U-Roy dies at 78

E wart "U-Roy" Beckford, who trans-

formed the Jamaican art of toasting,
or deejaying, from a sound system phe-
nomenon into a hit-making art form that
deeply influenced generations of dancehall
artists as well as the formation of early hip-
hop, has died.
He was 78 years old.
The veteran toaster died on February 17, 2021 at
the University Hospital of the West Indies after under-
going surgery. He suffered from diabetes, high blood
pressure, and kidproblems with his kidney prior to his
death and had been undergoing surgery at that hospital.
U-Roy started toasting in 1961, rising through the
ranks to become the top deejay on dub innovator King
Tubby's prominent sound system, Hometown Hi-Fi, in Ewart "U-Roy" Beckford

a record, gave toasters like U-Roy the oppor-
tunity to fully display their vocal finesse.
Singer John Holt had observed U-Roy toasting
live on an instrumental version of Holt's single
"Wear You To the Ball," produced by Duke
Reid. Holt told Reid to bring U-Roy in the stu-
dio; his productions with U-Roy spawned the
radio singles "Wear You to the Ball," "Wake
the Town" and "Rule the Nation."
Among those paying tribute were Shaggy,
Sean Paul, Spice and Bugle, who all took to
social media to send their condolences.
Beckford was awarded the Order of Dis-
tinction in 2007 by the Jamaican government
for his contribution to music.
'U Roy' will be laid to rest on March 28.
Fans and peers can pay their final respects
to the beloved 'toaster' when his body lies in
state at the National Arena on March 25.

Caribbean COVID-19 Deaths Now Over 7,500

in the Caribbean region puts the number at
over 7,500 as of February 22.
The actual tally is 7,529 and includes
deaths in the Caribbean US territories of
Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A man who was found guilty of fleeing
after causing a fatal crash has been
jailed in Miami after he fled the country to
escape his sentence more than twenty
years ago.
Christover Harvey was arrested on
January 31, 1999 after fleeing the scene
following a car crash that killed three peo-
ple.
Darlin Bueno, Becky Ballestas Mar-
quez and Maria Arandaans, ages 24, 37
and 24, respectively, had been returning
home from a gathering after midnight.
Harvey was traveling westbound at an
estimated speed of 75 miles per hour on
Northwest 199th Street when he failed to
stop at a red flashing light and crossed
Northwest 37th Avenue.
He collided with the women’s car,
which was traveling southbound on North-
west 37th Avenue. The three women did
not survive their injuries.
Harvey fled the scene and did not at-
tempt to call for help for the victims. He
was found guilty by a criminal court and
sentenced to more than 12 years in prison.
He was given until June 1, 2000 to
“get his affairs in order” and turn himself
in to serve his sentence. He instead fled the
country.
In 2007, authorities received a tip that
he was in Cuba, but extradition was not
possible. In 2019, he was located in Ja-
maica and taken into custody by Jamaican
authorities.
They returned him to Miami, where
he is now serving his sentence.

and the commitment of the U.S. Marshals
Service Fugitive Task Force, the Depart-
ment of Justice’s Office of International
Affairs, the Jamaica Constabulary Force,

Homeland Security Investigations,
Christopher Harvey will now see the jus-
tice he so long sought to avoid,” said State
Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.
“Today is certainly a day these victim-
ized families have long waited to see.”

Puerto Rico ranks second with 1,983
deaths while Jamaica is third with 399
deaths.

G overnor Andrew M. Cuomo recently
encourages eligible New Yorkers in
Brooklyn and Queens to schedule an ap-
pointment to receive the COVID-19 vac-
cine at the two State-FEMA
community-based vaccination sites sched-
uled to open on Wednesday at Medgar
Evers and York Colleges.
The Queens and Brooklyn sites will
operate between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily
and each site has the capacity to administer
3,000 doses per day.
"The State is committed to vaccinating
all New Yorkers, and that means making a
concerted effort to reach those communi-
ties which have been underserved by the
traditional health care system," Governor
Cuomo said. "If we are to truly be success-
ful in winning this war once and for all, we
need to make sure shots are going into arms
everywhere, regardless of race, background
or income, and these sites are critical com-
ponents of that effort. I encourage all eligi-
ble New Yorkers in Brooklyn and Queens

to sign up for vaccination appointments at
these sites using phone banking. These new

bring the vaccine to communities under-
served by traditional health care institu-
tions.

schedule appointments for the Brooklyn
and Queens sites by utilizing New York's
'Am I Eligible' website or by calling the
state's COVID-19 Vaccination Hotline at 1-

A quarantined JetBlue employee,
who had taken to Instagram Live
to falsely portray the image that she
was kidnapped in Jamaica, has been
fired.
The airline said it fired Kalina Collier
Tuesday. Collier, an American, had tested
positive for the coronavirus and was under-
going mandatory quarantine room at the
Ocean Coral Spring in Jamaica before
being allowed to fly back to the U.S. where
everyone entering the country is required
to show a negative COVID-19 test.

