte gets a certain amount as does Ca-
ballo and all other entities involved. This is something that our farmers,
ranchers, utility officials and those of you who love to spend time at Ele-
phant Butte and Caballo lake reservoir look forward to.

February 26, 2011, 2:00 pm
Free Admission
Please join Guest Curator Nicholas P. Houser for a free Zip Tour of his exhibit, Settle-
ment Legacy: Native Americans of the Pass of the North at 2 pm on Saturday,
February 26, 2011 at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology.

The exhibit, including historic images and cultural artifacts, tells the dramatic story of
the foundation of today’s El Paso-Ciudad Juárez region which originates with the
Manso, Suma, Piro, and Tigua Indians who, over four centuries ago, founded the
missions and pueblos that evolved into our sister cities. It is dedicated to the Tigua
Indians of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, but also recognizes the contributions of all of the
area’s native people.

Reservations are not necessary, but contact the museum if you plan to attend,
