When we began this project, looking into the life of Corbusier and the reasoning behind his essay

‘5 points toward a new architecture’ there were

several ideas that resonated with us...
one specifically was Corbusier’s idea, after World War I, of a backlash to all the destruction and killing, taking strong social consideration on
making life better...

In tandem with this idea, he was also influenced by the problems of...
industrial cities, their lack of moral landscape, overcrowding, and dirtiness...

I think this is when he declared that ‘by law, all buildings should be painted white...’

With the essay and its 5 Points Corbusier envisioned creating not only harmony within the space but also harmony...
with nature; his idea that the roof garden simply replaces the ground the building was constructed upon further justifies this point...
and this fusion of industry and nature is best resulted in the Villa Savoye; demonstrating each of the 5 Points as well as providing a place to
reflect back upon nature and break free from the hustle and bustle of industry...

This leads us the our exhibition, exemplifying the 5 Points in a persuasive manner that is both enlightening and practical...

design objective

To reflect Le Corbusier’s entirely new way of living

revolving around practicality, purpose, and function-
ality; breaking free from the crowded commotion of
industriousness and reflecting back upon nature.

The brandmark lends itself to this idea of breaking free and fusion with the convergence of the bounding boxes and is also subtly emphasized
through the shift in tone from dark to light....

Gotham was chosen as our overall typeface due to its reductive and geometric characteristics; being a very open typeface also reflects back upon
the idea of escaping from the clutter and crowdedness of industry...

Our color palette that signifies each of the 5 Points is derived from Corbusier’s paintings which have direct relation to his architectural reason...
As he worked with a grid structure and the Golden Rule, creating harmonic proportions in both his paintings and architectural designs.

To cohesively tie imagery to each of the points, they are rendered in a duotone style with each of their respective colors.

is a plan view of the overall layout, the large images serve the larger purpose of bringing all the points together while each individual point serves
to express its practicality and purpose, to break this down we first look at the...
introduction featuring the brandmark and a brief statement...
introducing what is about to be seen within the gallery space stressing the ideal of practicality, functionality, and purpose with the goal of
reflecting back upon nature...
Immediately evoking the viewer with this concept is a large scale composition demonstrating this fusion...
and harmony with industry and nature...
the foundation of these ideals is then expressed through this holistic approach, fusing 3 of the 5 points together as one is directly related to one
another and can be experienced in whichever order necessary....
One of the 3 is the free design of the facade...
emphasizing that the lack of load-bearing walls in Corbusier’s vision allows for free design of the floor plan, making way for the free utilization
and extension of space...
The supports make this idea possible as their sole function is to act as the
skeleton of the building, making way for
the free design of the space
in precise, mathematical order, spawning from this is...
is Corbusier’s 3rd point, the free designing of the ground plan...
emphasizing that the interior walls have no direct relation to the exterior...
and can be put wherever one pleases...the interactivity within this section further emphasizes the point of freedom within the floor plan...

corresponding with the screens is an

iPad interface that allows the viewer to control and create their very own floor plan by sizing, placing, and shaping their own walls within the
gridded structure of the supports...
Corbusier’s 4th point emphasizes the use of horizontal windows from a more practical stance
as well as how they can bring more natural light into the structure, and in a more abstract way frame the horizon landscape outside the home...
which lends itself to the following composition; the clean stark white aesthetic...
contrasting, and framing the outlying landscape...

Directly related to this idea is the 2nd of Corbusier’s 5 points...

The roof garden, giving the home a luxurious escape...
from the built-up cluttered city....that is further exemplified through the imagery
speaking to the fusions of nature and industry....
Another element of this space is also interactive, allowing the user to freely design their very own roof garden, once again...
utilizing the iPad to control the space and
turn these illuminated boxes into the vibrant, relaxing garden of their choosing...
from a grander standpoint we hope to have portrayed the ‘middle ground’ between the dirt of industry and the revitalization of nature through
the practical breakdown of Corbusier’s argument reflecting upon freedom and the overall improvement of living.
