IMAGE 1. Plan of Panopticon

Describe the image(s) as thoroughly as possible. Relate the different aspects of the image(s) to the themes discussed in readings,
lectures and in your tutorials.

Your writing will be assessed on the following criteria which are based on the grade descriptors for in-class writing exercises: a.
grasp of concepts discussed in class; capacity to present a point of view and generate ideas; structure and argumentation;
mechanics, syntax and grammar.

Answer:

The drawing shows a building with a cylinder-like design. We can see many uniformly arranged and closely packed windows when
looking outside the building. When looking at the inner structure of the building, we can see there are many rooms at the outer
circle wall of the building which is a prison. From the photo, we can see that the inner part of the building is an open area that we
can see some pillars supporting it. At the centre of the building, there is a circle from the bird eye view of the architecture.

The topic stated that the architecture is a prison so every parts of architecture like windows, rooms are following a straight line and
restricted arrangement. Also, the closely packed rooms can help at putting enough prisoners. Also, the important part of this
architecture is about Panopticon, which is the surveillance of the prisoners. All rooms are face to the center of the architecture. The
centre circle of the architecture is a surveillance tower that the people inside can have a 360 degree view of the prison and keep
watch over the prisons easily.

The photo shows the tendency of disciplinary societies suppresses people with crime. Since the prisonsers knows that every action
they do is under monitoring. The Principle of this design of prison is central inspection. This lead to a further thinking question that
in the past, the prisoners at least know that every move is under surveillance. But back to nowadays lives, the appearance of digital
technology make surveillance not observable. Digital surveillance like mini CCTV, the trace of internet search history or government
surveillance on user preference on the android phone is invisible. The panopticon by Jeremy Benthan maybe even give more
respect to human right in some sense than the daily lives of people nowadays.

IMAGE SET 2. LEED CERTIFICATION & SAN FRANCISCO TRANSBAY TERMINAL

Describe the image(s) as thoroughly as possible. Relate the different aspects of the image(s) to the themes discussed in readings,
lectures and in your tutorials.

Your writing will be assessed on the following criteria which are based on the grade descriptors for in-class writing exercises: a.
grasp of concepts discussed in class; capacity to present a point of view and generate ideas; structure and argumentation;
mechanics, syntax and grammar.

Answers:

The LEED certification on a building is a symbol of quality and achievement in green building. From the photo, we can see that
there are several requirements such as innovation, indoor environmental quality, water efficiency.

From the photo, the San Francisco Transbay Terminal is a transportation complex. The bottom level of the terminal is heavy rail
and Light rail. These two rails will also release CO2 when they are in use. And there will be a natural ventilation with a Co2, NOx
and particle filters to ventilate the CO2 to the upper part of the terminal. In the upper part of the terminal, we can see many mature
trees which can absorb CO2 and produce oxygen through photosynthesis. As a result, the amount of green house gases will be
reduced. This satisfy the requirement on LEED of indoor Environmental Quality and Energy Production and Atmosphere which the
air quality inside the terminal is good because of ventilating pollutant out, and also the outside atmosphere of the terminal is good
as there are trees and filter absorbing pollutant gas.

Besides, we can see there is Hybrid Low Sulfur Buss which only produce 90gr. CO2/pers/mile and 0.75 gr. PM/mile also produce
less pollutants to environment. With the help of heavy rail and light rail which also produce 210 gr CO2 and 90 gr CO2 /per/mile
respectively which is relatively low pollutant emission comparing to bus and private cars. So it also satisfies the LEED certification
of Location and Transportation which provide green public transportation and vehicles

In water reduction, the terminal have rainwater collection to reduce water usage. The water collected will be filtered through water
plants and algae and remove particulates.

Also, the terminal has pumps and heat exchanger to reduce the energy for heating. There are also GeoThermal system to use
ground water as source of cooling to reduce the requirement for mechanical cooling. As a result, the waste heat producing from the
terminal and also the heat needed for some function of the terminal can also be solved in a sustainable way and this also satisfy
the requirement of Energy and Atmosphere in LEED.

In the open space of the terminal, we can see that there are 70 mature trees according to the photo, and also grass and many
young trees which provide sufficient green open space and satisfy the requirement of sustainable sites of LEED certificate.

In a nutshell, the San Francisco Transbay Terminal design reduces much harm to the environment and also give a sustainable way
to make the terminal work. Also it earns many points of the LEED certificates from the analysis of its design proving that it is a
design that very suitable for environment development.

IMAGE SET 3. COCATOO FLYING & FLIGHT OF GULLS

Describe the image(s) as thoroughly as possible. Relate the different aspects of the image(s) to the themes discussed in readings,
lectures and in your tutorials.

Your writing will be assessed on the following criteria which are based on the grade descriptors for in-class writing exercises: a.
grasp of concepts discussed in class; capacity to present a point of view and generate ideas; structure and argumentation;

Answers:

In the Animal Locomotion, Plate 762, it shows 12 frames of gull in flight. Also the Flight of Gulls (1882) is taking a continuous shots
on flying Gulls. Both sets of photos is describing the flying motion of a bird.

In the first set of photo, there are some photos that is very similar. For example, there are 4 photos that the bird wings is opened
and pointing to the upside. And there are 3 photos that the bird wings is opened and pointed to the downside. Also there are 3
photos showing the bird is closing the wings. However, when we look at the photos with order, it shows the complete motion of a
flying cockatoo moving its wings. Like a gif photo that showing a cycle of how a cockatoo flies.

This kind of photo give a feeling of more active and vivid image of the cockatoo as when it is like a low-framed film when looking at
the photos one by one. Also, even some pictures are similar, the minor difference such as the difference in the degree of wings
make the photo more true to life and people can better imagine the flying cockatoo.

In the Flight of Gulls (1882), it puts the continuous shot of Gulls in the same photo. This give a more complete picture of the
movement of Gulls as we can see the gull moving forward with slightly different posture. This idea of chronophotography. This
gives more information of the behavior of object. It is because the shots provide precise motion of the gull in particular time and
help studying the movement and have a record of entire sequence of movement.
