The Dresden Codex: The Two Bound Together

The “S” shaped signs at the top of the scene are the signs (black) for brought up and and down. The 
fact they are dark (black) means, in the darkness. The black Circular (locational/the one) signs tend 
to give the “S” signs the appearance of two Eyes. The (white) “U” shaped areas, on their side, are in 
the Form of Long Legs with Feet meaning, a long turning journey. The Dotted Lines around the 
“S” shapes mean, moisture paths. There are two such signs one over each figure. The two taken up  
and down in the darkness, the pathways of moisture. We know, from past translations, that gesture 
signs were made with both the left hand and the right hand. The left side indicated the direction east 
while the right indicated the direction west.

When we look at the figures we see that they are sitting, back to back, which means they are waiting 
and facing in opposite directions, east and west.

Illustration 4: Signs Between The 
Figures
In order to determine what the two figures represent we must look at the signs between them, their 
shared signs. Starting at the top we see the (blue) Circle indicating a location and numerically the 
number, one. Just below is a larger sign (yellow) that is the gesture sign for a star. Because of its 
relative size it is a great star (Venus). Below the star is a Rectangle (green) that indicates a place.

Next we find (light blue) the two Circular signs that by the compounding of signs equates to, the 
great one, his turning place. Next we have the (light green) signs for, the Eyes (the Eyes of the Sun). 
We then find a repeat of the (light blue) Circular signs forming the “U” shaped turning signs and 
the small, Rectangular, place signs. The place signs are in the lower part of the Circle of the higher 
signs and in the upper part of the lower signs. This, effectively makes the “U” shaped turning signs 
into turning above and turning below. These signs are separate on each side of the individual 
figure's backs but then join together into one Triangular (female) spirit sign. This spirit sign (shades 
of blue) is a Face meaning, his appearance. The eyes of the spirit (positional) and the Mouth (a 
source of water) combine to create the spirit face. The Mouth is further divided into a “U” shaped 
turning sign interlocked with the sign for a Tumi knife( the sign for a warrior). Then on each side of 
the spirit face are three Circles (the necklace) each counting as a location and the number one. The 
Three stands as shorthand for, the many.

The many signs (yellow circles) combined with the line of the figure's backs is the gesture sign for 
distant or far. These signs are attached to the Imagery of Hands (tan) that mean the Hands of the 
Sun or the Stewards of the Sun (Sun Priests). The Back Line is positioned below the spirit face. The 
Belt that binds the two figure's together as one is two horizontal place signs (green) and one 
vertical place sign (lighter green) that divides the Imagery of two Eyes. The Eyes are, roughly, 
square which may indicate the house or domains of the Eyes, (the Eyes of the Sun, Venus). The 
Pupils of the Eyes are created from the signs for dark, earth­female and the Circular location/the 
one sign. Double Lines are Formed by the (green) horizontal place signs (above and below the Eye 
signs) indicating, unseen. Below the Belt is another Vertical Line meaning, below. This Line splits 
into two at the (brown) earth­female sign. Thus indicating, on the sides of the earth.

 Illustration 6: The Houses
Beneath the Feet of the figures is an upside down “L” shaped section that is created out of a (light 
yellow) horizontal place sign and a vertical place sign. These signs appear to Form a Wall and a 
Roof perhaps meaning some kind leanto like shelter. Many glyphs similar to this (without the 
Double Lines) can be found with a figure sitting under it. Within the places signs there are five 
Square (house) signs. These signs are surrounded by (pale yellow) Double Lines indicating they are 
unseen.

The Large Square beneath the roof means, the great house. On the right side is a (white) place sign 
broken up by the “X” into a Large Triangular (brown) earth­female sign. The Large “X” (green) 
sign for the great transformation.  Behind the “X” is the (blue) sign for flowing water. The Leftward 
leaning angle means, stopped. The upper right leg (angled right meaning, waiting) of the “X” is 
attached to the Eye, (the Eye of the Sun ­­Venus) The Pupil of the Eye is not clear enough to 
determine its meaning. Beneath (below) the Eye is the Form of a Knife (meaning a Ray of the Sun, 
a warrior).

Beneath the Knife is the Form of a Large (relative size) Phallus indicating, the great male or the 
great man. The Phallus contains the Feet and Long Legs  (long journeys or long walks)  in an upside 
down position (indicating, dead).

Houses or Domains

In the upper left corner of the shelter there is a house sign with the Form (green) of an “X” 
indicating. transformation. The long green place sign that makes up one leg of the “X” has the 
Stance of a rightward leaning Angle meaning, waiting. The rightward (meaning, stopped) leaning 
leg of the “X” is broken into two places signs. The (brown) Triangular signs mean the earth­female.  
Since the earth­female signs are all around the place signs meaning, earth­female places in all 
directions –everywhere.

Unseen Face

The two vertical place signs (light green) act as Double Lines making the internal Face (his 
appearance) unseen or hidden. The Forehead of the Face has the “T” shaped sign for, below the 
surface on it. This line may be a bit damaged by time and may have extended to the Triangular 
(earth­female) Nose. The Face around the Eyes (Venus) are four Feet. The upper two Feet (tan) are 
upside down and indicate, the walk of the dead. The lower two feet (darker tan) are positioned as 
walking on the sides (of the earth­female, the brown Triangle) Together these two pairs of feet form 
the “X” for transformation. The Mouth (a water source, pink) of the Face has two lines that suggest 
Teeth which is the sign for a doorway or a portal. The upper lip of the Mouth forms the lintel of the 
posts of the doorway sign. The Eyes (white) are Fingers pointing a direction, here. The Finger on 
the left terminates in a dark location/number one sign while the Finger on the right points to a dark 
place sign.

The Cave

While we cannot translate this entire House glyph due to unrecognized or damaged parts in the 
bottom section of the glyph we can see that the, Double Lined, (unseen) cave sign (yellow) has 
within it the same statement as found in the first House glyph we translated.
