 The Researcher would first and foremost like to thank god who gave me the strength, courage,
wisdom and understanding for making this project successful. Secondly like to thank my parents
and family members for helping me to complete this project. Third like to thank miss Bromfield
for giving us this opportunity to this project that we can learn more about our history thank you.
INTRODUCTION

This project is about the Berbice rebellion in the 1763 which is on the plantation Magdalen
Enberg on the canje river in Berbice which the rebellion protests harsh and inhumane treatment,
and after plantation fell to the slave. The Dutch settle fled northward and the rebels began to take
over control of the region.
QUESTION

1: Why was there a slave revolt in Berbice in 1763?


On 23 February 1763, slave on the plantation Magdalen Enberg on the canje river in Berbice
rebelled against protesting harsh and inhumane treatment. As plantation after plantation fell to
the slave, the Dutch settlers fled northward and the rebels began to take over control of the
region. The rebel were mostly African-born slaves from private plantations along the canje and
Berbice river. Kofi [chuffy], and Akan slave, emerged as commander of the Berbice contingent
and led the rebellion. The rebels intended to overthrow the or short of that to partition the colony
between the African and Dutch.

2: Why were the slaves successful during the early stages of the revolt?
In 1762, a slave rebellion of 36 male and female slave occurred on Berbice, then a Dutch colony.
But after the slaves repelled a militia force sent by the governor van Hohenheim, the rebellion
was finally repressed by a stronger force of the Dutch militia. Some of the slaves escaped but at
least one was executed. The rebels had most success in the south-eastern county of wax ford
where they seized control of the county, but a series of bloody defeats at the battle of new Ross,
battle of arowana battle of uncloudy prevented the effective spread of the rebellion beyond the
county borders.

Explain why the Berbice revolt failed?


The Berbice revolt failed due to divisions among the rebels and a failure to seize on momentum.

CONCLUSION

In this conclusion the Berbice rebellion in the 1763.Where the slave on the plantation were
protest harsh inhumane treatment. the enslave population drove out the French and British and
set up the first black republic.
