What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
understand and appreciate literary texts in various genres across national
literature and cultures. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed
to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module contains the lesson on 21st Century Literary Genres Across the
Globe. After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. identify the 21st century literary genres and their elements, structure, and
traditions of the literature across the world; and
2. compare and contrast various 21st century literary genres and their
elements, structures, and traditions from across the globe.

What I Know

Read the passage below and write the appropriate word/s in each blank. Choose

21st century literature are literary works created within the last decade.
These are written by authors who do not follow the conventions in writing, and
create new (1) ________ by using styles and techniques in writing that are more
suitable for readers in the 21st century. Many authors now have the access to

Literature continues to develop and improve up to this day and we must embrace
the changes that come with it. With so many writers emerging from different
places comes new and more creative genres of literature across the globe. Are
you ready to know more about this?

Hi! Before we proceed with the lesson, let us first recall what has been discussed
in the previous module. There are two columns presented below. Column A

contains literary works they have written. Match Column A with Column B

Did You Know?


In the activity that you have just finished, there are three (3) literary
genres that have been introduced. Flash fiction, doodle fiction, and
graphic stories are a few of the many literary genres that are prevalent
in the 21st century. As we proceed with the module, you will discover
more about 21st century literary genres and their elements, structures,
and traditions!

What is It

Literary Genre
This is referred to as the form, content, and style of literary pieces. Poetry,
fiction, non-fiction, and drama are the four main genres of literature which differ
in features and functions. With the existence of media in the 21st century, there
are many new literary styles and forms that authors have formulated, thus,
making media the newest type of literature.

Poetry
This is a genre of literature that follows a certain rhythmic pattern and
meter. However, with the changing times, poetry can now be written in
free-form. Imagery and metaphor are mostly used when writing poetry as
poetry are written to be figurative in nature.
Elements: rhythm, meter, rhyme, rhyme scheme, theme, symbolism,
imagery
Types: poem, song, haiku, sonnet, spoken poetry, reverse poetry, acrostic
poems

Fiction
This is a genre of literature that is produced by the imagination of the
author; thus, the characters, settings, and plot are only invented by the
author himself. It is written in the natural flow of speech, following the
ordinary grammatical structure.
Elements: characters, setting, plot, conflict, theme, point of view, symbol
Types: science fiction, doodle fiction, graphic novels, flash fiction, short
story, novels, romance, fantasy

Non-Fiction
This is the broadest form of literature. Much like fiction, this genre of
literature is written in the natural flow of speech, following a grammatical
structure. The difference is that non-fiction is based on facts or scientific
investigation. The purpose of this genre is to provide information or
educate the readers.
Elements: author’s tone, voice
Types: letter, journal, biography, autobiography, essay, article

Drama
This is a genre of literature that is made to be performed. It is mostly
known as plays. This is written in dialogue format.
Elements: plot, dialogue, characters, action, conflict, staging, theme
Types: tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, melodrama

Media
This is the newest genre of literature. It relies merely on technology. In the
21st century, more and more literary styles occurring in the media are
being developed and created since it is accessible for a wide array of
readers.
Types: digi-fiction, hyper poetry, blogs, vlogs, TV shows, films, movies,
commercials, billboard, radio programs, websites, book-format blogs, text-
talk novels, manga
