Archaea are microorganisms that define the limits of life on Earth.

They were originally discovered and

described in extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents and terrestrial hot springs. They were
also found in a diverse range of highly saline, acidic, and anaerobic environments.

Bacteria are economically important as these microorganisms are used by humans for many purposes.
The beneficial uses of bacteria include the production of traditional foods such as yogurt, cheese, and
vinegar. Microbes are also important in agriculture for the compost and fertilizer production.

Fungi are responsible for breaking down organic matter and releasing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and
phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere.Fungi are essential to many household and industrial
processes, notably the making of bread, wine, beer, and certain cheeses.

Plants maintain the atmosphere. They produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide during
photosynthesis. Plants provide many products for human use, such as firewood, timber, fibers,
medicines, dyes, pesticides, oils, and rubber. Plants create habitats for many organisms.

Animals are our companions, our workers, our eyes and ears, and our food. They appear in ancient cave
paintings, and on modern commercial farms. We have domesticated some of them, while others remain
wild and are sometimes endangered by our activities.

Minerals are those elements on the earth and in foods that our bodies need to develop and function
normally. Those essential for health include calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride,
magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, chromium, copper, fluoride, molybdenum, manganese, and selenium.

pH is an important quantity that reflects the chemical conditions of a solution. The pH can control the
availability of nutrients, biological functions, microbial activity, and the behavior of chemicals.

Humidity plays an important role for surface life. For animal life dependent on perspiration (sweating) to
regulate internal body temperature, high humidity impairs heat exchange efficiency by reducing the rate
of moisture evaporation from skin surfaces.

Temperature is important because it is something we feel. We have to adjust our housing and clothing
to it if we live in different places or at different times of year. If we get too cold or too hot we cannot
survive. But heat from the sun also evaporates water from the ground and drives the water cycle.
We all need oxygen for respiration. The animals that live both on land and even the aquatic animals
need oxygen to exist otherwise they would all perish. Air is the fundamental building block, apart from
which life itself would not exist.
