Currently, possible topics may cover areas of social security and insurance reform, corporate risk
management, insurance company management and practices, and regulatory environment of
insurance and risk management.
Learning Outcomes
1. Understand the theory and the practice of insurance regulation. Be able to analyze the
culture and economic environment that affect the insurance regulation system.
2. Apply the theory to compare the different characteristics of the Hong Kong insurance
regulation with the Chinese Insurance Law.
3. Use the risk management concept and skill to analyze the insurance company’s risk
management strategy.
4. Catch the key problems of health insurance reform in Hong Kong and around the world.
5. Identify the types of insurance fraud and the relevant prevention methods.

1. Individual project report requires to compare the different Characteristics of Hong Kong
insurance regulation with Chinese Insurance Law.
2. Problem based continuous assessment used to measure students’ ability to solve various
insurance companies’ risk management problems.
3. Class exercises and group discussion with presentations to facilitate the understanding
the key problems that pension and health insurance reform in Hong Kong and around the
world.
4. Group project report requires team to address the types of Insurance fraud and relevant
prevention methods.
5. Company visits related to the special and important topics in risk and insurance
management enhance students understanding of the issues. By raising relevant questions
during the visits and compiling report after the visits require students to grasp the
essence of the issues studied.
Indicative Content
Lecture will select relevant topics. The current topics may include:
Chinese insurance market development: the Chinese insurance law in 1995 and 2002 versions;
the new regulation philosophy in China; WTO and open market policy in China.
Hong Kong insurance market: Characteristics of Hong Kong insurance regulation, Insurance
training and education in Hong Kong and around world, insurance cycle in Hong Kong.

Teaching Method
The course will be taught by structured lectures, and class discussion. Theoretical inputs will be
provided through lectures. Class activities include group discussions and case studies, students
will develop in analytical and diagnostic approach to special topics in risk and insurance
management.
Assessment
Important Note: Students shall be aware of the University regulations about dishonest
practice in course work and the possible consequences as stipulated in the Regulations
Governing University Examinations.
The assessment of the field study project will consist of a combined grade of the written report
and student presentation. There will also be a continuous assessment, based on performance of a
variety of exercise assignments as well as class participation and attendance.
