.50 Cal Trainer, Advanced

Saab’s .50 Cal Trainer, advanced – all versions and platforms – is the perfect choice for all aspects of weapons training. Because the .50 caliber machine gun is not a high precision weapon, hit observation and fire correction are of crucial importance in maximizing the use of this weapon. The realism and experience provided by the .50 Cal Trainer, including fire correction, gives gunners confidence in their performance. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their weapons, using correct and real weapon procedures, give soldiers better survivability in actual combat situations.

The laser simulator provides realistic fire simulation capabilities, even taking range into account. The system calculates ballistic projectile paths and provides gunners with this information through tracer-and burst feedback. The laser system is excellent for training all aspects of gunnery performance, from basic gunnery to advanced tactical scenarios in a CTC.

Sophisticated gunner feedback

The .50 Cal Trainer, Advanced is equipped with a high fidelity optical feedback system. The gunner’s view is augmented with trace-and-burst visualization. In addition, the trainer is equipped with a display for visual user feedback and a speaker for verbal audio information and weapons sounds. Accurate firing simulation results are immediately fed back and visually presented to the gunner in the tracer-and-burst eyepiece unit. The advantage of this system is that it gives gunners normal capabilities in changing aiming points to adjust fire. The .50 Cal Trainer, Advanced calculates the true ballistic trajectory of each type of .50 caliber ammunition,

taking into account the gunner’s azimuth lead angle, aim and gun barrel super elevation. The simulations determine the hit-or-miss point with excellent precision. Each target receives its individual actual hitor- miss distance position and determines the effect of the hit. All event data are stored in a memory for after action review evaluation purposes. As a complement to training, without pyrotechnics or using blank firing ammunition, a light firing signature is used. Unrealistic “silent war” is avoided by generating realistic, firing signature audio effects.

Installation

The system is rapidly fitted to the host weapon and its rugged design keeps it operational even under the most difficult environmental conditions.

• Installation and alignment takes less than five minutes.

• Ammo Box Replica includes most units and

functionality, and is easily fitted on a soft mount.

• Simulator system handling is

identical to real-weapon system handling and the simulator is transparent to users.

Instructor tools

Instructors play an essential role in all training. The tools give them the capabilities to provide objective and timely feedback, both on the individual and collective levels. Instructors can plan, prepare, execute and evaluate gunnery training. Cost efficiency, performance improvement and a positive learning curve are among the results. Each gunner is individually evaluated and given positive training feedback relevant to the specified training objective. Feedback can be given both in real-time and as an After Action Review (AAR). The software takes into account event information such as engagement times, aiming coordinates, aiming procedures, hit information, etc., and presents the data as statistical reports, qualification results etc. The feedback can be viewed both on printouts and as on-screen presentations. The on-screen presentation can be interactive and sequences can be replayed. With the real-time feature, a larger number of gunners can be monitored and instructed simultaneously by one instructor.