But she took to Instagram to suggest
she was being held in a hotel room on the
island against her will, which resulted in
the hashtag #FindKalinaCollier to go viral.
She also falsely claimed that she was
being filmed by several cameras in a hotel
room – the devices were actually sprin-
klers.
The island’s minister of tourism was
forced to make a public announcement
about the matter and disclose that Collier
had actually tested positive for the coron-
avirus and was undergoing mandatory
quarantine.
The airline, meanwhile, also issued an
apology to the Jamaican people and gov-
ernment for the “concern and frustration”
the incident with Collier caused.
Collier, meanwhile, is back in the US
and has returned to Instagram after report-
edly removing the initial videos she posted
to the platform from her hotel room. She
maintains that she was negative for
COVID but specifies that she was “never
missing or kidnapped.”

N ew York Attorney General Letitia James
served a lawsuit against Amazon on
Wednesday over the company's alleged failure
to provide proper pandemic health and safety
measures for employees at two New York City
facilities, prompting the e-commerce giant to
quickly remove the case to federal court.
Amazon was hit with a suit from New
York's attorney general that claims the e-com-
merce giant failed to institute proper health and
safety measures for employees during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
James alleged in the suit, which was filed
Tuesday, that throughout the coronavirus pan-
demic, Amazon has "repeatedly and persist-
ently" failed to institute reasonable and
adequate measures to protect its workers from
the spread of the virus at a fulfillment center on
Staten Island and a distribution center in
Queens.
"Amazon has cut corners in complying
with the particular requirements that would
most jeopardize its sales volume and produc-
tivity rates, thereby ensuring outsize profits at
an unprecedented rate of growth for the com-
pany and its shareholders," James said in the
complaint.

more than $130 billion in profits from online
sales during the pandemic at the expense of
workers who have experienced a significant
risk of COVID-19 infection while on the job.
Those profits represent 35% growth from Ama-
zon's prepandemic earnings and a 10% higher
growth rate than in previous years, according

O ne thousand two hundred students are
to receive tablet computers donated by
persons in the diaspora, through a drive
spearheaded by Jamaica’s Consul General
to New York, Allison Wilson.
The effort is spearheaded by the Min-
istry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade;
the Ministry of Education, Youth and Infor-
mation, and the National Education Trust
(NET).
Addressing a handover ceremony at
the Education Ministry in Kingston, on
February 16, Minister of Foreign Affairs
and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina John-
son Smith, said the initiative emanated
from an appeal by the Government for sup-
port, adding that more tablets will be
shipped to the island, so that “more young
lives” will benefit.

the Town of Chester talks black history

J amaican-born County Legislature Noel
Spencer is this month (February) cele-
brating the 15th Anniversary of the County
of Orange's Black History Month recogni-
tion.
Spencer said he was moved emotion-
ally as he reflected on the moment back in
2006. He reminisced on that moment before
the Resolution was placed on the Consent
Agenda.
The first two African American Legis-
lators- Legislator the Hon. Harvey Burger
of the City of Newburgh, and Legislator the
Hon. Noel Spencer of the Town of Chester
co-sponsored Resolution 26 of 2006, with
Legislator the Hon. Jeff Berkman as co-
sponsor and seconded by Legislator Win-
stanley by recognizing Black History
officially for the first time in Orange
County, NY.
The historic occasion took place in the
Orange County Legislature chambers room
in Goshen, NY. On Thursday, February
2nd, 2006, Orange County Legislature
began the annual recognition of Black His-
tory month by voting unanimously.
In 2006, the Resolution was presented
as Consent item Resolution 26. This year
(2021), the Resolution was placed as the
third item on the agenda in its 25th year.

Assembly by U.S. Senate Majority Leader
Charles Schumer at Church of God of East

The truncated ceremony took place im-

test series since 2012 as they defeated
Bangladesh in a tense affair in Dhaka on
Sunday.

supporting New York State small businesses, non-
profits and small landlords as they reopen after the
COVID-19 outbreak and NYS on PAUSE.

50 or fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
(90% of all businesses), nonprofits and small resi-
dential landlords that have seen a loss of rental in-

County shopping mall identified
his alleged killer -- a 70-year-old
convicted bank robber from North

Esau Torres-Guzman, 19-
year-old, has been charged with

a handgun, and possession of a
weapon for an unlawful purpose
for his role in the December 25,
2020 shooting on Market and Esau Torres-Guzman
Carroll streets.
A 19-year-old man was struck by gunfire in the incident.

Teachers want COVID-19 vaccine
