17.09 – 23.09.2020
1) The reporter and his imaginary friends who came to visit him a few days later,
beginning with:
- So, now you find no story in Tripp’s story…
- Yes, and I’m awfully angry with him!
- But how did it happen? Did he tell you a story of the girl from the village?...
2) Tripp and his imaginary friends who came to visit him a few days later, beginning
with:
- So, now you have severed contact with Ada…
- Yes, and she is going to marry a farmer next Thursday, by the way…
- But how did it happen? Why didn’t you tell her who you were?...
Exercise №6: Read the dialogues. Practice it in pairs or group of three and group of
four and then change roles.
2. Tripp: What could I do? I took her to a boarding- house on Thirty-second Street
where I used to live, and hocked her. I’ll show you the house
Reporter: What words are these, Tripp. I thought you said you had a story. Every
ferryboat that crosses the East River brings or takes away girls from Long Island
Tripp: Can’t you see. What a ratting fine story it would make? You could do it
fine
Reporter: What are you thinking?
Tripp: All about the romance, you know, and describe the girl, and put a lot of
stuff in it about true love. You ought to get fifteen dollars out of it, anyhow. And
it'll cost you only about four dollars
Reporter: How will it cost me four dollars?
18
Tripp: One dollar to Mrs. McGinnis, and two dollars to pay the girl's fare back
home.
Reporter: And the fourth dimension?
Tripp: One dollar to me. For whiskey. Are you on?
3. Tripp: He’s wise to a lot of things, and he’ll tell you now what’s best to do
Reporter: Why--er--Miss Lowery. I am at your service, of course, but--er--as I
haven't been apprized of the circumstances of the case, I--er—
Miss Lowery: Oh. It ain't as bad as that. And I met Mr.--Mr. Snip on the street
and asked him about a friend of mine, and he brought me here and asked me to
wait
Tripp: I advise you, Miss Lowery, to tell Mr. Chalmers all. And he’ll give you
the right tip
Miss Lowery: Why, certainly
4. Tripp: Now, Miss Lowery. You like this young man, Hiram Dodd, don’t you?
He’s all right, and good to you, ain’t he?
Miss Lowery: Of course I like him. He’s all right. And of course he’s good to
me. So is everybody. But …last night got to thinking about George
Tripp: Go on, Mr. Chalmers. And tell the lady what’s the proper caper. That’s
what I told her- you’d hand it to her straight. Spiel up
Reporter: Miss Lowery, life is rather a queer proposition, after all. Those whom
we first love we seldom wed. Our earlier romances, tinged with the magic
radiance of youth, often fail to materialize."
Miss Lowery: But somehow I couldn’t stop thinking about George.
5. Miss Lowery: I've got mine at home now in a ring-box in the top drawer of my
dresser. I guess I was silly to come up here looking for him. I never realized what
a big place it is.
Tripp: Oh, the boys from the country forget a lot when they come to the city.
May be, he met another girl or something. You come back home, and you’ll be
all right.
Tripp: Can’t you get a story out of it? Some sort of a story?
Reporter: Not a line
Tripp: I’m sorry.
Story-teller: Then Tripp unbuttoned his shabby coat to get something that had
once been a handkerchief. As he did so I saw something shining on his cheap
watch-chain. It has the half of a silver cent that had been cut in halves with a
chisel.
Reporter: What?! Is that you?!!
Tripp: Oh yes,
Story-teller: George Brown, or Tripp. What’s the use? The reporter took a dollar
from his pocket and unhesitatingly put it in Tripp’s hand.

1)
- Hi. Long time no see, Chalmers
So, Do you find no story in Tripp’s story now?
- Yes, and I’m awfully angry with him!
- But how did it happen? Did he tell you a story of the girl from the village?
- Yes, he did. Even he asked me to spend three dollars on the girl
- Why? Who’s she?
- Her name’s Ada, and he went to New York to look for George Brown
- That sounds interesting.
- You know , I was ashamed when Tripp called me “friend”. He tried to advise her to
forget the man and come back home to prepare for the upcoming wedding
- Did you persuade her to go back home?
- Ah, yeah. At last she agreed. But after that, I saw half a dime hanging on a chain
across Tripp’s vest. It was in fact that he was who the girl was looking for, George
Brown.
- Amazing. Now I can see the reason.
2.
- So, now you have severed contact with Ada
- Yeah, of course. She is going to marry a farmer next Thursday, by the way
- But how did it happen? Why didn’t you tell her who you were?
- For what? The man, who she is going to marry, is the best option for her.
- But you promised to be true to each other?
- Look at the present me! I can’t bring happiness to her. I can’t give her an automobile
as I promised.
- Do you like her as she likes you?
- Yes, of course. That’s why I told her a lie. After all, I hope she finds another man
better than me
- I’m sure she will never thank you for that.

1. - Mr. Towers Chandler works in an architect's office for $18 per week. He has a
routine where he sets aside one dollar per week so that at the end of ten weeks he can
take his ten dollars and have his night on the town. He plugs away from day to day in a
professional environment, pays his bills, and saves money for the things that are
important to him
Mr. Chandler lived for this opportunity to put on his finest suit, take a cab to a fine
restaurant, and pretend that he was part of the monied and leisure class. The story is
explicit that Mr. Chandler enjoyed being seen dressed in his finery.
- Some ideas help inject a bit of excitement into dull daily routine. Let’s have a
look:
• Dedicate time to a hobby
• Change it up
• Go to a spa
• Go fishing
• Go on a road trip
• Go camping
• Go to the cinema
2. “It is wrong to pretend to be someone you aren't”
- In our story Miss Marion had an innocent reason to be "dressed down.".
- We can say that Mr. Chandler was doing many things well in that he had saved
his money for a night of fun as he lived out an innocent fantasy - so far so good. To save
up some money for recreation, see nothing wrong there. His failure was to lie and to
pretend that he was someone he wasn't. Mr. Chandler denied having ambition, but he
had plenty of it. He has a focus in his life.
3. Miss Marion's attitude about the perfect husband is very instructive. She pictures
herself participating with her mate in some long-term goal, a life's work, some endeavor
larger than herself. She wasn't interested in a life of pleasure but in a life of purpose. If
only Mr. Chandler had realized that he had some qualities that Miss Marion would find
attractive.

Anna: Oh, sometimes I draw, sometimes I watch TV. And you. Lia, how do you
usually spend your weekends?

Sport”, “Great
Britain”, “Holidays” и “Russia”.
