GROWTH AND DECAY

1. The population of a certain country is known to increase at a rate proportional to the

number presently living in the country. If after two years the population has doubled,
and after three years the population is 20,000, estimate the number of people initially
living in the country?
2. A certain radioactive material is known to decay at a rate proportional to the amount
present. After an hour, it is observed that 10% of the material has decayed. Find the
half-life of the material.
NEWTON’S LAW OF COOLING
1. Lana stayed at Starbucks and ordered a cup of caramel macchiato. When the coffee
was served at around 8:15 AM, its temperature is 75°C. The temperature inside is
maintained at 18°C. At around 8:30 AM, the temperature of the coffee dropped by 15
degrees. What is the coffee’s temperature at exactly 8:40? If Lana wants to drink the
coffee when its temperature is 45°C, what time should this happen?
2. A bottle of Red Horse beer was served freezing cold at -4°C. After 10 minutes, its
temperature increased to 6°C. If the ambient temperature is 25°C, what is the
temperature of the beer after another 10 minutes?
MIXING
1. A tank initially contains 100 gallons of NaCl solution, where 50 lbs of salt is added.
Salt solution containing 1lb/gal goes into the tank at a rate of 2 gal/min, and the solution
thoroughly mixed, goes out at a rate of 1 gal/min.
a. Find the amount of pure salt in the tank after 100 minutes.
b. Find the amount of pure salt after 100 minutes if the solution is thoroughly
mixed and goes out a rate of 2 gal/min.
2. A tank initially contains 50 gallons of fresh water. Brine containing 2 lb/gal of salt,
flows into the tank at a rate of 2 gal/min and the mixture, kept uniform by stirring, runs
out at the same rate. How long will it take for the concentration of salt to increase from
40 to 80 lbs?
TRANSIENT CIRCUITS
1. R = 12 Ω, L = 4 H, E = 60 V
a. Find the time constant of the circuit.
b. Find the current at any time.
c. What is the value of the steady-state current?
d. Find VR and VL at t = 100 ms.
2. E = 10u(t) V, C = 1mF
a. Find the time constant.
b. Find the equation of current at any time.
c. Find the value of i, VR and VC at t = 250 ms.
d. Find the value of t when VR = VC.

ORTHOGONAL TRAJECTORIES
1. Find the orthogonal trajectory of the family of lines passing through the origin.
2. Find the orthogonal trajectory of the family of parabolas x = ky2.
